As part of their on-going brightFuture initiative, Unilever wants to hear about the little things you as a family do to help make the world a better place. We know that having children often makes parents think more about the world around them and makes you want to take steps to help provide a better, more sustainable future for your children.

Here’s some more information from the team at Unilever:

“The Unilever brightFuture initiative focuses on small changes that can make big differences and how we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.”

“Since the launch of the Sustainable Living Plan, Unilever has helped 482 million people all over the world; for instance the Dove Self Esteem Project has helped 19 million young people have more self-confidence, Domestos has given 5 million people improved access to toilets and Persil, in partnership with Unicef, has given 10 million children access to education. This work is extremely important to us and we are really proud to have been awarded industry leadership for our work in the Household and Personal Care products industry group by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.”

“To see some of the amazing stories from the Unilever brightFuture initiative so far, have a glimpse at this short video.”

“Unilever brightFuture is looking to inspire and celebrate people who are making a difference in their local community. This is often through small acts that tackle wider, global problems and therefore make a positive impact for the planet as a whole. We want to encourage others to join the brightFuture initiative at brightfuture.unilever.co.uk which has already seen over 290 million acts shared!”

We’d love to hear what you and your family do to help make the world a better place and what you would like to do in the future. Whether it’s small things such as turning the tap off while you brush your teeth and doing laundry at a lower temperature, or helping your local community get together to help make a positive impact, Unilever want to hear from you.

Everyone who posts a comment below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thank you and good luck!

My family make real efforts to actively make positive changes now — despite failures in the past, our chances of success in the future are much higher., It’s what we do right NOW that makes the big difference in the future rather than what happened in the past.

In my case, I’ve had everything from family tragedies to major sports injuries that required surgery. I cannot let these past events jinx my future. I could have easily allowed these bad experiences to turn me into a chronic pessimist. But as long as I keep steady in doing the right things now, I will succeed in the future no matter what the past was like.

As a result of my own past misfortunes, I’ve made such changes from taking steps on injury prevention to actively re-balancing my day-to-day lifestyle. These changes have paid off in much better results compared to my past.

What you do now can drastically change your future for the better. Think about anything in your past that you would have liked to change if you could. Then make positive changes so that your future will look brighter than ever before.

We are avid 'turn the lights off' when not in the room. Even the little one (4) is very good at it and will often tell us off for leaving the lights on! We also recycle where we can.

imustbemadme · 16/10/2016 17:22

My pet peve is the tap running unnecessarily! Everyone in our house only turns the tap on when they need it. We've also had an energy meter installed in the kitchen so we can see which appliances /lights etc cost the most to run!

money is not everything but I don't want my children to worry about university fees and so on so I have set up a savings account for my children to hopefully take some stress away from uni fees

iamsaranna · 16/10/2016 20:20

We do lots of walking and cycling and have also been doing a lot of recycling.
My DS has also started "rewilding" part of the garden into a wild flower meadow hoping to attract bees and butterflies.

marshgirl · 16/10/2016 21:50

We do not own a car so we all walk everywhere, this helps her keep fit as her school is 30minutes away and she will do this twice a week. We also do not waste food , left over dinners can be interesting.

mclarkie · 17/10/2016 10:10

We drive an electric car, recycle as much as possible, and have switched to a green electric and gas energy provider.

The best way to help the environment is to have less children! :)

We looked in to ways of saving water and installed a device in the loo that means you only use half the amount of water when flushing. Brilliant!
My son also gives food out to the homeless after work. If it doesn't sell, they give it to him to do as he wishes and he hands it out. I'm so proud of him for being so kind!

We make our children aware of their surroudings and the little things that they can do that add up to make a big difference, for example turing the lights off, turing the tap off, buying locally sourced produce and growing some of their own. Our household is very good at recycling and our waste is now minimal.

Thanks to everyone for posting on the thread! The winner of the voucher is Doubtfuldaphne - congratulations!

Croker62 · 17/10/2016 19:52

We use the car as little as possible and either walk or ride our bikes.
We re-use anything we possibly can and enjoy making craft out of recyclables.
We do our best to educate our children about looking after the world we have and what little things we can all do to make it better for them and their children.

missserendipity · 17/10/2016 20:37

The children and I buy/donate an item (food, toothbrush etc) and place it in a box everyday from 1st December and take the box to a homeless shelter. It is something the children enjoy doing and makes them realise how fortunate they are as well as instilling compassion for other people.

bridge16 · 17/10/2016 20:51

We grow our own veg which the children love and the kids are also very well trained at recycling :-)
