For many, Autumn often symbolises a time to be with family, wrapping up, staying indoors with a good movie and indulging in our favourite comfort foods. The healthy living habits from summer can often take a backseat and, as a result, these cooler months can often put our health goals and weight loss journeys on pause. With that being said, Weight Watchers want you to share any funny autumn and winter healthy living pitfalls or triumphs you have gone through.

Zoe Griffiths, Head of Programme and Public Health at Weight Watchers, adds: “For many, the shift in season will bring with it a change in outlook. It’s a time when we start to notice that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is becoming be more difficult. In fact, working with psychologist Professor Geoff Beattie, we have identified that 18th September is the date when the seasonal shift begins to impact Brits’ lives. But just because the seasons have changed, doesn’t mean your outlook has to too. You are very much still in control of your own healthy lifestyle!”

"Weight Watchers has a plan to help avoid those pesky pitfalls all autumn long! Introducing… The Weight Watchers Guide to Owning Autumn. The Guide will be updated each week throughout the season to help counteract the seasonal shift and make it easier for people to take control of their weight loss journey and overcome the lifestyle challenges posed during the cooler season."

Zoe continues: “At Weight Watchers, we believe that you can say ‘yes’ to the things that you love and still enjoy a healthy lifestyle – any time of the year! That’s why with food, activity and wellbeing deeply engrained in our philosophy, we have designed the new Guide to Owning Autumn, which provides motivation, support and tips and tricks, so that you can enjoy the cooler seasons while showing autumn who is boss!”

Have you ever convinced yourself that colder weather calls for an extra glass of wine? Perhaps you’ve managed to fool everyone that you went to the gym by wandering around all day in your gym clothes, when actually they’re just so comfy? Or maybe you successfully managed to dodge all the chocolate that your kids collected at Halloween?

Whatever your healthy living pitfall or triumph, post them on the thread below. All MNers who comment will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky person will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Avoiding chocolate, alcohol and any other comfort food. It's hard.

EasterRobin · 28/09/2017 22:44

I find it so much harder to leave my cosy warm home to exercise in the cold dark evenings. The best way for me to do it is to go to the gym or an exercise class on the way home from work. That way I never get the chance to get overly settled at home.

gemmie797 · 28/09/2017 22:45

I find Autumn hard to stay motivated to eat healthily as I feel like hibernating, but I do make lots of fresh food to freeze for winter evenings

StickChildNumberTwo · 28/09/2017 22:59

Tesco having chocolate oranges on buy one get two free recently was definitely a pitfall....

catgirl2 · 29/09/2017 07:16

Porridge and soup (not together!). Warming and comforting but healthy too. Excersise wise has to be Pilates, preferably in a nice warm studio :-)

2014newme · 29/09/2017 08:16

Plan ahead what you're having
Vegetable soups are great, we like butternut squash flavour.
Dahl
I try to avoid potatoes and cheese!

Duckiesprettycrazy · 29/09/2017 09:08

Porridge and fruit for breakfast everyday, staying motivated for that Christmas party dress!

Auntiedahlia · 29/09/2017 09:41

Winter stews are gorgeous. So much less faff to chuck a load of veg in the slow cooker and forget about it for the day.

maursieq · 29/09/2017 12:35

Love autumn and winter to go out running as finally not over heating and looking like my head is going to explode

slbhill42 · 29/09/2017 12:52

I've been doing really well on the healthy front. But today's Macmillan Cancer Care's biggest coffee morning. I have baked enough for an army and there are only a dozen of us in the office to eat it all...

LoudestRoar · 29/09/2017 12:58

Autumn is the time I really appreciate my slow cooker. Love chucking a stew in it first thing, and it's done by evening. I put pearl barley in to make it go further

TarquinGyrfalcon · 29/09/2017 18:16

I'm not a salad fan so I tend to eat a lot more veg in the winter.

LJH79 · 30/09/2017 06:31

It's salad for summer and casserole and soups for Autumn and Winter. My brain is so conditioned in this way. Bit of stodgy comfort food is almost definitely needed!

ailsasheldon · 30/09/2017 12:05

Lots of long muddy walks to pubs and hot chocolate for us!

Autumn and winter definitely calls for fluffy jumpers, big boots, cinder toffee, bonfires and yes, lots of mulled wine.

Moomin7979 · 30/09/2017 17:00

I try to move around more to stay warm in the colder weather rather than eat more, but we all need extra fuel. A hot drink can also help, then see if you are actually hungry after all.

BlueIsntMyColour · 30/09/2017 21:25

I always crave comfort food in the winter so on Sundays I always make a huge pan of delicious thick vegetable soup and freeze it in small portions. It's so easy to defrost when I get in from work and stops me reaching for the usual stodgy comfort food.

CoffeenoTea · 30/09/2017 22:50

I look forward to game pie and stew.

ScissorBow · 30/09/2017 22:59

I have a habit of catching a virus this time of year and the weight drops off. I do not recommend it as a weight loss idea but that stubborn half stone stays off till Christmas.

WonderLime · 01/10/2017 11:07

The problem with winter is the introduction of all those lovely warming foods and drinks, like crumbles and strudels, and buttered rum.

I used to be really disciplined with exercise though as it was a way to warm up when the weather was cold - however I know have a 10 week DC so I suspect it will be snuggles in blankets with hot milk and hot chocolate in the midst of winter this year.

rachaelsit · 01/10/2017 17:32

We have sworn to no takeaways for September and it has now made us realise we had to many and didn't really even enjoy them to justify the silly cost let alone how fattening there are. Our habits will change to once per month now

I love lots of healthy broths and soups in winter ....my winter body always seems to end up in better shape than my summer body I find with going out less in the colder months, I drink less alcohol which affects my waistline in a positive way :-)

Bsummers · 03/10/2017 00:03

Winter is so hard for losing weight, my mum always says I eat like I'm getting ready to hibernate this time of year lol!

I try and calorie count though, but I treat myself. Hot chocolate is a must! Just got to cut down on the cheese so I can fit it in.

I still manage to slip up though (especially with all the halloween and christmas chocolate!), I'm better at healthy eating during summer.

hibbertheather · 03/10/2017 00:08

I work in a Christmas warehouse every winter doing picking and packing so I'm one of the very few people I know who loses weight during winter and puts it on in summer 😂
