Have you ever turned your back for what seemed like seconds only to return to a pencil/crayon ‘work of art’ on your newly painted walls? Has there ever been an ‘incident’ involving a TV and a football? Have your children ever wreaked havoc with an unguarded tin of paint? If so, Valspar wants to know.

Valspar say "With great durability, Valspar Paint can withstand even the toughest parts of daily living and maintain its colour (even hundreds of scrubs!). So if those tiny, mucky hands and colouring crayons go astray – fear not. We have made sure you can scrub away the mess without the worry of taking a layer of paint off too – just in case your little one does decide to release their inner Picasso on your living room walls."

So, what are the most awful, or funniest, things that your children have done to your house while your back was turned? Whether the crime was big or small, Valspar would love to hear your stories.

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

I left my twins in their bedroom for a few minutes, while I nipped to the loo. When I came back there was blue powdered paint everywhere. The paint was on a shelf they couldn't reach - however, what I didn't think of was them climbing on top of each other to get it! 10/10 for ingenuity anyway!

They used this technique many times as toddlers, escaping from their travel cot, over baby gates and even climbing on top of bedroom furniture! We had to rearrange everything in their room, to prevent them from climbing and I didn't dare let them out of my sight for a second!

My daughter is only 8 months old, so plenty of time for "household horror". So far we have had catapulting poo on wall, carpet and curtains; and regularly have a tidal wave over the floor of the bathroom (as we only have a shower, we have to use the baby bath). She is already showing her hand at mischief, and has a cute little smile which she gives when she is doing something impish. 😆😇😈

DS has never drawn on the walls, but he has been involved in a freak fish oil accident which is still on the wall and refuses to go, despite 5 coats of matte paint!

I gave him his vitamin, put the kettle on, came back and he had pinched the tablet, shooting fish oil all over the wal, the TV, the ceiling, everywhere. We now have a spotty oil wall which was only made worse by my scrubbing with washing up liquid in a desperate bid to get it off!

Paint just doesn't cover it, the oil comes through Sad

My 2 year old mumbling what's this to himself in his bedroom then yuck. Thinking a sudocream incident I wandered in expecting a mess, he discovered his nappy comes undone and had discovered his poo. :( bed, hair, cot and the curtains he had been playing with. His bed stunk for ages.

My one year old found a tub of lipbalm and fingerpainted all over my beautiful newly hung wallpaper. The greasy marks are never coming off!

del2929 · 07/03/2016 12:44

about 4 years ago my 7yo took the toy cricket bat and put a crack through the new tele!!! eeeek... had to send it off for repair and that took over 2 month. we laugh about it now....

Our eldest drew a road on our freshly painted magnolia living room wall. Cant say we were best pleased!

DS Put a hotdog in the washing machine to 'clean' the ketchup off of it - for anyone who has not witnessed the durabilty of hotdogs, I can say they are quite remarkable and take aaaages to break down even after multiple cycles (perhaps supermarkets should take note for future carrier bag material?!). I was picking pieces out of clothes nooks and crannies and the machine for weeks. It DID get the ketchup off though Wink

DD got hold of a tub of Vaseline and 'decorated' the downstairs bathroom with it! I'm still finding greasy marks now and this was months ago. It gets everywhere Shock

I left my eldest son alone in his room with a very large book of tiny stickers. When I cam back, it was like it had snowed baby animal characters! On the floor, on his bed, on his arms on his head...

nerysw · 07/03/2016 20:59

He writes on his own face quite a lot which is mild compared with the time he flooded the bathroom and water was pouring through the ceiling underneath. His sister used to put things (my make up bag, her Dad's electric shaver, etc) down the toilet and hide things (phones, purse...) when she was little. She also put dents in my front door and tumble drier and pulled a cupboard door off its hinges. They're lovely most of the time though!

My toddler son and 5yr old daughter were happily finger painting on the large canvas boards I laid out for them in the kitchen. I had dust sheets down on the floor to keep mess to a minimum. No paint on the floor or up the walls, or even on the freezer, washing machine etc, and as I praised them for their lovely artwork and keeping the paint on the canvasses, the dog walked in with red, blue, yellow, green and purple handprints all over him.

matphil · 07/03/2016 22:36

I was painting my living room, one wall was green and the other 3 white. I had done the green the day before and had just finished the white. The phone rang so I went into the kitchen to answer it, when I came back in my son had decided to help me paint by painting the green wall white.

fridaykitten · 07/03/2016 23:21

DD used to wipe snot on her bedroom wall!! Utterly disgusting! Didnt want to use tissues but invested in some bright cartoon covered ones and problem solved!

Sarah250187 · 07/03/2016 23:30

Brought my little one a sticky alien toy and went into his room the next day to find the whole ceiling covered in grease like stains where he had been throwing it and sticking it to the ceiling!! Cannot get the marks off so have to repaint it now! X

Not me, but my best friend left her two little girls watching tv while she was decorating the room next door. She was there ages as the girls were quietly watching tv. Well actually no, it turns out they had decided to redecorate the lounge as a lovely surprise for mummy. With nail varnishes.

When we were in between houses we stayed with the in-laws for 6 weeks. My middle child was then nearly 3 and decided to scribble all over their landing wall with pen. That was 8 years ago now and you can still see it through the many coats of paint that have tries to cover it!

Roseberrry · 08/03/2016 14:36

My husband was painting our living room and stupidly left the paint open and unattended. Next thing I know our 5 year old is proudly showing off about all the painting he has helped with, smiley faces painted everywhere!!

GrooveHeart · 08/03/2016 16:48

Last week I was on the phone trying to book my DD's birthday party when a delivery arrived. At the same time my DD, who is potty-training was upstairs on the toilet. All of a sudden I heard the tap going for ages and when I went up I found her soaking wet (and also the bathroom floor). She had put the plug in and decided to wash her hair in the sink!

el2606 · 08/03/2016 20:21

Getting one of those slime-in-a-pot play things all over the carpet!

allybird1 · 08/03/2016 20:56

My dd ate my mother's day bouquet whilst my back was turned .. or at least had a good nibble on it. This penchant for flowers apparently came from myself as my mother tells me (and anyone who wants to listen ) when I was a toddler I loved nothing more than striping down the family house plants, especially rubber plants. I also used to wait till the spring flowers came into bloom to dehead them and throw them over next doors garden. What a busy child I must have been.

Visiting the in-laws small bungalow for a stay. My husband had gone to the bedroom in the afternoon for a lie down to close his eyes and my mother-in-law and I sat in the kitchen. My 2 year old went into the bedroom and I thought that would be OK, and even after my mother-in-law suggested he was being very quiet I was being very naive to suggest I was sure he was alright because my husband was in there. But I eventually did check and discovered that my son was very quietly dipping his hands into the tub of Sudacrem cream and had been spreading it all over a chair and on his face. It was in his eyes as well and as he looked up and saw me he suddenly wailed. His eyes were OK in the end, however getting the cream out of the fabric of the chair suit was a different matter!

Dd's godmother who has no children herself, kindly gave her a white paper jumpsuit toy with paints to decorate it. Supposedly washable ink....well, the red and blue marks are still faintly visible on our carpet, despite numerous treatments, many years later. But it was meant to be washable, she protested!

NotWastingTime · 09/03/2016 12:57

My son, then aged about 18 months, asked for a drink while I was putting washing away in the bedroom (living in a flat at the time, it was next to the living room). I shouted and told him I'd get him one in a minute, only to walk into the living room just after then to see him sitting in the middle of the carpet with a beaker filled (and obviously over-flowing!) with a full bottle of milk!! He said he was trying to help me.

Never did get the smell out of the carpet despite trying everything possible (soda water, bicarb etc etc). It had to go so although he might have saved me a bit of time, he cost us a lot of money!
