Barclays have asked us to share with Mumsnetters their very latest feature on their Code Playground website which enables children to code a Father’s Day card. Have a go and let us know what you think!

Here’s what Barclays say, “We've built an online playground where kids can start to discover coding. It's a safe place where young explorers can try their hand at fun activities that are based on simple coding principles. We’re very excited to launch the new section of the Playground that gives kids the opportunity to code their very own personalised Fathers’ Day card.”

We’d like you to start getting creative with your DCs on the Code Playground website, click here to start. Once you’ve finished the card please save it as a jpeg and upload it onto this thread to share with us what you’ve created. We’d also love to hear a little more about why you chose that design, how old your DC is and your general thoughts about the Code Playground website and the process of making the card. Looking forward to seeing your designs!

Everyone who posts on this thread with a picture of their DCs Fathers Day card will be entered into a prize draw where 5 Mumsnetters will win a Kano (RRP £119.99), a build-it-yourself computer.

You can view the terms and conditions for this thread here.

Thanks and good luck

This is my 7 year old's card. He really enjoyed doing it, was able to do most of it without help, and was excited about the idea of doing his own coding. Thank you!

Just did it with dd. she had great fun doing it, but she's only 4 so a lot of help was needed. I've never done coding before so I found it quite exciting Blush

DingleberryFinn · 31/05/2015 17:41

Photo attached. DS and DD disappointed we can't change how the people look, as none of us look anything like that! But we don't have cats, dogs or fish either...

I tried to enter the competition which I was directed to on completing the card, but it says you have to enter a unique value for the age of DC and the ages of my DC have already been taken!

My DDs and I had great fun creating their card! DD1 is nearly 5 and DD2 is nearly 3. I had to input the info for them, but they/we could easily scroll through the number of choices available to choose what we wanted for each character. DD1 was more involved and she chose who she wanted on the card and most of the other aspects. She wanted the 'dad' and 2 girls to be as much like her, daddy and DD2, and she was very happy with the results! She loved making 'choices' and for her age you don't want too many choices otherwise it takes too long. She did want to have different coloured cats which were one design only and couldn't be edited, but that was her only criticism. She chose the Space theme because 'daddy likes space'! We'll definitely be exploring coding more as a result of our positive experience of using Barclay's Code Playground! Grin

Ah. will have a go with them later today. thanks for this.x

My son aged 9 did this one. Great that it can be done unaided. Also made me see how easy coding can be - was terrified of it before and didn't really understand it.

not quite sure how to get the image on this thread. Here's the link. might try to upload the image as a photo too.

This was done my my 6 year old. It was quite fun to do but it was a bit before we realised that you could click on different parts of the people added to customise them.

The music selection was a bit limited though.

I've just had a play about and made this-

lots of fun and loved the music and backgrounds! Will get the kids on this tomorrow and I think they'll really enjoy it. Not sure if I'm being thick but how do you save it as an image? I'm on a mac so the save option just saves a preview of the page.

My 6 year old ds had fun doing this, I did have to talk him through it and read out some of the text but he picked it up quite quickly. I think coding is important for children and I wish we had things like this when I was at school.

We did this together - my sons are 5 and 2. DS who is 2 chose the numbers and DS who is 5 typed some of it, but I did find that my tablet couldnt cope and had to do it on the PC in the end! Good coding though for little ones! Just a shame you cant choose the daddy's/mummy's/children's appearance a bit better!

Didn't have a clue at first but easy when using values and explaining the number expresses the objects needed to my daughter she got the hang of it. Although couldn't see how to change colours of cats etc...!

nightswift · 02/06/2015 20:31

DS who is 7 did this himself. He found it good fun to do.

We got confused with the link though on the site to upload the card - it takes you to the competition page and the form won't load - it doesn't like the age box (tried on Explorer and Chrome). If it also confusing as not clear whether to enter on the thread or via the link at the end of the card.

Here's my son's card - he's aged 10 and although he loves computers and computer games, he's not had the opportunity to do anything like this before so he really enjoyed it.

DD really enjoyed this, it was pretty easy and good fun. She is 12 so different difficulty levels/more options would have been good.

I entered via the link too, but put DD as 110. She's 11.

Thanks for flagging up the issue with the competition form, this has now been fixed. You can upload your card on this competition page for a second chance to win a Kano computer.

I think I already did- is there a way you can check please?

mariamenendez · 04/06/2015 21:23

Nellie, aged 5 (nearly 6) loved doing this card. We had to squeeze it in when her dad wasn't looking, so every morning she would wake me early, 'please can we do Daddy's e-card!' She understood how to do it straight away, and worked on it by herself. All the characters are as per our family, except she has the blonde hair and her baby brother has the brown. The only change we would have liked is to make the cat black, like ours.

DD (4) really enjoyed making the card, although needed a lot of assistance in creating it. I had to do all the inputting whilst she chose the colours. I imagine it might be a bit tricky - took me a few moments to realise that clicking on the different parts of the body allowed you to change them.

Two improvements suggested - an option for grey hair for daddy Smile and an option to change the colour of the dog. She was a bit disappointed he couldn't be the right colour!

Also it be better if the coding screen was not in front of the characters.

We had fun though - DH will be impressed.

DD age 4, found it easy. Although when I went to enter her details on the competion page, there's no submission button (using iPhone).
