Most of us make an effort to plan our shop and minimise food waste, but even with the best will in the world, all too often we end up with items left over - and the people from the Unilever Project Sunlight would like to know which are your repeat waste offenders. Is there a fruit that always gathers mould at the bottom of the bowl? Or what about the last spoonful of pasta sauce that you swore you'd use up? Are you afflicted by unconsumed anchovies? Stressed out by surplus celery?

Please share what - despite your best efforts - you find yourself regularly binning on kitchen clean out day. And just to even things up a bit, why not let us know which foods you'd rate as your enduring heroes: the ones that could sit happily on your shelves and emerge perfectly edible even in the event of a nuclear apocalypse ...

Add your comment to the thread and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a a £250 voucher for the store of their choice.

thanks and good luck

pazanne · 03/11/2014 09:32

buzzybev · 03/11/2014 09:39

pauline51 · 03/11/2014 09:46

ALWAYS A LETTUCE

Roraima · 03/11/2014 09:47

For some reason I always forget I bought some "fresh but fresh no more" ginger!

roggy45 · 03/11/2014 09:50

coleslaw, a must have on baked potatoes but never eaten up afterwards.

sarahann1984 · 03/11/2014 09:57

Last week it was half a cucumber and a coconut flavoured yoghurt

funkyfish586 · 03/11/2014 09:58

Things that never get eaten up in my fridge

  • Hummous ( always half eaten)
  • Bananas
  • Salad bags that have turned brown & gloopy
ergomaniac1967 · 03/11/2014 10:27

Lately it has been packets of salad. Once opened they only seem to last a day before a horrible green pool starts to accumulate in the bottom of the bag. Oh, and brocolli head that decides to start turning yellow!

badgermum · 03/11/2014 10:32

Half used pots of natural yoghurt, coleslaw or potato salad can normally be found lingering

somersetsinger · 03/11/2014 10:32

Cabbage - I am currently trying to use up the following brassicas from my veg box:

Red cabbage
White cabbage
Chinese cabbage
Brussels sprouts
2 bags of kale

All meals this week must include cabbage!

Drania · 03/11/2014 10:34

Leeks, cucumber and celery all end up in a manky pile at the back of the veg drawer. One day I'll learn not to buy so much!

KittyKat88 · 03/11/2014 10:38

Usually it's jars of sauces (like Pesto or mustard) that you only use a little of at a time and not very regularly. Sometimes yoghurts get pushed to the back too. We try our best not to waste food, but inevitably it happens!

rutsan · 03/11/2014 10:40

Peppers, and lettuce, I buy them every week with good intensions, but never use them.

gamerwidow · 03/11/2014 10:40

We always end up with left over half used salad bags. I'm otherwise quite good at only buying what we need.

claire11d · 03/11/2014 10:45

Carrots, always buy a bag with the intention of giving them to DS chopped up for snacks and then always resort to crisps or babybel! Naughty mummy maybe with £250 I could buy one of those chopping machines!

pennwood · 03/11/2014 10:48

I am usually very good at looking in the fridge to menu according to what is in there, but sometimes that iceberg lettuce just manages to escape being used up before it starts to turn brown.

bubbleybooboo · 03/11/2014 11:02

lettuce!! i buy it every week and hardly use it lately as i never want any in the colder months.

lorna1104 · 03/11/2014 11:12

what would be at the back of my fridge is normally
spring onions
creme fresh
loose fruit and veg

lilmiztam22 · 03/11/2014 11:25

Half opened tins, spring onions, grapes, yogurts

tia3456 · 03/11/2014 11:49

I try to use everything up but usually it will be a vegetable I have forgotten about in the salad box

sarcod · 03/11/2014 11:51

half a cucumber or for some reason someone always leaves one slice of ham

lizd31 · 03/11/2014 11:53

I'm quite good, I rarely let anything go to waste as I'm vegetarian so use all my veggies although some of my mushrooms tend to go a bit mushy & have to be thrown away

suewho · 03/11/2014 12:04

lettuce.........and all sorts of bits I keep to use up in soups and casseroles that I don't get round to making

OiGiveItBack · 03/11/2014 12:05

Cream cake, chocolate and champagne. I'm always having to chuck that kind of stuff out. that's my story and I'm sticking to it
