The team at Specsavers would love to hear your story of when you first put on a pair of glasses and realised what you were missing - did you have that "wow" moment? How life changing it is to have your vision corrected for the first time? They'd also love to hear your tips for other people on wearing specs for the first time - whether they are for a long or short sighted prescription.

Specsavers say "when you choose Specsavers Opticians you are in safe hands - as shown by a YouGov 2014 survey*, Specsavers has been voted the most trusted optician in the UK. We always completely follow the guidelines set out by the General Optical Council - this means that all our glasses are professionally fitted under the supervision of a qualified optician. Every pair of glasses is individually made to meet your vision requirements and lifestyle needs - your dispenser will check that your new glasses fit properly and that you have clear, comfortable vision, making any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit – making getting that first pair a easy!"

Share your thoughts and everyone who does will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 voucher from here

Please note Specsavers may use your comments - anon of course - on their pages on MN, on their social media or possibly elsewhere - please only post if you're happy with this.

Thanks and good luck

Kept putting off wearing glasses for reading as made me feel old, but couldn't believe how bold that writing was and could even read the small print again! My advice for someone that needs to wear glasses as age is catching up with them is not to put it off like I did!

I started to use glasses this year, my eyesight had been affected after years of staring at my smart phone screen. The first time I put them on I felt a little weird/dizzy but that soon passed and I can see clearly. My advice is to try on a few frames and make sure they are fitted to your face comfortably. At Specsavers they were happy to adjust and readjust my frames until I was happy with them. Sometimes I actually forget I'm wearing my glasses.

I got reading glasses from Specsvers just over 2 years ago. Reading has become somuch more of a pleasure now. I have to say that in the first week I did have a few probems, as I kept leaving them on when I wasn't reading, on one occasion resulting in me walking into the door

VickyRsuperstar · 14/12/2014 13:23

A few years ago I went to the opticians & they said that I needed a very mild correction for distance. I had some bad advice choosing from a small range. I got some glasses that didn't suit me at all and I really hated them so much and felt so silly that I've never worn them since. I'm sure I can't be the only one that has done this and yep I know, I should have gone to Specsavers!

SLINKYDREAMER · 14/12/2014 15:21

I got my first pair this year and what a difference it has made to my sight - I can read with ease again and I can see presentations and the TV much more clearly instead of trying to squint and strain. I'm so glad I have glasses!

When I got my glasses aged 10 in 1990, it was considered very uncool to wear them. I realised that I needed them, because I had trouble seeing the writing on the blackboard at school. I chose some Lacoste ones, which were ok, but I wasn't happy, and tried to put them away as much as I could. I was never bullied, thank goodness, and started to slowly wear them more and more. Within the first year I had moved onto wearing them all the time, as I was happy to be able to see better and couldn't be bothered to look for them all the time when I needed them. Now I don't even realise I am wearing them, and prefer my face with my glasses on. they really compliment my look and I am very happy to see glasses becoming "hip" these days. My next frames are going to be classic heavy tortoiseshell ones. I love the geek architect look.

I've always liked wearing glasses, they give me the sexy nerd look. I'd be blind without them so good job I like them really!

Had my eye's tested last year to prove to my partner that I did not need glasses. However, turned out I did and had to go home with my tail between my legs lol.

It took me ages to find a pair of glasses. I was in a huff and could not find any that suited me :(.

I do wear my glasses and found my headaches are no longer a daily occurrence. I must also admit, I do look pretty good in a pair of glasses.

redstararnie76 · 14/12/2014 18:34

I was 13 before I had an eye test so no-one had picked up on how short-sighted I was, and I didn't realise as I didn't know any different.
I remember taking my glasses to school but not wanting to wear them, then surreptitiously slipping them on during science when I couldn't read the whiteboard (as usual), and being absolutely shocked at how well I could suddenly see it. It suddenly dawned on me that this was what everyone else saw - needless to say, I wore them pretty much continuously from then on, only switching them when I started wearing contacts, however I still wear them regularly.

wooohooo · 14/12/2014 20:10

I had mine at 12,my son had them at 3,I we both wear lenses now as I hated being out In the rain and you cant see anything
I also hated when you open the oven your glasses steamed up

Annbunce · 14/12/2014 21:10

Had to get glasses when I was about 11. Not many kids had glasses when I got mine, and they were nowhere near as stylish as they are now, you could only pick from a few frames. Lots more choice for kids nowadays :)

krnries · 14/12/2014 21:39

I've only recently started wearing glasses for reading, and the prescription is so slight I often wear them when I'm wandering around :)

fRaahhnkincense · 14/12/2014 23:33

I got my first pair aged 11- having spent over a year sitting at the front of the class, squinting at the blackboard. They were NHS pink ones - 32 years later, my mum still has them. They have gone a bit yellow.

My first pair of glasses were a revelation- being abole to see things clearly wa amazing. My sister was very jealous- she wanted glasses (and suited them more than I have eveer done)- over 30 years later, she still doesn't really need them.

I regularly bought glasses from the specsavers Isis range- really good prices. Never had a problem with them.

fRaahhnkincense · 14/12/2014 23:34

really need a new pair though- had these 3 years, and my eyesight has changed and they are rather scratched Grin

Minnie43 · 14/12/2014 23:42

I felt very self-conscious and thought everyone would be looking at me, when in fact they didn't pay any attention. I'm short sighted and wearing glasses changed my outlook. For the first time I could see clearly and everything was in focus.

Thanks for all the comments.
Am pleased to say SouthernOne has won the £250 voucher - well done!

I got my first pair of glasses at 27! Only need them for driving and watching tv...I still can't believe how clear things are with glasses on! It was like my life had turned HD haha I like wearing them as mine look like glasses that people wear as fashion accessories that aren't needed :)

soozieee · 04/01/2015 22:13

I was 21 when I was told I should have a glaucoma test because my grandmother had been diagnosed with it. The optician asked me how I had got to the opticians and gave me a good telling off for crossing the road with my baby when my eyesight was so bad. I didn't even realise I needed glasses and would not have had the test if it hadn't been for my grandmas glaucoma.

Got my first glasses when I was 11, picked out lovely flowery frames and was more excited about those than finally being able to see! I think for first glasses definitely be as permissive as possible for the frames - loving them really encouraged me to wear them!
