Having your first child can be a daunting time, causing you to ask yourself ‘Am I doing this right?’ multiple times a day. And with the constant stream of parenting tips from all and sundry, it can be hard to know who and what to listen to. ASDA Little Angels would like to know what the one piece of baby advice someone gave you was that really cut through the noise and made a difference.

Here’s what ASDA Little Angels has to say: "We all know you can get great advice online from the likes of Mumsnet or our own Baby & Toddler Club; but sometimes that one thing that makes your life easier can come from the most unexpected source. We’d love to hear yours!"

Did someone show you a handy trick to make nappy changes hassle-free or tell you the must have essentials for your nappy bag? Maybe you were given golden advice on how to still feel like yourself whilst caring for baby? Or perhaps you were told tips on how to get your baby to sleep through the night?

Whether you were enlightened by the numerous uses for wet wipes or told a never-fail trick to soothe your baby, please share it below and you will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

orionleah2012 · 06/11/2017 17:55

Go with what best for your baby, don't always stick to rigid feeding plan go with what your baby wants, my midwife advice help my growing baby and help me relax.. too

HowsAnnie25 · 06/11/2017 18:04

Best advice was from the health visitor - accept offers of help such as washing up etc when you have visitors cooing over baby!

grannybiker · 06/11/2017 18:31

I wish I'd know the one about sliding vests downwards, would have saved all that trying to get poo out of tiny ears :O !

My top tip is "All this will pass," so cherish those precious moments too

twinklenic · 06/11/2017 19:17

Dont join in with the Mum comparisons, all babies are different and learn things at different rates , do feel upset if someones baby smiles first , or they crawl or walk first. Ive had 3 and every single one was different ....enjoy them being babies

jandoc · 06/11/2017 20:06

try to enjoy every day because they will soon be grown up and leaving home

43percentburnt · 06/11/2017 21:05

For the first year the priority is that everyone gets some sleep. If that means cosleeping or bedsharing just do it. Sleep keeps everyone sane!

marymanc · 06/11/2017 21:07

Definitely: sleep when they sleep.

Theimpossiblegirl · 06/11/2017 22:46

Be kind to yourself- nobody is perfect and Instagram is not real.

Wet wipes in every pocket!

rhinosuze · 07/11/2017 07:23

Definitely baby vests that go from the top down, made everything easier!!!

Can't remember exact words, but it was something like:

'cleaning the house whilst the children are growing, is like brushing the path whilst it's still snowing'.

Whilst the intentions were not, I'm sure, that I should never clean the house, it did remind me that it was usually fine to leave the cleaning until a better time, for example, when the children were in bed etc.

Obviously, as the children get older, it is equally fine to introduce them to elements of cleaning and get them to help too, but not at times that would be better used in enjoying life with them, such as building a snowman with all that snow that has built up on your path!

Baby number 1 - huge nappy bag with EVERYTHING in it. Baby number 5 small shoulder bag with essentials - nappy, nappy bag with very small pack of wipes and tiny pot of creme - if only I knew all of this with baby number 1!!!

CopperKettle11 · 07/11/2017 10:08

Do not compare your baby and their developments to other babies. I was once told, that they will all be walking, talking and potty trained by the time they go to school - they all develop at their own pace.

KavvLar · 07/11/2017 10:30

If you have a baby and a toddler then take the baby out of the car first, then the toddler. Otherwise merry hell breaks loose as the toddler runs for it. Baby can't run!

colleenw · 07/11/2017 10:58

That every baby is different and never compare you and your baby with everyone elses. They develop at different speeds.

Helsbells68 · 07/11/2017 12:30

My DD was a screamer due to severe reflux issues, we only realised this recently as the interned did not exist back then, and doctors and midwives did not care so long as she was putting on weight. One time we were out in our local supermarket and people were looking at us as if we were torturing her, except for one lady who approached us and told us to ignore the stares as she had had a screaming baby and understood sometimes there is nothing you can do about it.

UpOnDown · 07/11/2017 13:12

every baby is individual, what works with one may not work with all of them.

Faalaa · 07/11/2017 14:20

Trust your instinct - everyone has conflicting advice about everything, deep down you’ll know what is best for your baby.

AVT5 · 07/11/2017 14:39

with a boy place a wipe over his parts to stop him weeing on you between changing his nappy!

pixelwife · 07/11/2017 17:36

You don't need half the stuff you buy! With my second child I bought barely anything as after my son was born we had unused baby gadgets, lots of clothes with tags still on etc. I was also much more relaxed with my second child and trusted my judgement a lot more so my best advice would be to relax and enjoy every second - it goes so quickly!

Minnibix · 07/11/2017 18:32

My health visitor was brilliant, she helped me a lot, her mantra was

  1. When baby sleeps you sleep
  2. Don't worry too much about the housework, that can wait, baby can't
  3. You need someone to make you feel like a woman
PussCatTheGoldfish · 07/11/2017 18:55

Enjoy it as they grow up so fast!

Too true!

MoodyOne · 07/11/2017 18:56

Sunlight is the best thing to remove baby poo ! All my white baby grows in the conservatory all cane up lovely every time!

Every baby is unique and trust your instincts

lotte321 · 07/11/2017 19:11

DO NOT go out and buy everything that people say you need. If I'd've taken more notice of my mum, I wouldn't have bought half of the stuff that I did. It never got used and is still in my loft. Babies and toddlers are expensive enough as it is, without wasting money on unnecessary items.
