MNHQ here - wanting to know: which TV Christmas ads can you remember?

AnnMumsnet · 19/10/2015 10:33

Hello all

Apologies for the Christmas-related question but we're doing a bit of work on TV Christmas ads (for stores, brands or products) and we want to come up with a good wide-ranging list of all the Christmas ads we can collectively remember.

It would be great if you could post here to list any that occur to you - from recent years or from further back. If you can add the name of the product/shop/brand and any identifying details or YouTube links that would be great.

Thanks
MNHQ

I remember the following

Coca Cola one
Irn brut snowman one
John Lewis ones last 4. Years
Iceland ones with Kerry katana and Peter Andre
M and s 'it's not just Christmas...'
Toys are us with Jeffrey
Park brochures/ vouchers
Sainsburys one from last year

Probably a few more but these are the ones that I remember remember

dementedma · 19/10/2015 22:18

Cockburn's port always seemed very decadent

PesoPenguin · 19/10/2015 22:29

I loved the one where the soldier returns home to surprise his kids (Sainsburys? It was part of a longer advert about family Christmases)

Also loved the WW1 one and of course the Coca Cola ones every year.

MagersfonteinLugg · 19/10/2015 23:05

Holidays are coming, holidays are coming. Coca Cola. Has nothing to do with xmas but always sticks in my mind for some reason.

Sgtmajormummy · 19/10/2015 23:14

There was a certain bizarre Coca Cola advert I only saw once about a Father Christmas Bootcamp. There were all different styles of FCs dressed in traditional garb.

They picked up one doddery old guy like a battering ram (a dummy obviously) and shoved him up the chimney! Then he got to his feet and uttered a feeble "ho ho ho"...ShockConfusedGrin
I think it was to warn you off imitation cola drinks.
Off to YouTube it.

MrsDeathOfRats · 19/10/2015 23:22

Recently -
John Lewis - bear and hare, monty penguin and the boy opening his gift.
M&S - just sparkly loveliness
Littlewoods - mylene klass remember but it bugged me
Sainsburys WWII - brill if not a little long...

Coca cola. Classic.

From further back-
Famous grouse - walking or clucking on red carpet. Amused me.

Not an advert as such, but I love the party hat that appears on Tesco shops.
I drive past one of their hyper markets and oddly get excited around this time to see when it will go up and if it's before 12th November I then get pissed off

scrappydappydoo · 19/10/2015 23:39

John Lewis little boy present one. The jl snowman one freaked me out - reminded me of the angels from Dr who..
We rank the ads every year (yes I have no life) sainsburys won last year

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/10/2015 23:54

The Littlewoods one a few years ago. "who put an Xbox under the tree? My lovely lovely mother" what the fuck happened to Father Christmas? If shattering the illusions of a million kids wasn't quite enough it goes on to list the multiple gadgets lovely mother bought for distant relatives that would have put her over a grand in debt. bah humbug

HelenaDove · 20/10/2015 02:04

I loved the John Lewis penguins ad too Cute.

I think i remember the Heinekens snowglobe too.

HelenaDove · 20/10/2015 02:08

vienna here it is Heineken snowglobe ad. I knew your post rang a bell.

Redglitter · 20/10/2015 02:31

My absolute favourite is Cornflakes. It's an old one but gets brought out from time to time. 3 children after having their cornflakes decide to wait up for Santa. The teeniest one wakes up and sees him eating the cornflakes they left for him. She runs over and he says Shhhh with finger to his lips she takes a cornflake and runs back to her hiding place. They all wake up next morning see he's been and say oh maybe next year. The wee cutie one looks at a Santa decoration and says Shhhhh

It's so cute. She's probably about 30 by now mind you

Sgtmajormummy · 20/10/2015 07:58

Sorry for leading you all astray. I had to ask the rest of the family if they remembered the Father Christmas Bootcamp, and it turned out it wasn't Coca Cola but a Season's Greeting from Sky.

It's on YouTube under "Santa Claus training by Marines at Bootcamp". Don't show it to tiny tots!

ThomasinaMerry · 20/10/2015 08:43

Famous Grouse here too!

pillowaddict · 20/10/2015 09:07

M&S with the fairies, John lewis and the penguin and the hibernating bears, boots with the nurse on shift, sainsburys with the football game, Iceland with Peter (!) And Morrison with ant and Dec are the ones that come to mind. Coca Cola always iconic - and the snowman irn bru one too!

leccybill · 20/10/2015 09:36

Wow - I've just watched last year's Boots one about the nurse on Boxing Day - how lovely, brought a tear to my eye. I didn't see it at all on TV last year, was it not shown very much?

I did love the JL one with the boy and his gifts - they haven't topped that yet for me. Matalan did quite a sparkly one last year, it was quite M&S like.

I think Sainsbury's have nailed it the last two years - I wonder if they'll go for a military theme this year? Or something a bit more topical to this year. I'm going to hazard a guess that one ad will feature strangers/refugees being invited in around the Christmas table/receiving gifts.

Zombiemama · 20/10/2015 09:46

The coca cola truck one but the full version I hate the short half assed version they seem to fob us off with!
Again coca cola but the polar bears.. made my christmas when I unwrapped a little polar bear if my own holding it's bottle of coke!
The corn flakes ad with the little girl & Santa was another

Igelei · 20/10/2015 10:37

Probably the first one I remember was a continuity ad which would have been on in about 1975, when I was 2.

It was basically just a little gnome type creature singing, 'Merry Christmas, from I.T.V.' I could sing you it Smile

BumpTheElephant · 20/10/2015 10:43

Not sure if it was a Christmas one or not but the one with the "always a woman to me" song that goes through a woman's life. Think it was John Lewis.

Also remember the sainsbos war one

vienna1981 · 20/10/2015 11:12

Thanks Helena. I thought it might be on YouTube.

Sainsburys from about four or five years ago. Jamie Oliver in Scotland with some middle aged matriarch, preparing for the village party in the hall that night. Not at all realistic but whatever.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 20/10/2015 15:27

This one is lovely:

WhatchaMaCalllit · 20/10/2015 15:28

It's not a Christmas one specifically but I always associate Airport arrivals with Christmas and people coming home from abroad.

Yoghurty · 20/10/2015 18:04

One that I remember from being younger is the Yellow Pages ad where a little boy is trying to kiss a girl under the mistletoe and stands on a YP to reach Smile

Famous Grouse adverts I associate with Christmas. Love the John Lewis ones every year!

heheheheheheh · 20/10/2015 18:30

The sexist Asda one where mum slaved all day in the kitchen then had to eat Christmas lunch balanced on a pouffe,

All the John Lewis ones ever. Monty, boy with present for his parents, bear and hare, the one with the little girl growing up.

AnnMumsnet · 21/10/2015 11:50

Thanks all.
We now have a survey where you can pick your fav Xmas Smile

Anyone remember drag queen duo Hinge and Brackett They used to advertise sherry in the run up to Christmas.

My mum used to buy sherry because they were friends with an older couple who used to visit us and they used to drink it. My gran liked it as well. I still remember the sickly sweet smell.

But it would take me right back to childhood Christmases of the late 70s/early 80s if i smelt it now.
