The team at Aunt Bessie's would love to know all about your Sunday Roast Rituals - what makes a roast dinner go down well in your house? What's the key tip, trick, ingredient or essential item which makes that meal particularly successful? Does your family always sit down at the table? Is Sunday the one day you always insist on everyone being home to eat? And what do you dish up for vegetarians or anyone with specific dietary needs? Do you have roast potatoes even when it's not a Sunday?

Aunt Bessie's say "Aunt Bessie’s recognises how difficult it is these days to get the family together - that’s why mealtimes, and particularly the Sunday Roast, are so important. We’re proud to announce that our Homestyle roast potatoes are Mumsnet Rated*, following testing by members of the site. So whether you whip them out for the Sunday Roast or use them to spice up a meal during the week, give Aunt Bessie’s roasties a try today and see how long you can keep the kids at the table!"

Add your ritual or tip for a great Sunday Roast below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one person will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck

The whole family affair always involves Granny loudly declaring how much she "likes stuffing." Teens are mortified!

NeverTwerkNaked · 19/10/2017 16:37

We always make plenty so that there are leftovers. Definitely all sat round the table. Two of our four children have allergies so catering for everyone is tricky but they all enjoy a roast dinner. There always have to be roast parsnips and stuffing and gravy for it to feel like a proper roast dinner.
I haven’t found a good egg and dairy free Yorkshire pudding recipe yet sadly

My top tip has to be this: After par boiling the potatoes, drain the water and then pop the lid on the saucepan and give them a shake. It roughens the edges, so that when they roast, they are nice and ceispy!

I love having the family sitting round the table on Sundays for a roast - as often as possible. Even DGS loves an Aunt Bessie's yorkie pud (or 2) with some thick gravy. I roast parsnips and carrots with the potatoes, just drizzling them with olive oil and seasoning.
On the rare occasions there's a roast potato or 2 ;left over, I cut them up for my dogs and give them a treat with their supper! After all, they're family too!

We have a home cooked roast at my parents house every Sunday, all 18 of us!

shewhomustbeEbayed · 19/10/2017 19:08

My family like my roast chicken, roast potatoes, white wine gravy, tinned carrots and petit pois and bought cauliflower cheese, not every Sunday, about once every 2 months.
I make a main course soup the next day from leftover gravy, chicken and veg and fry up the roasties with egg and bacon for breakfast.

Marg2k8 · 19/10/2017 19:31

My tip is to save leftover potato and cabbage to make bubble and squeak the next day.

Chottie · 19/10/2017 20:14

Roast dinners have to have Yorkshire puddings :) We even have them with our Christmas dinner. Yorkshire puddings need to be small and crispy. We also like roasted tomatoes stuffed with toasted breadcrumbs, onion, garlic and parsley.

CheeseEMouse · 19/10/2017 20:34

Use the leftover chicken to make a chicken, leek and potato pie. And always extra yorkshires!

buckley1983 · 19/10/2017 21:00

Roast chicken is the favoured roast in our house - teamed with carrots, sprouts, roast potatoes & roast parnsips &, of course, bread sauce - yummy!
Top tip - add crushed garlic cloves & fresh rosemary to the roast potatoes while roasting - delicious!

hibbertheather · 19/10/2017 21:29

My only tip would be not to stress too much about the outcome - everyone always ends up enjoying it regardless!

honeyandginger48 · 19/10/2017 21:56

A gallon of homemade onion and madeira gravy and more roast potatoes than any family could possibly eat are all essential. We like the Jamie Oliver method of making roast potatoes where you crush them half way through roasting to make them extra crispy.

BertismyDad · 19/10/2017 22:06

Always have a roast on a Sunday, mostly at lunchtime, occasionally in the evening if we're busy at lunchtime. We always have Yorkshire puddings no matter what meat we're having. Roast potatoes and parsnips every Sunday and they have to be crispy - very important!!

angell74 · 19/10/2017 22:53

Always have leftovers for bubble and squeak!

GetKnitted · 19/10/2017 23:11

My Sunday roast ritual is to make gravy that you can't actually pour out of the gravy boat by getting too over enthusiastic with how much flour is needed! :) Last time's could almost have been carved!! Halloween Blush

KittyKat88 · 19/10/2017 23:22

Hubby does fantastic roasties, and I'm great at putting the Aunt Bessies Yorkshire puds in the oven! Wink Grin

Cailin7 · 20/10/2017 00:00

Like to cook a joint larger than needed so there are lots of cold cuts for lunch. And you can never have too many roast potatoes or yorkshire's.

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/10/2017 00:23

My DP works most weekends so when he is home for dinner I love cooking a proper roast.

I put the radio on and DS(10) and I cook and dance and have weird and wonderful conversations. I put various veggies and unveiled garlic cloves into the roasting tin which makes for flavorful gravy and "dipped piece", bread dipped in the juices as the meat is basted. It reminds me of cooking roasts with my granny when I was wee. We sit at the table to eat and DS would happily just have the Yorkshire puddings and gravy if he was allowed.

For us, Sunday roast is not just about the eating, it is the love and fun, chat and nostalgia that goes into preparing it as well.Smile

StillCantDecideOnaUsername · 20/10/2017 00:45

No roast is complete in our house without a mountain of Yorkshire puddings. DH does all the cooking and has his own recipe down to a t. His yorkshires are the best I've ever had- ginormous and fluffy and best eaten with lashings of gravy! Ahhhhh I'm craving Yorkshire puds now!

tubbyj · 20/10/2017 00:51

Got to be the gravy the essential material for a roast dinner

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 20/10/2017 00:56

Nothing nicer than sitting down with our Sunday roast after 2 lots of football matches.

We always have chicken and at least 4 roast potatoes each.

DS2 always offers to take the plates in to the kitchen so he can get his little paws on the leftover chicken to pick bits of the skin off.

trinitybleu · 20/10/2017 06:58

Extra roast potatoes so I can have some cold for my pack up the next day, with salt and vinegar on.

Otherwise, go to the farm shop for their roast dinner and avoid the washing up!

NerrSnerr · 20/10/2017 09:22

We have stuffing balls with everything, whatever the roast. We all love them.

TheOtherNNB · 20/10/2017 09:33

Condiments are key!
It doesn’t feel like a proper roast if there isn’t decent horseradish/homemade apple sauce/mint sauce.
I also like a nice onion sauce to jazz it up a bit.
And of course, more roast potatoes the merrier. You can never do too many roast potatoes

manchesteruntied · 20/10/2017 10:48

...anyone else get really hungry reading this?? (...is being pg a good enough excuse to make a roast at 11am on a Friday lol)
