Old Mutual Wealth has asked us to find out the best pieces of advice Mumsnetters have ever been given.

Here’s what they say, “Old Mutual Wealth is a big advocate of advice. In life and in financial matters, the guidance of someone you trust can make the difference between failure and success.”

So, what’s the best piece of advice someone's given you? Maybe someone has shared a genuinely life changing tip? Perhaps they passed on the secret on how to get your kids to clean their room/go to sleep/eat their greens. We’d also, more specifically, like to hear about the best financial piece of advice you’ve ever received. Whether it’s on how to save? Or maybe on what to do with your savings? Whatever they are, we’d love to hear them!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks

If your salary increases try not to increase your expenditure at the same rate and you are able to save without noticing. Easier done if you get decent pay rises but it worked for me and a number of my friends. The fact we were all shattered from the silky hours we worked probably helped too!

In your twenties try not to keep up spending with friends who earn a lot more - trying to keep debt down at this age really helps later on. Try to organise nights out at venues where you know you can afford drinks or plot holidays you can all afford.

My most loved financial advice came from a very wise woman who told me to 'always cut your cloth to fit'
A mantra for me when I'm juggling income/expenditure.

Best Life advice was to 'Always admire beauty'
I love it, reminds me to live in the moment and acknowledge how lucky I am Smile

Save enough for a rainy day but remember to treat yourself from time to time as you can't take it with you when you die.

Goldmandra · 02/10/2015 13:49

"All behaviour is communication."

It helps me to think about what's behind the behaviour, be it in a child or an adult.

You cannot manage behaviour that you don't understand.

leccybill · 02/10/2015 13:55

If you're going through hell, keep going.
This is my favourite mantra of all time.

Pick your battles

My mum always told me put savings into Premium Bonds. It's not a hugely lucrative investment, but there's always that chance of getting the £1m prize, it's risk-free and you can take your money out at any time. I win as much in regular prizes as I would have gained in interest in a savings account, so I'd say it was pretty good advice. That £1m will be mine one day...

'You have beaten yourself up for a long time and it hasn't worked. Try something different.'
Saved my life.

SoDiana · 02/10/2015 14:25

Another two from my granny.
'Never a lender or borrower be' and
'Love many, trust few and always paddle your own canoe'

AGnu · 02/10/2015 17:46

Don't spend what you don't have. Aside from a mortgage we've never been in debt yet...

Maniacalparrot · 02/10/2015 18:53

Don't decide what you can't do before you try it
Fabulous advice which working mums can benefit from and thus can translate to all areas of life

ButtonMoonLoon · 02/10/2015 19:58

Don't worry about what might happen tomorrow, concentrate on enjoying the riches of today.

MagicAlwaysLeadsToTrouble · 02/10/2015 20:01

Get dressed before you go downstairs in the morning.

Sounds weird but is fantastic to help when getting out the house with small children!

It's so much easier only having to worry about the children even though it often means I'm up and wearing my jeans at 6am rather than coming down in pjs.

My mum told me to enjoy the fleeting time my sons were babies as it all passes too quickly. She was right of course and I really try to keep it in mind each day.

del2929 · 02/10/2015 22:26

dont put gritty hands in snow- ouch

iwasyoungonce · 02/10/2015 22:29

My cousin once said to me that if she ever thinks something nice about someone, she tries to make sure she tells them... i.e. "that colour really suits you" or "you came across really well in that meeting" or "you are always so kind".

She said that compliments can mean so much, and brighten someone's day - so why keep the thought inside your head? Spread the love!

I thought it was really good advice, and often follow it (wherever it sounds natural and appropriate, which isn't always!)

Manners Cost Nothing

TheySayIamparanoid · 03/10/2015 03:27

Never be too busy to hug your children.

Be kind to yourself.

campocaro · 03/10/2015 06:59

“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”
? Julian of Norwich
My best friend who died tragically young said this to me and it has seen me through some difficult times

369thegoosedrankwine · 03/10/2015 07:14

'You are responsible for your own happiness'
'Be kind but don't be stupid' and;
'There are no pockets in shrouds'. This remind me yes it is important to save, pay the mortgage, rent etc. but I enjoy spending money on things I love doing.

Cherrybellyboo · 03/10/2015 07:34

Spend less than you earn :)

BrandNewAndImproved · 03/10/2015 07:54

There's always another day and a fresh start.

DrSausagedog · 03/10/2015 07:58

Best advice when I returned to work after mat leave was to get everything ready the night before. I work 2 days and make both days worth of lunches for me and the DC the day before I work, get 2 days worth of outfits out in advance etc. same with preparing dinner for the slow cooker the night before then leave in fridge overnight.

I'm always so glad of it on work days.

Choose your battles.
