It’s officially December, which means that most can’t deny that it’s time to start thinking about putting up your Christmas decorations!
To celebrate their Christmas range, Homebase want to know how you decorate your Christmas tree.

So, do you have a family ritual for decorating the tree? Do you put on some festive music and get all the DC to help, or are you quite particular about what goes where? Does each year mean a new theme for your decorations, or do you like to mix old and new? Do you love homemade decorations, or do you prefer a more polished look? And finally, the ultimate question, is it a star or an angel on top?

However you decorate your tree, post a comment below to be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Homebase voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

We have , ahem, 6 trees.
Living room I do which is white and silver (mine)
Outside red berry lights
Dining room, vomit in a tinsel factory which is the dc
2x dc for their room red and whatever they want
Play room (foot high) on to off the TV red and black.
My house isn't that big it's a small 3 bed semi

lifelongfrugaleer · 08/12/2016 19:17

It's a family affair, Christmas music and food. Everyone usually doing their but except this year it's Being done in stages round decorating

WholeL0ttaRosie · 08/12/2016 19:29

We always have an artificial tree and the decorations are quite boring all colour coordinated. I like to do it by myself (we don't have children) and DH is more than happy to leave me to it. After I've completed the decorating I then spend twice as long moving baubles about so it looks even and balanced from all angles. I've tried being more casual about it but I just can't Blush
Having said that I absolutely love looking at other people's trees where they have a complete mish-mash of decorations, they always seem so welcoming and festive.

This year was a bit scary as I moved in with my boyfriend and we are expecting our first child. We went and got an 8' beautiful real tree to put in the bay window in the living room. I was very worried we wouldn't have enough decorations. I need not have worried both mums and our lovely neighbors have donated lots of lovely decorations.
The tree looks wonderful with my older glass decorations, lots of lovely lights and all the beautiful donated baubles.
I only have to look at it to be reminded of the real meaning of Christmas.

Ashhead24 · 08/12/2016 20:36

We have a standard tree with baubles, tinsel and lights, but we put a Santa Tigger on the top instead of an angel/star. Have done a fairly poor job this year as the one year old keeps removing all the decoration s he can reach. And adding farm animals in their place.

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 08/12/2016 20:57

As many lights as I can fit on (7.5ft tree so at the moment there's 1000) lots of sparkle, mainly gold on a green tree but each year we make anew decoration each. I have 3 largish angels that represent my children and 3 smaller angels that represent my lost babies. They hang next to each other, one large next to one small as I feel each angel baby looks after my children. The children get to go wild with the decs with Christmas music on and a good chat and then when they're in bed I hang my special ones and have little private moment. Its very special and I make sure they all face into the room so it feels like they're included and never forgotten.

Foxedme · 08/12/2016 21:19

Our tree is sort of based on one lovely decoration I got years ago. It's a beautiful old fashioned Father Christmas with long skinny legs, all my other decorations are either in the same colour or are things like foxes, owls or bells. We seem to add one new decoration each year so most of them we've had for years. No tinsel or beads but lots of pretty and different decorations. I love my tree as I can remember each decoration and past family Christmases.

MerlinsBeard87 · 08/12/2016 22:02

We always get a tree on December 1st, it has to be a real one! We have a big box of cheap mixed baubles we bought when we first moved in together as it was all we could afford. Since then we have gathered nicer ornaments from special places, and they are full of so many memories. Most unusually we don't have a star or angel for the top, we have a fox! Last year we were given a baby's first christmas bauble. This year I have put it up high so my toddler can't pull it off! I want us to pick one new piece for the tree every year, but I already made the mistake of letting my toddler hold it in his car seat on the way home and he pulled it apart!

ILikeBigBumpsAndICannotLie · 08/12/2016 22:12

I may have lost my mind when the child was tiny and decided she would probably eat the baubles. So I made a lot of felt decorations that we used again this year, but she's decided to hang them on random door handles around the house instead of the tree. Tree is a bit sparse as a result. We take a trip out for us all to choose a special decoration each year and I'll give her her ones when she is older. I secretly aim to be able to afford a set of German wooden decorations one day.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/12/2016 22:13

In all honesty, our Christmas tree looks somewhat like a happy accident. I make an effort to buy one new tree decoration we really love every year, so it is slowly becoming a diary yif our life as a family

OvO · 08/12/2016 22:19

Our tree is King Tacky Tat Tree. Xmas Grin

I decorate it with my sons, though I basically hand them stuff - so I can say with 100% truthfulness that they decorated it all themselves. So people don't judge me. 😂

We have decorations from when I were but a girl and various bits and pieces bought in recent years. It all goes on. As does aaaaall the tinsel. It's not tacky if there's no tinsel.

There's a star at the top that used to be at the top of my mum and dad tree.

Greenfingeredfun · 08/12/2016 22:22

My husband (then boyfriend) and I moved in together when we were just 17. We are in our late 30s now with two ds's. Our angel on the top of our tree is the very same one which we bought for our first Christmas tree. She isn't the prettiest looking angel anymore, bless her.. but we have very fond memories of buying her from Homebase as giddy teens! Could never replace her Smile

goldenretriever1978 · 08/12/2016 22:31

We buy a new, special bauble each year but our tree is haphazardly decorated!

DarkNanny · 09/12/2016 01:31

In austerity Britain lots of families can't justify the cost of a Christmas tree

Whattocallbabyboy · 09/12/2016 04:22

Each year we persuade my partner to get decorations out of attic. Each year we wrestle with our beautiful hook and hang tree then daddy attempts lights- only for me to take over.

Christmas music on and i do the beading then the children decorate with lots of different decorations collected over the years.

OldBooks · 09/12/2016 06:26

This is our first Christmas where DD actually understands what is going on. We have a small fibre optic light up tree which DD and I put out yesterday and hung small red and gold baubles on, with some special baubles too - our collection is just beginning so only 3 now, one mase by DD last year in nursery and the other two gifts. We have a gold star on top

Hs2Issue · 09/12/2016 06:51

We buy a real tree and I want it up as late as possible and DH and DD want it up far earlier. This year I'm trying for 17/18 December despite protests. When we finally get it a Christmas cd will go on and we'll try and do it in some Oder with DD chucking stuff on and the cat stealing baubles. It will be wonderful.

DoItTooJulia · 09/12/2016 06:54

We try not to do it in a huff! I leave DH to the lights and let the kids decorate it while I watch with a glass of wine. When they've gone to bed I fiddle with it. Less huffing that way!

ohlittlepea · 09/12/2016 07:06

We have golden bows and dripping decorations and round clear baubles. This year we have some bright colourful decorations made by my two year old too ! There's a glittery star at the top. We choose one decoration each year as a reminder of something significant in the year, so a rocking horse for when our baby was born etc.

Thirdload · 09/12/2016 07:31

Our tree is decorated with the usual mix of odds and ends that gets added to each year as the children make more decorations. On top of the tree we have a toy octopus, which has turned into a family tradition

Rosehips · 09/12/2016 08:02

Some homemade some shop all the breakables have been put away til the kids are bigger and nothing on top

voyager50 · 09/12/2016 10:19

We have a tree with colour co-ordinated baubles and a few home made ones or souvenirs from holidays are added each year. On the top is a silver star given as a gift from a neighbour a few years ago.

iwantavuvezela · 09/12/2016 10:23

Ours starts with my husband and daughter going to pick a tree. They bring it home and I marvel at it and tell them its the best tree we have had yet!
Then I drag out the old box from the loft which contains an assortement of decorations, including some cheap lights my husband bought (note to self if you want tiny little fairy lights don't send out someone to buy these who thinks a multi coloured string will do).
Then we start to place all the decorations on the tree, and I remind my daughter where we got them, who made them, one's she made .....
Despite sometimes twitching to hang it all myself, the tree is usually an eclectic mix and I love it (even the garish multi coloured lights have grown on me!)

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 09/12/2016 12:12

DC and I decorate the tree every year, usually the week before Christmas Eve. We have a fake prelit tree. I have a varied collection of decorations of various colour, some from my own childhood that I took when I got my first house. When I was younger, I used to treat myself to 2 ornaments in the Debenhams sale every year. A lot of my decorations are over 30 years old now, and still look lovely.

Since DC was born, I have bought a decoration every year with the year on it and these will be passed to DC when they have their own house. Apart from that, I always buy decorations in pairs.

PointlessUsername · 09/12/2016 12:19

We have a large real tree, The dc start off with good intentions and excitement of decorating the tree.

After 5 mins they all quickly disappear and I am left to my own devices.

The tree then needs redecorating every other day as the ddog cannot walk past without knocking baubles off....
