11 years old and hated being teased about my glasses. Contact lenses could not come soon enough.

finleypop · 03/12/2014 12:00

I am just about to get my first pair of glasses & I feel a little nervous. However, my son got his first pair of glasses when he was 6 & never took them off again, he loves them, so that makes me feel better

21Catherine21 · 03/12/2014 12:35

When I was getting my first pair I thought about which people I knew or had seen with glasses and whether i liked their look!

aless02 · 03/12/2014 13:49

I DON'T WEAR GLASSES BUT HUSBAND IS AN OPTICIAN SO MY TIP WOULD BE TO VISIT HIM! HAHA ;)

mynellie · 03/12/2014 14:09

i was suffering with terrible migraines so i went to get my eyes checked and not only did i need glasses bifocals but also i was diagnosed with light sensitivity so have a tint on them too so when you see someone with what looks like sunglasses in weather that doesn't need them it's probably someone like me even the slightest sunshine sets it off and puts me in a dark room for hours
The first time i wore them i was very concious of them especially the tint but now i forget they are there and would definately not be able to see without them i just wish they were alot cheaper as it costs a fortune to buy glasses even the cheaper ones once the lens are put in and the tints applied

I noticed I couldn't read the road signs as easily as I once could so got them checked. The eye exam was fine and I unsurprisingly needed glasses. I found the choices of frames and pricing confusing the first time I picked my glasses and feel I paid too much and didn't trust my gut on their appearance. Next time I picked better and chose from the men's section and they suited me much better, a lot of glasses are actually gender neutral and you should think carefully about what suits your face then the designer name or section if the store they're in. lesson learned.

MerryMarigold · 03/12/2014 14:57

I don't remember the first time. I was a kid. I remember I used to pull my eyes at the sides, so I could see the blackboard! So I didn't have to do that anymore! I hated my glasses and got teased. I remember the optician who used to test my eyes was really creepy. I used to call him Uriah Heep. He had that vibe - and bad breath. Went into contact lenses as soon as I could (around 17).

spayne89 · 03/12/2014 15:18

I got my eyes tested for the first time in years when I was 23 after suffering from severe headaches. I didn't think I needed glasses but was advised to go anyway just to check. After the eye test I was given a prescription and told to choose some glasses. This took me forever - I must have tried all the glasses in the shop! When I went back a week later to collect them I really couldnt believe the difference everything was so much clearer! 2 years later and I still love my glasses its like the world is a little bit brighter :)

I got my first glasses when I was ten. They were those awful, clear plastic NHS frames (marginally better than the blue or pink) and I was embarrassed to wear them. I found it dizzying to walk up/down stairs as I wasn't sure when my foot would hit the step.

On the plus side, I could see! I walked home from school reading signs I had never noticed before, despite living in the city all my life.

I love my glasses now (black plastic frames) and prefer them to contacts. I used to wear contacts occassionally, but when my ds got diagnosed as needing glasses at age 4, I started wearing glasses every day out of solidarity. He had cute Mr Men frames, and has never complained about wearing glasses. Frames for children are so cool now!

For a first-time, glasses wearer, I'd say stay on flat surfaces - avoid stairs and down escalators!

becks213 · 03/12/2014 16:40

I remember when I first needed glasses, so I could read the whiteboard in secondary school, there was still a bit of a 'stigma' about wearing glasses when I was at school, so avoided wearing them so I wasn't laughed at, which probably made my eyes worse! I love wearing my glasses now and if my daughter needs to wear them I don't think they'll be so much fuss anymore!

devito92 · 03/12/2014 17:29

I took my so to Specsavers as he needs to wear glasses all the time. They've made him feel cool about wearing glasses which is priceless

oldsilver · 03/12/2014 18:08

I remember it as though it was yesterday. I was 4 (44 years ago), I came out the opticians and there was a tree, for the first time in my life I. Saw. Leaves. Shock

I was teased mercilessly not at least because I had blue curly ears NHS specs and later moved to pink ones...right through to age 16 - whilst they were free the parents were certainly not going to pay.

I never lost a pair and I've never broken any glares at fellow pupils . I was told to keep them on and to be honest, didn't want to take them off because I. Could. See!

Now I have varifocal, and apparently I won't have to pay for my next prescription as they will be so strong.

I work with children and am constantly amazed by all the choice they have with specs - and not a curly eared pink NHS spec among them.

Marg2k8 · 03/12/2014 18:35

I wear glasses for reading. I cannot recollect how I thought when I got my first pair.

puczinix · 03/12/2014 19:00

I've worn glasses since I was a child and I remember hating them through my teenage years but as I grew up I realised that as long as glasses are suitable for your face shape, they could make you look and feel better rather than worse.

Ludoole · 03/12/2014 19:06

My mum suspected my brother needed glasses so made an appointment for us both. I was 11 and thought my vision was great.
Turned out that db had great eyesight but i needed glasses..

I never knew i had a problem. Although walking down the street in that first pair of glasses i was amazed at how much i had been unable to see!

27 years later i wear my glasses all the time as the world is far too blurry without them.

brocher · 03/12/2014 19:21

Hardest part is choosing glasses - I'd just gone through the eyetest, then when asked to pick a set of frames, I couldn't see properly just a blur! Better to have someone with you for this stage!

HearMyRoar · 03/12/2014 19:47

I had my first pair of glasses when I was about 6. They were pink with my little pony on. I loved them. I was the sort of child who liked to be different so I always saw them as something special I got to wear they other children didn't.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/12/2014 19:49

That's one benefit of contact lenses (amongst the dozens of them!) - far easier choosing glasses frames.

I agree, we are so much better off in terms of choices and options for glasses nowadays, especially for children, but I still cannot bear wearing them for any length of time.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 03/12/2014 20:02

The first time I put on new glasses was definitely a 'wow' moment, as I realised that I had been going around trying to force my eyes to focus where they no longer could, and I could feel the tension melt away.
Driving became so much easier and I no longer felt pain of bright lights, or the worry of not being able to read road signs in time.

One thing that really stands out was when Dad drove me along a road I used to walk along as a child. There is a huge tree there at a junction which I often imagine drawing or painting when I go past it. I remember seeing it with my glasses and it was as though I were a child again, as every leaf was clearly defined, and the amount of detail I could pick out was breathtaking. The last time we had visited, my husband was driving and I could remember the tree being a bit of a blur, and making a mental note to get my eyes tested.

melvis · 03/12/2014 20:29

I got glasses for the first time this year, in my early 30's. I've probably needed them for years but "managed" without them. I still don't think I suit them but it's nice to be able to see properly! x

VictoriaSt · 03/12/2014 20:32

I was 10 when I got my first glasses and it was an amazing revelation! I just assumed that everyone saw life blurry! I found it difficult to see the blackboard before I got glasses so was starting to find school difficult (I started getting into trouble for copying when in reality I was just seeing what others were copying from the board I couldn't see!). Although I was happy that I could see well, I was also self concious about my glasses so would only put them on when I reeeally needed to. As I got older I began to like wearing glasses and now my face feels naked without them XD

pepicola3 · 03/12/2014 21:16

I don't wear glasses

SouthernOne · 03/12/2014 21:30

I got my first pair of glasses aged 15, 36 years ago:0

I remember they cost £55.00 which was a lot of money for my dad back then

I felt like I was walking uphill on the way home and spent the bus ride lifting them on and off to work out what I could/couldn't see.

clarejw24 · 03/12/2014 21:55

I remember wearing glasses as a teenager and one lesson got them out of my bag and they were completely smashed! It kept my best friend chuckling for months to come.
