It’s never too early to start thinking about the kids starting or heading back to school. There’s so much to buy that it’s hard to remember everything or even know how much of each thing you need - are 5 shirts enough/too much? Where should I shop? What should I buy? Are all common questions our MNers have.

Here’s what George at ASDA has to say: “Our schoolwear and footwear are such brilliant quality, we’re proud to offer a no-quibble 100 day satisfaction guarantee. This means that if you’re not happy with an item you’ve brought with 100 days, we’ll give you a full refund. So you can shop with complete confidence.”

George at ASDA would like you to go to their website here and pick out your favourite back to school items, whether that’s uniform, shoes, lunchboxes, or stationary and come back and share them (ideally with a link to make it easy on anyone who wants to check them out). It would be great if you could also share your back to school tips and tricks with your fellow MNers, especially those who may have DC going to school for the first time this year!

So how many shirts do you buy? Don’t forget about the PE kit! What are the most comfy school shoes for your DC? Have you found an amazing lunchbox with lots of handy compartments? Do you label EVERYTHING? How do you get your kids in the mindset for going back to school? Whatever your favourite back to school items and tricks, please share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 George at ASDA voucher.

Thanks and good luck

The 5 packs of short sleeved shirts are brilliant value. Label everything and personalise lunchboxes etc with stickers - it's amazing how easily they can get mixed up.

Have ordered this. My daughter is 8 and she will LOVE it. Also ordered lots of socks, pants, four pairs of PE shorts, PE pumps..... the list goes on! Always use Asda for school uniform, good quality, washes brilliantly and is very well priced.

My number one tip, with three children in school, is label, label, label!

Oh and frozen yoghurt tubes! Grin

Difference in boys and girls uniform at our school makes my blood boil. Girls have to wear specialised blouses and skirt, only available from 1 shop, which cost a fortune, and hence we make do with 1 skirt and 2 blouses, whereas boys can wear gery trousers and white shirts, which places like Asda sell very cheaply - sexist!

PinglePongle · 03/08/2017 14:11

Love love love this gingham dress

direct.asda.com/george/school/dresses/girls-school-gingham-dress-light-blue/GEM526554,default,pd.html

It's so cute, reminds me of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz!!

MillyVanilli222 · 03/08/2017 15:31

The two in one pinafore dress would be perfect for her new school year!

Sarahmariefoster · 03/08/2017 16:50

Money nowadays is so meager that simple things like bread and cheese is over a pound so school uniform is hard for me to buy for my little un

Sarahmariefoster · 03/08/2017 16:51

I know yeah boysis alot cheaper than the girls section

My girl loves the skorts for pe - she loves that she can still be a bit girly during her pe lessons!

katieskatie82 · 03/08/2017 19:13

I LOVE THE DRAWSTRING BAGS YOU DO. GREAT FOR PACKED LUNCHES AND SANDWICHES X

clarabella12 · 03/08/2017 20:39

I love the 5 packs of t shirts, it's a shame the girls don't have them with the frilled collar though. we have three school age kids so tend to start buying when the term ends, 5 t shirts each, 2 shirts, 4 pairs of trousers/pinafores, gym shorts, gym shoes, school shoes, new jackets, bags, pencil cases, pencils etc. we used to buy jumpers but kids never kept them on so this year keeping it to the basics.

BubbleBed · 03/08/2017 21:00

I will say as a kudos to Asda - I've not got to buy any school trousers this year. They have lasted a year, and will last longer yet. So well worth the money.

Alexandra87 · 03/08/2017 21:48

Asda have some fantastic lunch bags in at the minute. I don't know how to do the link but my ds picked one with a skull on the front that comes with a water bottle. I was glad I thought he would have picked the lego batman one but I was a bit worried he would go off a character one when it was out of fashion and this one will last

freedomofspeech · 03/08/2017 23:07

Definitely labelling everything and not getting anything too expensive, as it will always be the thing that gets lost!
Fave thing here (Peppa tumbler):

VickyRsuperstar · 04/08/2017 00:44

I usually get most of the school uniform from ASDA for my primary school kids as it's really good quality and lasts well. Secondary school insists on specialist uniform shops which are ridiculously expensive so now I appreciate just how good the ASDA prices are on my budget!

The rucksacks look good - I know one of mine will love the My Little Pony rucksack direct.asda.com/george/kids/accessories/my-little-pony-rucksack/GEM564540,default,pd.html

I love the boys trousers having different fits as my youngest son is so thin that he needs the skinny fit and adjustable waist without a doubt. Other brands have drowned him and fallen down!

ASDA is also one of the few places that stocks Navy pinafore dresses as I've found them hard to track down sometimes! direct.asda.com/george/school/pinafores-dresses/girls-school-drop-waist-pinafore-navy/GEM462940,default,pd.html

I will be buying our uniform online this week!

direct.asda.com/george/kids/accessories/floral-print-rucksack/GEM574758,default,pd.html this back pack is lovely. My back to school tip is prepare in advance :)

sofieellis · 04/08/2017 08:59

I love the elasticated waist trousers:
direct.asda.com/george/school/trousers/boys-school-slim-fit-slim-leg-adjustable-waist-trousers-black/GEM561010,default,pd.html
They are good quality and hard wearing and my son always seems to fall in between waist sizes. One is too tight, the next is too baggy, so these make sure he is comfortable.

I always buy 6 shirts, 2 pairs of trousers and 2 jumpers. Also 2 lots of P.E. kit. That way everything can be washed and ready for the next use.

vicks276 · 04/08/2017 09:11

direct.asda.com/george/school-name-tapes-george,default,pg.html these name tapes save a lot of hassle!

teddygirlonce · 04/08/2017 09:18

Loving that they have such an extensive range of lunch boxes, including some plain coloured glitter ones. These are ideal for older girls whose tastes and fickleness with regards to what's 'cool' (or not) can be a challenge to parents' patience and purse/wallet!

Top tips for #backtoschool, have a savings pot just for uniform related items and put a certain amount into it each week/month. Particularly helpful when there's a transition to a new school (with new uniform). I've done this with DC's transition to secondary school and it's lightened the financial burden considerably! Spread buying non-uniform essentials too - so pick up stationery items cheaply in sales across the year.

These trousers are a must for my DS. He is a tall skinny thing and the elastic waist (along with an elastic belt) with belt loops is the best fit that I can find for him.

I buy 5 pairs so that there is a pair a day and I can just do one load of washing. I buy 6 polo shirts so that I always have one spare in case of morning breakfast incidents.

direct.asda.com/george/george-home/Sistema-620ml-Twist-Bottle-Aqua/002041658,default,pd.html?cgid=D7M1G1C14

This is the best water bottle that I have found that doesn't leak.

clairewilko29 · 04/08/2017 13:18

I buy 3 trousers, 5 shirts & 3 jumpers, can guarantee im buying more jumpers after 2 weeks as they get lost!!

JemIsMyNameNooneElseIsTheSame · 04/08/2017 13:57

The packs of polo shirts are amazing value. I have the choice of white or red for DS who is starting reception in September, but will definitely be going for red as I can never keep whites white!

Love these boys adjustable school trousers direct.asda.com/george/school/trousers/boys-school-longer-leg-adjustable-waist-trousers-black/GEM316394,default,pd.html

My other half made sure we bought five pairs of school trousers , way above the number that everybody else advised . It turned out that he had constantly ripped his when he was a boy and so was channeling his own experience. I hate to say , but it obviously was a family trait and so I was relieved we did .

giddyypixie · 04/08/2017 20:14

This backpack is pretty cool - my son likes things pretty plain so this is a good medium between boring and OTT for him!

For kids that have to wear a tie - always make sure there is a spare in their backpack. That way if they mislay the one they were wearing (after PE for instance), they have another one to put on so they don't get told off!

zebedee01 · 04/08/2017 20:37

These shirts are great! My son comes home with allsorts on his shirts and these wash and dry easily plus they are nice and cheap so not the end of the world if I can't get the stains out!!!
direct.asda.com/george/mens-shirts/tailor-cutter-5-pack-slim-fit-long-sleeved-shirts/GEM546464,default,pd.html

My tip is defo label everything, you would be amazed what goes missing at school! Also good quality shoes are a must as they are wearing them all day long. I recommend Clarks, they are the only ones that ever lasted more than 2-3 months for my son!!
