Aldi are gearing up for Christmas with loads of bargains on their website - they'd love Mumsnetters to check out what's on offer then come back to this thread and give their feedback. Please visit the website here.

Are you an Aldi shopper already? If so, are you planning to do your full Xmas shop there, or will you pick up specific bits and pieces from there? What's the best bargain you've ever picked up from Aldi?

If you've never shopped at Aldi before, why? Is there anything on the website that has convinced you to give it a go?

Also, Aldi would love to hear your top tips on how to bag a Christmas bargain, or any other genius money-saving tips you have, so please do share here.

Everyone who posts their comments on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 voucher to spend in store.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

I shop at Aldi every week for my main food shop. I switched from Tesco about 5 years ago when money was tight and even though we are comfortable again now I still shop there.

I love their Christmas range, we have egg and cows milk protein allergies to work around and Aldi is one of the only affordable places that does dark chocolate christmas bits that children will like. We already have hidden away their dark choc reindeer and santas hidden away.

Last year for Christmas day we had a frozen pork joint, it was lovely and only about £5. I cooked it in the slow cooker and it was perfect, can't fault it.

Love the Gluhwein too, we come back to it after a cold night out late night shopping and looking at all the Christmas lights.

Again this year we'll get everything for Christmas from Aldi (except some allergy friendly bits from the health shop) because the veg is great, the meat great value and quality and the extras like pigs blankets are well priced and I don't think they are any different in quality to Tesco/Asda.

Best bargain in Aldi? Not one thing but 3 years of buying the nappies - great value and excellent performing nappies. They have saved me a fortune over the years!

princesssugar · 08/11/2012 17:32

I love Aldi but find that i need top ups from other shops as there are specific things i use. I love the fruit and veg offers, the weekly offers and the vanilla brioche thingy ( but cant buy that often as can eat a whole one in an afternoon!)Blush i also think the nappies are brill especially for my skinny but long newborn huggies and pampers just dont compare. I am lucky that i ont cater for chrismas ( go to parents) but i am planning a four bird roast for new year and will be getting treat stuff (stollen, cream liquer, panetone, mince pies etc)

DazR · 08/11/2012 17:54

I have also never shopped in Aldi. Nearest one is a 25 min drive. I am tempted to see what they have in store. I think the plate warmer looks good - always a problem here to heat the plates when all the ovens and warming drawer are full of food! I think someone said they do running gear but couldn't see any on the website.

mrscumberbatch · 08/11/2012 18:01

I don't have an Aldi nearby :(

I do make a visit to the one near my mums at Xmas time though to stock up on sweet treats, Stollen, Deli meats etc.

I quite like going as I never know what I'm going to come out with! Needless to say, I go in with a firm budget in mind and then overspend anyway!

Sorry, this thread title reads 'talk to Aldi about shopping for Christ' on the mobile phone app Smile

BlastOff · 08/11/2012 18:54

I don't shop at Aldi (it's not in a convenient position) but I keep meaning to pop in and buy some nappies after testing them via mumsnet because they were fantastic. I'm not planning to do my Xmas shop there, but might pop in having seen this and see what they have in terms of nibbles, prosecco, wine, cheese and cold meats.

We do secret santa amongst the adults in our family; we save a lot of money and not given a whole load of tat to boot!

CheeryCherry · 08/11/2012 18:56

I rarely shop at aldi, just because I can't do all my shopping there, and my time is so precious but I do love getting the bargains that are always in store. I like the website, it is easy to navigate, and some of the offers on food gifts look good.
The obvious top tips are the BOGOFS and the three-for-two offers, and to always snap up something if you think its the perfect gift for someone. It's usually gone if you go back a few weeks later! I also always keep a Christmas book with a list every year of the presents I buy. That way I don't give a similar present year after year. It's quite fun reading back a few years, reading who I bought Boyzone calenders for...!

TheHappyCamper · 08/11/2012 18:59

Our nearest Aldi is a 30 minute drive away and I've only been once. I'd seen some good offers on fruit so popped in but they didn't have any left of any of the things I wanted, so I've never been back.

We regularly shop at Lidl (5 minute walk) and Sainsburys (opposite my work) but perhaps I will give Aldi another try. It gets mentioned on here a lot!

From that link I thought the Baileys stuff at £5.99 is very reasonable. I also liked the look of the xmas puddings and mince pies.

bluebump · 08/11/2012 19:04

I shop in Aldi as and when I am in the next town as there is not one where I live. I like the face creams and the alcohol Grin. My sister lives just down the road from one and I always ask to go in when I visit!

The Christmas range looks good, none of my family eat meat but the puddings look nice. I usually buy those chocolate reindeers as they are good little gifts and are nice chocolate.

I do my weekly shop in Morrisons and tend to get their savers stamps each week to put towards a big shop around Christmas time. This year i've saved up loads of Tesco vouchers too to double up, it helped I took out my life insurance with Tesco too so when doubled up I now have £100 to spend in store which i'll get presents with which will be so helpful as I don't earn much.

alreadytaken · 08/11/2012 19:22

no aldi nearby but when I pass one I will go in and buy a few things. I like the vegetable offers, the sherry trifle, olives, pate, marshmallows. I'm tempted by the 4 bird roast - although probably for boxing day not Christmas Day - but would prefer it without stuffing.

fishandlilacs · 08/11/2012 19:30

I love Aldi to bits, we shop there every week. I think the food is fabulous quality at a decent price. I love that fact that despite being on a tight budget we can treat ourselves to nice things by shopping there.

We love what we call the "mystery aisle" of goods that you would never expect. I bought some tea towels and some baby socks recently and they are great.

Aldi disposable nappies are quite simply the best on the market, I prefer them to the big named brands such as huggies or pampers.

My only criticism is if I need bread flour or tinned pulses such as butter beans or lentils I have to go elsewhere which irritates me because I would dearly love to go to Aldi's and no where else.

BerthaTheBogBurglar · 08/11/2012 19:36

I shop in Aldi most weeks. I get everything I can there (trolley-full, £50), and then go next door to Sainsburys for the rest (half-full basket, £15!).

I have a small list of things we don't like from Aldi, but most stuff is good and some things are fab. Especially the chocolate ...

snowmummy · 08/11/2012 19:47

I do most of my shopping at Aldi and have done so for the last couple of years. I love the place - I have never managed to spend more than £100 in one go and that's with a trolley full of food for a family of five and including nappies, cleaning products and toiletries.

I will do my full shop at Aldi but may have to pop to another supermarket for some specific items.

The best bargain from Aldi is a really difficult one as there have been so many - camping gear, skiing gear, biking gear, kids' books ...

Best money saving tip - use up all the veggies in your fridge at the end of a week by making soup or curry.

turnipvontrapp · 08/11/2012 20:06

I shop at Aldi and love it. Its so quick to shop there, sells most things we need at half the price of Tesco.

The only thing I don't like is the raw chicken, always smells off, no idea why when it's still in date.

missorinoco · 08/11/2012 20:14

I've never shopped at Aldi, mainly because I haven't thought about it. I checked the store locator, and there are stores within 20 minutes of me.

I will have a look now. Some of the Xmas treats. e.g. chocolate coins, look very good value. I would be reluctant to swap to a full Xmas shop there without knowing the quality, so may have a look in the next few weeks and decide from there.

My Xmas bargain tips. Buy early, you can pick up sales. Bulk buy where available. And as said, it is only a few days, I try to remind myself of this before buying more chocolate/cake/biscuits than i will ever eat.

Firawla · 08/11/2012 20:20

Are you an Aldi shopper already? If so, are you planning to do your full Xmas shop there, or will you pick up specific bits and pieces from there? What's the best bargain you've ever picked up from Aldi?

no we are mainly tesco as it has a bigger range than aldi and has halal meat in our local ones, but we go into aldi or lidl now and again just to see what we can get for good value. i find it hard to do the full shop as the shops are too small near me (london area) but my family up north do full shops there

If you've never shopped at Aldi before, why? Is there anything on the website that has convinced you to give it a go?

i have but as i said cos the shops are a bit small thats why i dont more, also its harder to get to once ive got my driving license i probably will pop in more to have a look, and i would do that to check out the 'special buys' that come in as they tend to be good bargains. also fruit and veg cheaper than elsewhere

Also, Aldi would love to hear your top tips on how to bag a Christmas bargain, or any other genius money-saving tips you have, so please do share here.

i just keep my eye out online, mse, hot uk deals, facebook & on here - and see when good offers are mentioned, use discount vouchers, also do a lot of competitions as there is no better bargain than actually winning something for free

knowitallstrikesagain · 08/11/2012 20:37

I regularly shop at Aldi as, even though it is miles away, the savings make it worth the petrol money. The products are often not as cheap as the value ranges in the big supermarkets but the standard is far higher and what you buy lasts a lot longer. Particularly impressed by the freshness of the fruit and veg and love the cheese.

I don't host Christmas but will be buying most food for the festive season from Aldi, love the look of the chocolate bombe!

Over the years I have had loads of random bargains from toys to clothes, lots of socks and even an easel which was comparative in quality with toys r us etc but a quarter of the price!

NotShortImFunSized · 08/11/2012 20:43

I've never been to Aldi before, mainly because I didn't think there was one anywhere near me. Today though I was talking to a friend and she was telling me there is one about 20 minutes drive away!

I think they have some fab bargains on there. Especially the treats, the Victoria biscuits tin, Foxes favourites and choccie santas/reindeer would get me to give it a go and shop there Grin

The only christmas tip I have is start buying in the January sales! Spread the cost picking up little bits here and there throughout the year. It takes off SO much pressure and hassle you otherwise get this time of year. It's taken me 11 years to work this out Grin

SunshinePanda · 08/11/2012 20:48

Considering trying the turkey crown usually buy a fresh turkey crown from M&S but it is expensive. Has anyone tried the Aldi one?

nextphase · 08/11/2012 20:50

I very occasionally pop into Aldi. But only when I'm in a strange town, and thats the closest supermarket. I've always been very disappointed in the fruit quality (usually what I try to buy when away from home). On that basis, I probably wouldn't go there for a full christmas shop, as I don't have any faith in the quality.
The local stores to me are quite small, will they have everything on the www?

From what I've seen, if you went regularly you could find some real bargins, but as a one off, its hard shopping.

economymode · 08/11/2012 21:17

I've switched to doing my big shop at Aldi since giving up work to stay at home with my son. I save around £25/week, compared to Coop.

We're going to family for Christmas, so no need to do a big shop. But, if we did, I definitely wouldn't buy meat from there. As much as I love cheap prices, Aldi aren't great on animal welfare (I know they do free range chicken, but think that's it). I rarely buy meat anyway, but as a rule, if I do, it doesn't come from Aldi. So if I were to cook a turkey for the meat-eaters, I'd buy it elsewhere. Having said that, I am impressed that they do free-range eggs and always stock up on the big packs (15 for £2.19)

I'd def buy the veg and any ingredients sweet bits there, though.

I bake a lot and buy nearly all of my supplies at Aldi - great range of flours and pretty much all you need for baking. Especially the above-mentioned, free-range eggs.

It's great for kids' stuff, too - nappies, the odd toy or book, baby wipes, baby bath and lotion; all so much cheaper than places like Boots. I bought a few xmas presents there last year and am tempted by a few things this year.

SomeBear · 08/11/2012 21:22

We are regular shoppers at Aldi, and for the last 6 weeks have done our full grocery shops there. I'm a huge fan of the basics - fruit and vegetables seems to last a lot longer than Asda or Sainsbury's (the two alternative supermarkets around here) and haven't yet had a dud meal. We're getting on well with their own branded condiments and no one has noticed the changed mayonnaise, ketchup etc. The non-food items are what originally attracted me to the store - the interlocking mats and fleece blankets are excellent for instance. I was also pleasantly surprised at how good customer services are when I had a problem with something I had bought.

This year it is just the five of us for Christmas so will be getting our meal from Aldi - I am tempted to splash out on the 5 bird roast, but otherwise will just get a chicken. I was looking at the puddings etc last week so will get them with each week's shopping leading up to December. The children loved all the chocolates from Aldi in their stocking last year - caramel mice and little bars of chocolate, from memory.

Money saving tip would be to take a list and not get swept along with the hysteria that seems to build up to Christmas eve.

plum100 · 08/11/2012 21:23

I have shopped at Aldi for over a year now - originally I went as we had moved and it was the closest supermarket. I found it to be brilliant as it was smaller than Asda I can get in and do my shop in under 45 mins. It has less choice than Asda but I find this to be a plus rather than negative - 1) you dont spend as much and 2) because there are less convenience foods I find i buy fresh ingredients and make much more home cooked food. I did go back to asda a few months ago thinking is aldi really as good value as i think and it really really is , and mu family said they actually preferred Aldi. We are a family of 5 so have to watch the pennies but I dont think i could ever justify going back to the main stores and paying so much more. We got all our xmas food at aldi last year and will again this year - the products are on par with leading brand they really are. Keep upi the good work Aldi we love you xx

Tortoise · 08/11/2012 21:49

I used to shop at Aldi but my easiest to get to store was replaced with farm foods! Now i can only get to a store if i can get a lift as i don't drive.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 08/11/2012 21:53

We converted to shopping weekly at Aldi a few months ago. The nappies are great, price and quality, very useful with a new baby in our house. We love things like prosecco, mozzarella, prosciutto, gluhwein, stollen...all the lovely continental goodies. I enjoy baking, especially at Xmas, and will stock up on the big tubs of cocoa powder, flour etc. I will be buying the chocolate reindeer for my eldest DS and my nephews. Belgian chocolates or truffles for our neighbours. We will stock up on wine too. We are happy with overall quality and the friendly/helpful staff as well. Only thing I haven't been keen on is the hummus.
