As part of their on-going brightFuture initiative, Unilever wants to hear about the little things you as a family do to help make the world a better place. We know that having children often makes parents think more about the world around them and makes you want to take steps to help provide a better, more sustainable future for your children.

Here’s some more information from the team at Unilever:

“The Unilever brightFuture initiative focuses on small changes that can make big differences and how we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.”

“Since the launch of the Sustainable Living Plan, Unilever has helped 482 million people all over the world; for instance the Dove Self Esteem Project has helped 19 million young people have more self-confidence, Domestos has given 5 million people improved access to toilets and Persil, in partnership with Unicef, has given 10 million children access to education. This work is extremely important to us and we are really proud to have been awarded industry leadership for our work in the Household and Personal Care products industry group by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.”

“To see some of the amazing stories from the Unilever brightFuture initiative so far, have a glimpse at this short video.”

“Unilever brightFuture is looking to inspire and celebrate people who are making a difference in their local community. This is often through small acts that tackle wider, global problems and therefore make a positive impact for the planet as a whole. We want to encourage others to join the brightFuture initiative at brightfuture.unilever.co.uk which has already seen over 290 million acts shared!”

We’d love to hear what you and your family do to help make the world a better place and what you would like to do in the future. Whether it’s small things such as turning the tap off while you brush your teeth and doing laundry at a lower temperature, or helping your local community get together to help make a positive impact, Unilever want to hear from you.

Everyone who posts a comment below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thank you and good luck!

I get my 3yo DS to help load the washing machine. Raising my three sons to be feminists (including seeing household chores as everyone's problem instead of 'women's work') is the best thing I can possibly think of to change the world.

shydaylily · 11/10/2016 10:46

grow our own veg and try to walk to work/ school

NauticalDisaster · 11/10/2016 10:59

Our favourite activities are all outdoors so we make sure we tread lightly and we always tidy up garbage that others have left behind. We take a small bin bag with us when we go yo the beach or walk through the forest and pick up the empty packages etc. that we find.

columbine75 · 11/10/2016 12:12

Cloth nappies, eco cleaning products, recycling, reducing waste...we try our best!

jandoc · 11/10/2016 12:38

we are very good with our recycling and we also help all our neighbours with theirs.

stefalfie11 · 11/10/2016 14:10

We try to do lots of little things like always using the washing line instead of the dryer, recycling, walking short distances instead of using the car and buying second hand items such as furniture.

kacky · 11/10/2016 14:35

We do the norm when it comes to saving power but we also look after the planet by not dropping litterand buying things that last instead of on a whim

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/10/2016 14:40

Avoid Unilever products.

Maclairey · 11/10/2016 15:17

This is something I need to focus more time on tbh. We recycle everything and try to minimise usage of resources such as water and electricity. I do feel we could be doing more and its something I need to put some effort into really.

goodomens830 · 11/10/2016 16:17

We pick up other people's rubbish. My daughter has even approached people she has seen dropping litter and offered to put it in the bin for them :-) We have explained the impact of litter since they were very young

Ness1234 · 11/10/2016 16:41

Volunteering, showing your children that by helping others with nothing expected in return does and will make the world a better place.

vixxx666 · 11/10/2016 17:39

We are very careful above up our energy and water usage.

mo3733 · 11/10/2016 19:39

we conserve lots of things and actively recycle.

sweir1 · 11/10/2016 20:51

Anywhere under a mile and we walk. And my kids sleep very well at night!

seeingdouble2 · 11/10/2016 21:17

Lots of things keeping the heating on low, recycling , washing at low temps.
Also food waste is another big thing I try and get the family to stop. Since I've been doing this we have been roughly saving about £100 a month which is a huge amount over the year.

LeeR1985 · 11/10/2016 22:19

Me and my daughter always sort out our recycling and take it to the local recycling centre every week. We also donate old books and clothes to charity shops to reduce our waste and help others at the same time :)

SendARavenToRiverRun · 11/10/2016 22:30

We recycle or reuse and buy secondhand if possible.
Heating- thermostat is tuned down to 19. No one has ever noticed and it's saving energy and money.
Lights off when we leave the room. Telly off at night not just in standby.
We walk and use the bus when possible.
Smile

fluffypacman · 12/10/2016 13:10

We used reusable nappies and I use reusable sanitary products which Unilever will be pleased to know that I have to wash! I've encourage my children 3&4 to put things in the recycling and they now ask which bin to use. We also walk or cycle to school for fitness and also to prevent waste of fuel.

BarbaraAtTheGardenParty · 12/10/2016 13:28

We don't flush the toilet for wees!

goldenretriever1978 · 12/10/2016 13:28

My daughter always stands up for children when she sees anyone being picked on as she hates unfairness.

winterpark · 12/10/2016 16:31

We definately recycle alot more now, and instead of always putting the heating on we put on an extra layer of clothing :)

We make bug hotels and hang them on the tree in the little patch of ground outside our block of flats.
