The team at Aunt Bessie's would love to know all about your Sunday Roast Rituals - what makes a roast dinner go down well in your house? What's the key tip, trick, ingredient or essential item which makes that meal particularly successful? Does your family always sit down at the table? Is Sunday the one day you always insist on everyone being home to eat? And what do you dish up for vegetarians or anyone with specific dietary needs? Do you have roast potatoes even when it's not a Sunday?

Aunt Bessie's say "Aunt Bessie’s recognises how difficult it is these days to get the family together - that’s why mealtimes, and particularly the Sunday Roast, are so important. We’re proud to announce that our Homestyle roast potatoes are Mumsnet Rated*, following testing by members of the site. So whether you whip them out for the Sunday Roast or use them to spice up a meal during the week, give Aunt Bessie’s roasties a try today and see how long you can keep the kids at the table!"

Add your ritual or tip for a great Sunday Roast below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one person will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck

Do it in the slow cooker, it frees up time and makes the meat so tender and tasty!

purplepandas · 21/10/2017 16:10

Always make more roasties and have plenty of gravy. Mint sauce even if not lamb ( am veggie personally).

3teens2cats · 21/10/2017 19:14

Always sit down at the table to eat together for Sunday roast. Restbof the week its unrealistic with sports activities and dh often works late but Sunday evening everyone is home. In the summer Sunday roasts turn into sunday bbqs!

yoeydavis · 21/10/2017 19:19

i always make far to much for bubble and squeak the next day. it's even better than the roast dinner.

BeeMyBaby · 21/10/2017 19:24

Sundays are the only day we usually have red meat (including chicken leg/thighs) so always have them with roast potatoes and veg, I make myself a vegetarian burger which goes well with all the other veg anyway.

rachelmi · 21/10/2017 21:30

Lots of roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. More gravy than necessary and lots of healthy veggies.

AngelwingsPetlamb · 21/10/2017 22:05

If you want to make really good Yorkshire puddings, make your batter about an hour before you need it then pop it in the fridge to chill. When you are ready to cook them, put meat fat from the roast in your Yorkshire dish, plenty of oil not just a thin coating. Pop the dish in the oven on the top shelf on a high heat until the oil is smoking hot. Pour the batter in, it will spit a little but don't worry. Then pop the tray back in the oven. You will get great Yorkshires to go with your roast, and make extra because everyone will love them.

MissJadeA · 21/10/2017 22:05

Always cook way more than what you need! Bubble & squeak the next day with the leftovers is one of our favourites! Also, when making the gravy from the meat juices, make more than you'll need so you can freeze it!

Sunday roast rarely happens on a Sunday as that's ice hockey day and it's too much faff. But I'm not against them being on any other day. Rules in this house are as follows. Meat, roast potatoes, gravy, at least 2 veg. Yorkshire puddings are only to be served with beef. Mint sauce only with lamb. Cauliflower cheese and mash potato has no place on a roast dinner plate. Extra gravy must be made in order to have ontop of a slice of buttered white bread once everything else has been eaten.

lynsmagoo · 21/10/2017 23:38

I love a good Sunday roast. My top tip is to leave the beef out of the fridge half an hour before cooking to bring it to room temperature for a better taste. Baste the beef halfway through cooking and if the veg look dry, add a splash of water to the tray to stop them from burning!

MakeTeaNotWar · 22/10/2017 08:40

Over estimate the number of roast potatoes required - there won't be an left. I often add a drizzle of truffle oil to the roasties for a rich indulgent taste. Or use Nigella's receipe for salt and vinegar roasties - divine.

defineme · 22/10/2017 09:06

Sitting down together is key and must haves are the roast potatoes, but I love the extras too like cauliflower cheese.

kkhimji · 22/10/2017 09:34

Make extra for lunch the next day :) Great for a hangover

lucyrobinson · 22/10/2017 12:52

Our roast dinner ritual sounds are that every roast has to have Yorkshire puddings and sausages. I also like to make a homemade cauliflower and broccoli cheese. Also the roast potatoes have to be crispy.

mimble21 · 22/10/2017 13:02

Buy the best meat you can afford, it really makes all the difference.
Let the meat come up to room temperature before roasting (30 minutes).

vickyors · 22/10/2017 13:22

I cook my potatoes around the chicken. And I go with the best quality chicken we can afford so you get lovely juice. I put onions into the fish too. They caramelise and make the potatoes yummy.
Bacon on the chicken at first.
Then let the chicken rest for 30 mins at the end.. mmmm

ArbitraryName · 22/10/2017 13:38

It isn’t the chilling that makes Yorkshire puddings rise loads. It’s the resting. In fact, room temperature batter rises more than cold batter (but is less likely to form a cup shape).

See Serious Eats link for tests of various theories about making Yorkshire puddings.

Ijustbluemyself · 22/10/2017 13:51

I do a roast every week but it's always different so I can surprise the family! In the last few weeks we've had a roast in a Yorkshire pudding wrap, gammon and cauliflower cheese and slow cooked lamb shoulder. Always roast potatoes thouhg

Ren1974 · 22/10/2017 18:28

My daughter is not great at eating veg so she has sweet potato mash, which in itself is healthier than white potato mash, and we mash in broccoli and a little cabbage.

This worked for my son too, until a few years ago when his taste changed and he now eats the broccoli without it being hidden :)

Helsbells68 · 22/10/2017 19:05

We have a low-carb diet due to diabetes so no potatoes or yorkies but there is always plenty of meat and vegetables to go around. We like to keep it simple with everyone sitting at the dinner table and no phones

Amber0685 · 22/10/2017 20:01

Seal off the potatoes in hot duck fat before roasting

Lisapaige24 · 22/10/2017 20:43

Lots of Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and absolutely make the gravy from the meat juices , gravy granules just aren’t the same

Firsttimemum15 · 22/10/2017 21:47

A roast is our newish family tradition. We will go for a walk or a day out or have a lazy dinner then a homemade roast as a family or with friends. Love it. Best tip do extra meat/quorn and stuffing and there is enough left for a lovely butty the next day. Delish. X

Holliewantstobehot · 22/10/2017 23:40

Lots of thick gravy. Without it the roast is ruined. Crunchy roast potatoes and I always do roast butternut and onion. We usually have a roast in the week rather than Sunday. DS is not very keen on roast but will eat it if there's stuffing so we have stuffing with everything. I insist on having the right sauce for the meat too, so mint jelly, apple sauce, horseradish etc.

Rigbyroo · 23/10/2017 09:06

Music while I crack on! Loads of thick gravy.
