Barclays have asked us to share with Mumsnetters their very latest feature on their Code Playground website which enables children to code a Father’s Day card. Have a go and let us know what you think!

Here’s what Barclays say, “We've built an online playground where kids can start to discover coding. It's a safe place where young explorers can try their hand at fun activities that are based on simple coding principles. We’re very excited to launch the new section of the Playground that gives kids the opportunity to code their very own personalised Fathers’ Day card.”

We’d like you to start getting creative with your DCs on the Code Playground website, click here to start. Once you’ve finished the card please save it as a jpeg and upload it onto this thread to share with us what you’ve created. We’d also love to hear a little more about why you chose that design, how old your DC is and your general thoughts about the Code Playground website and the process of making the card. Looking forward to seeing your designs!

Everyone who posts on this thread with a picture of their DCs Fathers Day card will be entered into a prize draw where 5 Mumsnetters will win a Kano (RRP £119.99), a build-it-yourself computer.

You can view the terms and conditions for this thread here.

Thanks and good luck

I had to help my 3 year old but he chose all the details and pressed some of the keys!
He chose space as he loves space, funk music as it was the best to dance to, his height was 3 because he is 3! His words.

DS1s card - he enjoyed it and did it with only a little help but then got annoyed he couldn't make the more people look more like him/his brother/daddy

He liked making daddy "really fat" though! Despite the fact that DP isn't at all really

Tried this out yesterday afternoon with my two dds aged 6 and 3. Caused a bit of a tussle over the laptop but they were both happy with it in the end. They liked being able to make the characters look like us (kinda). Not sure if they appreciated the coding aspect, but it seems like it might be a nice intro.

Created this with my niece, age 4. What a fun way to start coding! It's easy to use and shows how different words in code can change a lot in the end product.

DS aged 6 made this ecard. He wanted to rush ahead rather than take the time to read the instructions but very quickly worked out how to code what he wanted. He was also keen to see what happened if he put in 0 if it said 1-8, etc. Smile
He spent quite a bit of time choosing the exact hairstyle he wanted; the clothes he thought looked most like what we wear, etc.
He's really interested in how computers and games work so we'd talked about coding before, and he was very excited to try coding himself.
From a practical pov, the coding box appears over the card on the PC. On the tablet the box appears under the card so you can see the changes as you make them, which works better.
I thought this was quite a good introduction to coding for a DC as they can easily see the impact it has on the finished item.
(I also loved the old fashioned type-writer noise as the introduction appeared on the first screen Grin )

This is my son's fathers day card, he enjoyed the activity but required a bit more help and guidance than I first anticipated. He enjoyed choosing colours etc and wanted to put the same outfit on himself and his younger brother as they love to match. Most of all he was very impressed there was the option to include his pet hamster!

My daughter, aged 9, did this and said it was really easy - but she has done a fair bit of coding already. The only problem is that we emailed it to Dad and it never arrived. When we went back to the site there was no way to access her original design so we had to do it all over again, which was rather frustrating.

RhinosAreFatUnicorns · 22/06/2015 12:50

Thank you!!! I'm so chuffed Smile

GardeningWithDynamite · 22/06/2015 13:18

Me too! So excited. Thank you very much.

Wow, thank you so so much. DD1 can't wait to get started, she is delighted.
