Get everything to hand, and make sure there's plenty of space. Privacy is also essential (except for someone to remove the offending item as soon as it's off), but, when the nappy's off, you'll get that automatically!

Wipes warmer was the best thing I bought for dd2. No freezing cold wipes in middle of night for all those changes. She slept through most of the nappy changes in the first few weeks because of this!

muppet150 · 29/05/2015 08:26

Have everything on hand. Pull baby wipes out before you start changing, open nappy up ready and make sure the lids are off any cream/barrier you use. If your changing a boy, learn to swap nappies like a ninja otherwise it could end up a full clothes change and a bath!

cazzzie987 · 29/05/2015 08:32

Have wipes ready and not just for your baby, just in case you get sprayed.

This can be quite scary if you are a new mom, often my little one would scream her head off, so I would advise to new moms, trust your gut and do not allow fear or anxiety to take over, staying calm and confident is key, keep eye contact with baby and practise a reassuring voice, kissing and stroking can also calm baby, and actually my advice is for difficult changes, changing time can also be happy and fun, enjoy ! x

To make sure everything is at hand, and do it on your knee, hard at first but easy once you have practiced a few times, and it saves you back

kungfupidge · 29/05/2015 09:13

when i'm changing a nappy especially when there at that wriggly stage i always have a toy in my changing bag failing that i give them a clean nappy to hold or a closed tub of nappy cream the key is to keep them occupied before you change the bottom lol !!

TheHelpfulHiker · 29/05/2015 09:15

Get everything ready first. Make sure the new nappy is ready to go, this is especially important when you have a little boy who wees as soon as his nappy is off-and on this note-make sure his willy is always pointing down. Little boys have a surprising range for such small people!

Stoodles · 29/05/2015 09:20

When you get grandparents to look after baby, write FRONT on the nappy front in big letters with a felt pen

Cocoandbatman · 29/05/2015 09:40

I like to use a 'guest towel' from ikea to place on the changing mat. It is about one and a half times the size of a flannel so fits most of a baby from the head to the bottom. They are only 20p so stock up. The plastic change mats get really cold and I hated seeing my little ones squeak when I put them straight down so this means they don't get the plastic cold shock on their head and bottom. It also means that if a wee or some poop unexpectedly escapes, it can easily and quickly be mopped up. They are also really useful to pop one in your bag to carry around, if you don't have space for a travel mat or again want to avoid the nasty cold shock on them. Well worth the money!

Teach your toddler to stand up for nappy changes. Soooo useful, as you can then change nappies anywhere.

Your keys are invaluable! (But not when you're within range of your car Confused)

Another vote for metanium here - the only thing that cleared up my DDs nappy rash, Works wonders on bites and stings too - it's my cure-all cream!

I always had one special toy I would give to DD at nappy time to keep her distracted.

sweetsomethings · 29/05/2015 10:15

I used to give them a little toy to hold to keep them amused.

izbiz88 · 29/05/2015 10:35

My youngest is a wriggler so I always try to distract her while I'm changing her nappy...talking to her, singing her favourite songs etc always seems to help :-)

slithytove · 29/05/2015 10:43
  1. Use forbidden items for distraction, like keys or mobile.
  2. Before removing nappy, always check the back for leakage.
  3. Put new nappy under old nappy.
  4. Have a wipe ready for little boy waterfalls.
  5. For enthusiastic toddlers, put the nappy on back to front so they can't undo it.
  6. For very leaky wees, especially at night, use two nappies, and cut a slit in the padding of the inner nappy.
  7. Learn very quickly to change a baby in the boot of a car/a buggy/ on your knee.
  8. Use a scented nappy bag over your nose (not mouth AND nose) to avoid breathing in poo smells. Try to avoid toddler seeing this and repeating it.
  9. Don't hesitate to pin a wriggly child down with your knees if necessary. Whatever gets the job done.
10. Sometimes, you just need to throw them in the bath.
shaunying · 29/05/2015 11:06

Get everything ready in advance, then employ distraction!
Sing songs or give the baby something to hold/play with whilst you change them - hopefully this stops them from trying to flip over and get away just as you're wiping their bottoms.

happysouls · 29/05/2015 11:19

I had the usual changing bag with a mat which was great while out and about, but at home I had a changing table. It was second hand so really cheap but a really really appreciated item, so easy on the back to be standing upright and have everything in the shelves underneath in easy reach! Also having the shelves meant I had space to stock up on changing items when they were on offer!

lhlee62 · 29/05/2015 11:32

Reusable wipes are brilliant, I find that disposable wipes can smear the poo whereas reusable ones clean up much better. I would recommend a toy for them to hold as my daughter has a habit of reaching down and touching poo if she isn't distracted!!

jodiecrossley1 · 29/05/2015 11:42

Make sure you have everything to hand before you start, particularly lots of wet wipes and have patience!

angela25rose · 29/05/2015 12:09

Singing and talking to them and when they are a bit older a wee toy helps to distract ??

OinkBalloon · 29/05/2015 12:14

Ignore people who tell you to change them on the floor so they can't fall off - change them on a table so they can't run away!

HaPPy8 · 29/05/2015 12:25

If they have a sibling enlist the help of that sibling from early on --- passing the cotton wool to you or the wipes or helping distract the baby. Its lovely for bonding and helps the older one not feel left out.

dorsetsgem · 29/05/2015 13:26

get everything ready before you start. bag open ready, few wipes pulled out , and nappy opened up. put a towel or something similar underneath as the cold can make little ones wee (well my boys all did it) :)

Ethan260908 · 29/05/2015 13:42

In 6 months time you will be changing nappies, without looking, so relax from the beginning, oh and if changing a boy, lift the old nappy up but still leave some coverage for the inevitable wee that will soak you if you take the old nappy completely away.

Maclairey · 29/05/2015 13:45

With my newborn I pop a wipe over his willy so I don't get a shower whilst changing his bum.

With my toddler I give him something to distract him so he doesn't put his hands all over his dirty bum.

Having two in nappies is hard. I feel like all I do is change nappies some days!
