We’ve been asked by Pampers to find out about the biggest challenges Mumsnetters’ have faced when changing your DCs’ nappies.

Pampers say “Have you ever left somewhere because of a wet nappy incident or cancelled a trip over fears of changing facilities? If so, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, we recently asked 1000 mums about their nappy changing nightmares and a quarter told us they have been tempted to cancel a trip for fear of a lack of changing facilities, while 36% have admitted to heading for the exit due to wet nappy incident. Not only that but 71% said that finding somewhere to change baby when they were out and about was either quite or very stressful. At Pampers, we understand that all this stress and wet nappy drama means baby’s happiness, and therefore your own, is interrupted.

As a parent, you know that there’s truly nothing more rewarding than seeing your little one uninterruptedly playing and developing. But when disrupted by the irritation of wetness, or a lengthy nappy change, their experiences are disturbed. That’s where NEW Pampers Baby-Dry Pants come in. They are easy to change and provide up to 12 hours of dryness – no other pant is drier! Simply pull them on and then, when it’s time for a change, remove by tearing away at the sides. So now you can change your baby’s nappy whilst they’re standing, bringing an end to the wriggle-wrestles on the changing mat and making negotiating changing facilities much less of a chore! This means that you and baby can enjoy uninterrupted happiness playtime, night-time, anytime!”

So, what’s the biggest nappy changing challenge you’ve faced? What has been the most difficult changing time for you? If you could invent something to help with changing, what would it be?

Share your challenging changing stories on this thread – whether funny, stressful or downright nightmarish, Pampers would love to hear about it!

I've had numerous times when I've had to change baby and myself-mainly with newborns when the poo just doesn't seem to stop, ever! Just as they stop doing that and you get more confident, they start wriggling more! I don't think I've ever put off going anywhere due to nappy changes tho.

Trying to change DS in a restaurant bathroom when they had inexplicably installed the pull down changing table at eye level! Admittedly I'm not the tallest of people but to get him on the table I would have had to lift him above my head. We ended up perfecting the 'standing up change' that day!

Cailin7 · 09/11/2015 16:14

I have not had any terrible experiences thankfully, and learnt from mum and gran with my 1st DC to change baby on my lap. It has been a wise and useful bit of advice as the majority of places do not have baby changing facilities.

My worst was when my little girl pooed after a week - she was bf so didn't poo that much!

I was out at a cafe with my friend and her baby and I thought I could smell something! Next thing it was down her babygrow and down her leg. Got her changed and it was everywhere over the changing mat and changing table.

I was getting stressed and luckily my friend helped me but the outfit was straight in the bin...luckily I had a spare!!

eww

Changing facilities in restaurants! Where they place the changing table impossibly high - i mean like head height in one case. Often because the changing area is in a cramped disabled toilet. My husband is thankfully taller than me so has managed but now our dd is a toddler its just easier to find sensible facilities elsewhere after our meal.

Santress · 09/11/2015 16:33

Not really the worst nappy changing experience but certainly the most frustrating I think is shopping centres that have baby changing facilities in the disabled toilet which you can only be in by radar key - and no staff around to assist or let you in

My little 3 month old LOVES to pee pee on my mummy while im changing his nappy and kicks his little legss. Me and the other half have developed a nappy changing song (aka the nap nap song) which seems to work a treat and results in a distracted smiley happy baby who forgets to pee pee on his lovely mummy! x

The most difficult is on board an air-plane during turbulence! Very messy.

kslatts · 09/11/2015 17:26

Going into a baby changing room at a theme park and then realizing that the nappies were in the car.

helenmary25 · 09/11/2015 17:27

Convincing my partner that it's his turn

PallasCat · 09/11/2015 18:49

Not a mumma yet... counting down the months! Something that strikes me in England is the lack of good quality public conveniences for this in most towns. In my experience in e.g. Scotland, most towns and villages have fairly decent public toilets. Thinking of where I'm likely to be out and about with little one once it arrives, it seems like most available facilities you either have already had to pay an entrance fee to get in somewhere, or would have to pop into a cafe for example, so that you can use the washroom, but then would end up having to buy a drink or something to justify it.

when I had my son I forgot that little boys pee upwards and the first time I did his nappy he peed all over my face I learnt to put a small piece of cotton wool on him before I leant in to do the nappy up

StickChildNumberTwo · 09/11/2015 19:48

One of my early trips out on my own with my daughter I was part way through changing her when the poo started again, all over the only clean nappy I had with me. I always remember to take more than one nowadays...

Maclairey · 09/11/2015 20:48

I have two. My 7 month old who constantly flips over on his front during a nappy change.

And my 2.5 year old who wants to "help" clean himself with the wipes and invariably ends up with poo all over his hands. Fun times.

mave · 09/11/2015 21:07

I remember going to grab canaria and changing her after a poo standing up as there was no baby changing and the toilet was tiny! It was so difficult, thank god she's toilet trained now, she was always a nightmare to change as would never keep still unless she had a toy, my phone or something to entertain her!!!

CheeseAtFourpence · 09/11/2015 21:22

When DD was teething we had weeks of awful poos! Explosions out of nappy and over baby gro and clothes! Whenever I went out I had to take plenty of changes. And I was always worried about it happening in the middle of a shop or cafe.

I also had a wriggler - learnt the hook my leg over her as I changed her sometimes as I needed more hands!

tubbyj · 09/11/2015 21:27

Always hated the runny poo where it squidged up the back and the whole body suit needs changing

littleme96 · 09/11/2015 21:40

We had to deal with the most disgusting teething poo explosion at a castle once. We were right at the top and her nappy had leaked all over my Husband who was carrying her in the sling. We managed to make it out and had to do a very messy nappy change in the boot of the car. I think her babygro ended up being thrown away because it was beyond saving by that point!

Justremember · 09/11/2015 21:53

I remember needing to change a nappy on the train, so I carried the baby, the nappy changing bag and my rucksack to the toilet, tried to squeeze into the tiny toilet then realised I was wedged in and couldn't turn round to shut the toilet door. Not enough room to manoeuvre.

Also remember taking my 6-week old baby to see the health visitor for a routine check up and she did a poo (the baby, not the health visitor), and I remember wanting to look like I'd mastered the whole nappy changing thing in front of the health visitor. I started off pretty confidently, but then my daughter started to cough so I instinctively picked her up and she projectile vomited over the health visitors room, and as I had picked her up the sticky tab on her nappy had stuck to my arm. I just stood there with a half naked baby held at arms length with a dirty nappy hanging off my arm and vomit all over an otherwise pristine room! All I could say was "I just fed her"

kerryv · 09/11/2015 21:57

Being peed in the face by my first son. Aargh!

sweir1 · 09/11/2015 22:19

It is not so much the changing but it is the bloody wipes. Someone needs to invent wipes that come out individually

Clairescottshug · 09/11/2015 22:37

Breastfed nappy expulsion of scrambled egg... Yeah it happened a LOT!! Now a nappy that actually contained it rather than allowing it all up baby's back.. That would be awesome!!

foxessocks · 09/11/2015 22:38

My dd gets quite excited sometimes at nappy change time (sill at age 21 months!!) she waves her arms up and down happily and sometimes gets a handful of poo by accident then smears it on her face or possibly on my face!! Yuck yuck yuck. I always have a wipe ready in my hand and I remove any long sleeved cardigans beforehand!

Pantone363 · 09/11/2015 22:42

Changing 7 mnth old DD on my lap during a 10 hr flight to Cuba. She let out an almighty fart and fell off my lap on to the floor Shock I ended up catching her by one ankle whilst everyone looked to see who had let rip!

cagsd · 09/11/2015 23:08

I have had so many awful nappy changing experiences with 3 boys, but the one that sticks in my mind for most awfulness, was when I was at DH's works-Christmas-party-for-the-kids with our then 21 month old DS1. It was in the most child-unfriendly location: an out of the way bar / social club. There were no proper changing facilities so I had to change his nappy with me sitting on the loo, with him balanced on my knee. The floor was a river of pee, the sinks didn't work, the whole place stunk! It was a nightmare.
