Aldi are gearing up for Christmas with loads of bargains on their website - they'd love Mumsnetters to check out what's on offer then come back to this thread and give their feedback. Please visit the website here.

Are you an Aldi shopper already? If so, are you planning to do your full Xmas shop there, or will you pick up specific bits and pieces from there? What's the best bargain you've ever picked up from Aldi?

If you've never shopped at Aldi before, why? Is there anything on the website that has convinced you to give it a go?

Also, Aldi would love to hear your top tips on how to bag a Christmas bargain, or any other genius money-saving tips you have, so please do share here.

Everyone who posts their comments on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 voucher to spend in store.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

we don't have aldi near us, but used to in our old flat. wish there was one here.

my current method for christmas bargains is to save nectar points over a year and then put them towards amazon vouchers for family presents.

and not eating turkey, as it is frighteningly expensive for something so tasteless.

PenguinSalute · 11/11/2012 14:07

My DP is determined to turn me into an Aldi convert, as he grew up in Germany and says it reminds him of home. I like it for some things, their packed lunch bits are great and much cheaper than other supermarkets, but our local one is fairly small so I wouldn't be confident of getting a full shop done there. One of my best bargains is definitely their gammon joint- half the price of other places, and perfect for slow cooker gammon in coke drool

Christmas time, I will be heading there for small treats and stocking fillers, and any food bargains in what I call the corridor of dreams (the aisle of utterly random products!) and topping up using the other supermarkets.

BoffinMum · 11/11/2012 17:30

LOL at Corridor of Dreams! GrinGrinGrin

MaxineQuordlepleen · 11/11/2012 18:42

I used to shop at Aldi til my local one got burned down in the riots... I'll shop anywhere really, as long as it has the types of stuff I want. On the whole would like to see more nice veggie stuff. I like the non food stock. The website wasn't very enticing; typeface, colours etc a bit over bright and cheap looking which is a shame.

In terms of bargains, I always google anything I want, just in case somewhere has it cheap or especially looking for discount codes. Also, get MSE email each week.

I LOVE Aldi (and am very excited that a new one is opening in Canterbury this week) - and my favourite hobby is to come home from a big shop at Aldi, open up the Tescos website and compare the prices of equivalent products, working out how much money I've saved I don't get out much.

MainlyMaynie · 11/11/2012 19:02

I really recommend Aldi prosecco, it's delicious and we normally buy much more expensive wines.

Violet77 · 11/11/2012 19:16

Aldi, dear aldi...i love aldi :-) i switched to aldi when i had my first child and now i get cross in Tesco, cross at the prices, cross at he rediculous choice, cross at the crappy marketing bogofs ( save 20p) annoyed at the dirty tricks ( 100g v's per item on unit costs) cross at how slow the checkout process is..god it's the efficency of Aldi i love.

My top tip is to shop with ikea bags, that way there is no need to repack. Aldi you should make these.

My niggles with you are lack of calpol, bigger trollys would be good. Also when you do price per 100g etc on chicken keep it consistent so i can compare. Fresh fish would be good. Lemon cordial in the range. Breadcrumbs please breadcrumbs. More pale ale.

Violet77 · 11/11/2012 19:18

Might i also suggest an iwould have bought today if you stocked it box or computer station. You will get a good view on where to extend your ranges.

QOD · 11/11/2012 20:12

I don't do my weekly shop as my dh and dd are unfortunately brand snobs .... but I buy special stuff, offers and odd bits and love it!

dontlaugh · 11/11/2012 20:26

I've just come from my local Aldi today and all the four bird roasts appear to have flown out the door. WAAAAAH.
That is all.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/11/2012 20:33

QOD, I put Aldi stuff in brand packaging when I first went there.

He never noticed so after a few months I told him. He now prefers Aldi!.

369thegoosedrankwine · 11/11/2012 20:51

Shop at Aldi every week.

Nappies are the best value nappies ever. I also buy (almost every week):

  • stackers crisps; breaded ham; bread; malt loaf; apple juice; frozen salmon.

Like the website it looks like the brochures in shop.

I will do lots of my Christmas shop at Aldi, but veg can still be a bit hitty missy if I am honest (sorry).

I thought my fireworks this year were a great bargain: £15 and they lasted about an hour.

Money saving tips: why pay £1 for something when you can get it for 59p (malt loaf fans here).

Yama · 11/11/2012 21:00

Are you an Aldi shopper already? Yes. It has taken a couple of years but I have finally converted my parents now too.

If so, are you planning to do your full Xmas shop there, or will you pick up specific bits and pieces from there? Most, if not full Christmas shop.

What's the best bargain you've ever picked up from Aldi? Face cream, the one with white cream and red gel. Love it, saves me £££.

Also, Aldi would love to hear your top tips on how to bag a Christmas bargain, or any other genius money-saving tips you have, so please do share here. We have been buying Christmas stuff like Stollen, chocolates, booze, soft drinks, crackers, etc a little each week to spread the cost.

If, I could request one thing it would be this - please put dairy in less of the 'Specially Selected' range. Dh is lactose intolerant and I'm missing out.

Yama · 11/11/2012 21:01

Please forgive the stray ,.

Livelongandprosper · 11/11/2012 21:30

Already an Aldi shopper here. Good quality and much cheaper than when I used to do my shop at sainsburys. We'll try the bird within a bird this year.

We take a list to shop from to keep spending low. The only criticism I have is the lack of vegetarian options.

garlicbaguette · 11/11/2012 23:08

Oh, Yama's just reminded me ... I'm dairy intolerant, too, and am very happy with the fact that most of the Village Bakery range is dairy-free. Lately, though, more of it seems to contain butter and/or milk derivatives. If this continues, I'll be as trammelled for choice as in the neighbouring Co-op. Butter is not an automatic selling point for many!

I agree the Specially Selected range is a tad dairy-heavy but, since the Stollen is free of milk products, am happy enough Wink My Aldi doesn't do soya yoghurts or desserts - do some of the larger stores?

Violet, your "I would have bought today ..." suggestion is genius!

BoffinMum · 12/11/2012 08:06

As Aldi is German the absence of fresh pretzels distresses me greatly! Grin

Lesbeadiva · 12/11/2012 08:14

I love aldi, but its a few miles from me. But we do a weekly shop there and just top up locally. We are going away for Christmas, but will be sending my parents in the direction of aldi for bargains for Christmas dinner!

Bargains I have found? I bought a lot of things in the jan sale, and various gifts in sales through the year, so Christmas shopping has been done since about August. If we had a bit extra one month, we would buy a present. It means we are not stretching ourselves into November and December. Which is just as well as my shower just broke and we have to find the money to fix it!

Caerlaverock · 12/11/2012 08:26

I love aldi, shop the every week. Fruit and veg are great as are the cooked meats (naice ham). Best bargains I have found are the running and cycling gear. All the Christmas chocolates and treats look great but I am reluctant to buy as I would feel cheap giving someone a box of truffles with the aldi logo in the side even though I know they are probably great.

NigellaPleaseComeDineWithMe · 12/11/2012 08:28

Tend to shop in all sorts of different supermarkets - don't agree that Lidl / Aldi only appeal to those on lower incomes and offer a less desirable shopping experience. Shopped at Lidl for a while and now have to go to a different part of town and have an hour or so to kill and a new Aldi was opened recently. Found Aldi very similar to Lidl - is there a German standard for the layout of supermarkets? Like the fact that the palces don't get regularly swapped about - the main products stay where they are. Middle sections are a real odd ball - bought an axe from there a few weeks ago - great for splitting winter logs for the fire! Tend not to buy meat from there but would be the deli type products which I think are better than just about all the other uK supermarkets.

Like to but the more authentic german xmas goods - after spending various work trips to Nuremburg know what they should be like.

Puds there are great too - the vanilla types are a fave of the DSs.

gazzalw · 12/11/2012 13:26

Suffice it to say that if I were lucky enough to win the Aldi voucher, I would make every effort to seek out Aldi for Christmas items - they look delicious and a bargain too...we have just been deliberating about ordering our Christmas 'bird' from M&S and then decided it was just too expensive really to justify.....

VirtuallyHere · 12/11/2012 20:15

The only Aldi I have been to was in Australia (Blue Mountains, Katoomba) and was definitely a lot cheaper. However in the UK we have several other supermarkets closer to us and if I was going to travel further then I would probably drive to Costco as we have a card.

RichTeaAreCrap · 12/11/2012 23:43

I do shop at Aldi, I tried it earlier this year and now there are a few things that I wont buy anywhere else. I haven't tried any of the Christmas food yet but will have a look at it this year.

Things I buy are:
Red wine (brilliant and as good as any other)
Beer
Mayonaise
Chocolate ( gorgeous)
Chicken
Cooked Meats
Cleaning products

It annoys me now to see the prices other shops charge for these items when I know how cheap it is in Aldi.

I looked at the website, I will be trying the mince pies and the chocolate reindeers and will look at what else is worth buying.

BoffinMum · 13/11/2012 08:22

Aldi jams are excellent, as is the Italian food (especially their gourmet posh range).
Miss the forest honey though, that was very dark and moreish.

I have noticed in the local Aldi that the other customers are more friendly, child tolerant and polite than Tesco, Sainsbury, and Waitrose, and the small store size makes shopping pretty quick and efficient. The streamlining of food product ranges means you can find what you need a lot quicker, as well. For example yogurt is basically kids - adult fruit - Greek - natural. Don't have 6 brands of each choose from and evaluate on basis of cost each time. Fantastic!

Gracelo · 13/11/2012 09:28

I'm not buying any Christmas food this year at all because we are going home for Christmas but I would normally stock up on olives and continental meats and things like that. dd would eat an entire pack of Aldi olives in under 5 min if I'd let her.
I love Aldi for all the random stuff. I found beremeal biscuits from the Shetlands there the other day.
