Mobility Allowance

I am looking into mobility allowance. Does anyone know, if you can get it, if your child has Autism?

Imitatingdory · 01/04/2022 19:40

Do you mean the mobility component of DLA? If so, yes some DC with ASD will be eligible.

Dontjudgeme101 · 01/04/2022 20:18

I mean for PiP

OP posts:
Imitatingdory · 01/04/2022 20:21

Yes, if they meet the criteria they can get the mobility component for PIP.

Bellyups · 01/04/2022 20:24

It really depends if they meet the criteria.

Shortbreadselection · 09/04/2022 14:29

My dd gets it - she can plan a journey and follow a route but needs encouragement to go out, support whilst travelling due to anxiety, assistance at stations to avoid crowds etc.

Dontjudgeme101 · 09/04/2022 15:47

Thank for your all your input.

OP posts:
fortifiedwithtea · 10/04/2022 07:52

Our dd does not have autism but she does have intellectual disabilities and severe mental health.

She gets PIP at the highest rate for care and mobility..

You need to show your child finds challenges getting about even if they are physically fit.

Statements like

My child gets overwhelmed in crowds.
My child would get easily lost or confused.
My child can not interpret a bus timetable
If lost my child would not be able to understand directions.
If lost my child would not know how to get help or struggle to communicate their problem.

Dontjudgeme101 · 10/04/2022 09:18

Thank you @fortifiedwithtea, for giving examples of what to say. The forms are overwhelming to fill out. I do struggle with the paperwork.

OP posts:
fortifiedwithtea · 11/04/2022 10:07

@Dontjudgeme101 you’re welcome. The first form is awful both in terms of length but also how sole destroying it is to write about your child in the worst light.

We have just had a review. The next form is easier because you can state unchanged in response to the questions. Was able to point out that her learning disability was present from birth and will be a life long condition. In fact her medical health is worse now as she has been diagnosed with more conditions since first applying for PIP. Comments from the person reviewing are that there will be a longer gap before the next review.

Punxsutawney · 11/04/2022 11:39

That's useful to know that you can state unchanged fortified. Ds was granted PIP last year but we have to renew again next year.
He is autistic with significant MH difficulties but doesn't have learning disabliity. He gets enhanced mobility as he can't leave our home or travel independently.
I'm not sure what the future holds for him but I don't think much will have changed by the time it comes to renew it.

Dontjudgeme101 · 12/04/2022 16:13

Thanks again @fortifiedwithtea, l will have to wait and see if we have been successful.

OP posts:
fortifiedwithtea · 13/04/2022 11:43

@Dontjudgeme101 good luck, tag me if you post the outcome

Dontjudgeme101 · 13/04/2022 12:08

I will @fortifiedwithtea. Only got 7 weeks to wait for the outcome.

My dd didn’t get mobility allowance and she has just been turned down for PIP too! Not a good day!

OP posts:
Dontjudgeme101 · 09/05/2022 19:28

@fortifiedwithtea l didn’t get mobility allowance and PIP claim was denied. Not a good day today. I will appeal. I will be happy, if l just get get PIP. I would try for mobility another time.

OP posts:
Imitatingdory · 09/05/2022 20:20

I’m sorry DD’s claim was denied. Was she awarded any points?

Did she have an assessment? If she did ask for the report.

Mobility is part of PIP. PIP has 2 components, the daily living component and the mobility component.

Dontjudgeme101 · 10/05/2022 07:00

@@Imitatingdory She wasn’t awarded any points. I just can’t believe it. She was awarded the highest for DLA and now nothing for PIP! I have seen the assessment.. There were things missing from the information and some things were wrongly stated. I am going to appeal. All the lines were down yesterday when l contacted the DWP. So l will have to try again today!

The benefits and work website is excellent. The member's guides are really clear and helpful when applying or appealing. www.benefitsandwork.co.uk

Dontjudgeme101 · 12/05/2022 06:32

Thank you @vjg13 so much for that website. I will have a look at it.

I was told that the criteria for PIP is completely different, which isn't quite true!

You have to do a mandatory reconsideration (MR) which means they look at it again. You need to request the report. I did and ended up writing all the contradictions and my evidence to back all this up. That was only 1.5 pages. I got my mum to write something as well.

I kept a diary and went from nothing to standard care and enhanced mobility.

You're better off doing the MR in writing.

AReallyUsefulEngine · 12/05/2022 14:08

Tigerrag DLA and PUP are different in how they are assessed to the extent that PIP is based on points for specific tasks whereas DLA isn’t.

fortifiedwithtea · 15/05/2022 12:01

@Dontjudgeme101 sorry to read your claim has been turned down. Good luck with your appeal 💐

Dontjudgeme101 · 15/05/2022 12:21

@fortifiedwithtea thank you so much. I will try and send some more information. Let’s wait and see.

OP posts:
Dontjudgeme101 · 21/06/2022 13:10

Yesterday l received a letter from DWP to say that my appeal wasn’t successful. I have to appeal to the Social Security and Child Support Tribunal. I really could do without this, but l am not giving in.

OP posts:
Guineapigmadness · 21/06/2022 20:43

@Dontjudgeme101 It was exactly the same for my dd, she only got 2 points which was for dyslexia yet she is autistic, has chronic fatigue syndrome and a multitude of other co-morbidities, on her PIP form we expressly said she couldn’t even get out of bed 60% of the time, but nothing.

They had also put on the return many incorrect statements such as she doesn’t take medication for anxiety (which she does and is clearly stated on her form)

I am writing a letter for the mandatory reconsideration because dd just can’t do it, but I don’t hold out much hope. At the moment the letter is three and a half pages long so maybe overkill.

Dd says the PIP assessment is an ableist process and made her feel as if they were trying to minimise her experience of her disabilities and chronic conditions, she is very down about it.

Good luck on the next part of your PIP journey, let us know how it goes.
