It’s officially December, which means that most can’t deny that it’s time to start thinking about putting up your Christmas decorations!
To celebrate their Christmas range, Homebase want to know how you decorate your Christmas tree.

So, do you have a family ritual for decorating the tree? Do you put on some festive music and get all the DC to help, or are you quite particular about what goes where? Does each year mean a new theme for your decorations, or do you like to mix old and new? Do you love homemade decorations, or do you prefer a more polished look? And finally, the ultimate question, is it a star or an angel on top?

However you decorate your tree, post a comment below to be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Homebase voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

My tree has to be done in my style, most of the time the family leave me to it. This year it's gold and silver with white wooden birds and hearts dotted around. It's a mixture of older styles and brand new baubles. I use gold tinsel and gold beads to finish the look off. This year I've even got some clear quartz in spiral cages to create even more shine. Topped off with a big gold star. Smile

Ours goes up relatively late, as we have a birthday to get out of the way first.

I am a bit of a traditionalist, so it has to be a real tree and lots of twinkly lights but only warm white ones and no flashing please! Lots of red and gold decorations and maybe a bit of green, and natural bits like pinecones (I also got some chocolate-brown metallic and glittery baubles that look surprisingly good!).

Yes to tinsel, but strictly only nice tinsel, not ratty bits - my favourite is bronze or flame-coloured.

The kids now do it with us, but I sometimes do a bit of sneaky rearranging afterwards, not too much though as they should have some say too!

Have still not found the perfect thing to go on top though... I like a star, but a lot of them are too big or heavy and don't stay on well. Still experimenting!

My husband and I decorate the tree with ornaments we have collected from around the world and remind us of our travels. We then have to try to cat/baby proof it!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 16/12/2016 09:31

DH is a designer so it's coordinated decorations all the way! However our 7yo has discovered Hama Beads so we have a few homemade (well executed Grin) decorations that have sneaked on.

Due to having a toddler, we only have decorations on the top half of the tree anyway!!

bubbleybooboo · 16/12/2016 10:02

I have warm white lights (800) which i put on first and then put my collection of disney figurine decorations on that i have collected over a few years from the disney store. I have all the princesses and some of the classic characters such as pinocchio and the rescuers. I then put my big white butterflys on and swirl them from the top to the bottom as i dont like tinsel so it adds an extra something special. We then add my sons special baubles in his memory at the top under the firework style star which sits on the top.

I dont tend to add anything else and its a running joke that if it aint disney its not coming on!

Onedaylikethi5ayear · 16/12/2016 19:24

We always try and pick up decorations to remind us of places we have been or things we have done. Our tree is a bright colourful mix of lovely memories. We just had our firat baby and we selected her a decoration at the first Christmas Fair we took her to, it has pride of place on the tree. My DH describes the tree as looking like 'Christmas has thrown up on it' Hmm

heyday · 17/12/2016 08:29

I love decorating the Christmas tree and really enjoy getting the decorations out as each one has a personal happy memory attributed to it which is a wonderful way to start the Christmas season.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 17/12/2016 15:19

We have a completely uncoordinated mix of decorations we've collected over the years: sequins-and-felt creations from nursery, pretty gifted baubles, glittery ducks for some reason, fairy lights, strings of beads, and the ugly fairy I chose when I was 4 at the top!

hungryhungryhippos · 17/12/2016 19:01

I like to use homemade decorations

JollyHockeyGit · 17/12/2016 21:16

We usually have my nephews and nieces round to help and put on Christmassy music. Everyone obviously has a turn in the massive box the tree's kept in! It's usually decorated by the kids and sort of a little bit (a lot) redecorated later that night...

goose1964 · 17/12/2016 22:29

We always have a fresh free ,my husband always puts the lights on and 8I do the tinsel then we both put the baubles on, when the kids were small we had an eclectic tree, now they are older it's mainly silver with jewel accents

Zipideedodah · 17/12/2016 23:26

The tree goes up on a weekend. I untangle the lights and the decorating is done by DC. I like to add a few homemade decorations each year, so DC are encouraged to do some Christmas crafts during December to make some new ones. I don't like to rearrange their efforts, it's part of Christmas that the tree is theirs to decorate.

PosiePaRumPaPaPumParker · 18/12/2016 07:27

We put our lovely old fairy at the top, coloured lights, and no theme!!

Our tree has a collection of decorations that we have collected over the years, from holidays, markets and nice shops.

The tree is entirely festive and massive.

We all get involved and we listen to Christmas songs whilst we do it.

DucksSake · 18/12/2016 07:50

It's our first Christmas as a family this year, so we are making our own little traditions.
We put our tree up on the first Sunday of Advent, we have gone for silver, blue and pink colours to match our living room colours. Every year we are going to buy a special decoration and gradually replace the cheap basic baubles that are on the tree at the moment.
We have Christmas carols on and our DD puts the star on the top of the tree(with help she's only 9 months old ), we also got a photo of her in front of the tree which we will do every year as she grows.
We have a special bauble in memory of my OH's dad who passed away.

GiraffesAndButterflies · 18/12/2016 08:16

Definitely festive music. I don't like handmade decs I think they look tatty

Something simple in red and gold or silver and gold is my preference. And hopefully I can restrain DD from putting all the baubles on a single branch. She is allowed to flick the switch for the lights at the end though.
Star on top!

Alfieisnoisy · 18/12/2016 10:49

The tree usually goes up as close to Xmas Eve as possible as DS has a birthday on 20th December. However he LOVES the tree and decorating so it often goes up earlier.

I usually stand back and let DS enjoy the decorating of it. I do the lights first though.

We have baubles collected over the years and some hand made tree decorations made by DS in infant school and nursery, I wouldn't part with them for anything. I love home made decorations.

We put a star on top of the tree and the fairy sits on a shelf somewhere .

The cat takes part in the tree decorating too...in fat more in the wrecking of said tree as she climbs it.

dilydaly · 18/12/2016 14:09

We don't have a theme or coordinating colours/ornaments, we always have a real tree which we go and choose from a local farm together as a family. Once we get it home we cut it to size, put it in the stand and start decorating. Lights first, then tinsel and crackers and then the ornaments and baubles. All our ornaments are unique, each one with it's own story or memory. Many are baubles made by the kids in school at Christmas time over the years, lastly the Cadbury's tree chocolates, half of which usually get eaten before they make it on to the tree ! :D

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/12/2016 17:50

I always do mine when the kids are at school so they come home to a lovely surprise.
Tree decs are all different shades of gold and white lights.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/12/2016 17:52

Oh and a gold star on top which a little Lego angel perches on as dc love Lego.

NauticalDisaster · 18/12/2016 19:58

I try to get the tree up on the 1st and it is always a real one. I have no place to store a fake one and I like the smell of a real one.

I don't like matchy-matchy trees so none of our decorations match! They are from all over the place, I buy some everywhere we travel and family/friends add to the mix each year as well.

My DC make decorations every year as well and they take place of pride on the tree.

BT2016 · 18/12/2016 23:04

We put on Christmas music, and put the tree up while having hot chocolate. DD puts our tree topper at the V end- we have a Santa on the top. Special baubles go near the top away from naughty toddler hands!

fabulousfrancesca · 19/12/2016 00:21

Always real, the last couple of years from Homebase. Warm white looks lights are a must for me, and lots of them. My decorations are mostly white with the odd red bit. Lots of hearts, stars and snowflakes.

FuckingHateRats · 19/12/2016 13:40

Always a real tree, and we have an eclectic mix of homemade tat, fancy pants expensive decorations and then the ones we've picked up on holidays to remind us of special memories. Love our tree!

Mybeautifullife1 · 19/12/2016 14:02

The whole family go out the first Sunday in December to choose "the tree". We like a real tree because it makes the house smells lovely. We spend ages choosing. We get it home and then decorate to the background music of carol's. DH puts on the lights and then it's down to the kids to put on the decorations. There's no colour scheme and no right or wrong. The kids are each given a specially chosen decoration each year to add too. Once the kids are in bed I sneakily add chocolate decorations too and see who's the first to notice.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 19/12/2016 15:49

We put on a bing Crosby sinatra Nat king Cole at Al. Mix

The kids help me and I move stuff

We drink mulled wine from tankards and eat matchmakers.

Dh watches and does the star at the top
