A thread for all who have DC with SN. The thread is deleted and 90 days and doesn’t show in active. The fire is on and the bar is well stocked.

It's billed as biology, chemistry, physics, one GCSE. With chemistry and physics spelled out and described.
Like I say, they are just useless at proof reading.

It isn’t just a matter of proofreading, though. That’s what I was pointing out. There isn’t a single award combined science GCSE in England now. That is beyond just not proofreading correctly.

There is a combined science single award GCSE in NI. In Wales, there is a single award combined applied science GCSE with plans to maybe bring back a single award combined science GCSE. There is a single award combined science IGCSE. But there is not a single award combined science GCSE in England.

@drspouse only thing I can think of is take the 3 that are offered, ask for two more at higher level, if rejected study for lower level at the school and tutor alongside for private exams if the traditional route to uni is the end goal. Would you cover DS’s fees at uni? It’s becoming an unpopular choice if there is not a high paying job prospect for the loans.

ZairWazAnOldLady · 28/03/2026 01:27

I’m laughing at the costa incentive, ds is the same and loves costa. We haven’t been for ages. I must do more with that young man. We seem to rush from one activity to another but never get time to do the little things.

drspouse · 28/03/2026 07:39

@HedgehogsAgree I don't think DS will make it to uni but because there's no route to 5 GCSEs it limits the college courses he can apply to.
@ExistingonCoffee I get your point now.
Anyway hopefully he won't be at this school much longer.

RainingDucks · 28/03/2026 09:03

@Lougle lovely to get a healthcare professional who gets it. I hope the jab helps with pain management.

@HedgehogsAgree hope some decompress and res set time helps DD to regroup and stem the spiral.

@drspouse sounds frustrating and tbh why we pushed so hard for EOTAS as the school was quite happy to effectively babysit DD in the send hub with word searches & offer only Aqa awards / L1 qualification when she was set in the top set for maths & English in Y7 based on her SATs and midterm testing. they then refused to cover gcse level work in their send hub. This is why the government direction of travel for these “inclusion” hubs makes me worry as from I’ve heard many are staffed by TAs and “holding” pens for behaviour issues rather than educational need sigh. None of the local specialists schools did GCSE’s routinely as for the cohort it wasn’t deemed needed but there are 100s of kids like DD in this “gap” that don’t need to be! I hope you can get the right place for DS to thrive in. My brother has got round the gap by getting both his DDs into £££ private school which we could never afford but it’s been really interesting to observe both thriving hugely in a mid level academic & sporty school because classes are very small but both have mixed ND profiles

RainingDucks · 28/03/2026 09:47

Got a very long 14hr day (w travel) supporting DD1 today at a sports competition these days are long & draining but it’s also a chance to have a emotional break from constantly scaffolding DD2 as I’m not in the house DH has to lead however I’ll probably pay for it tomorrow as she’ll release it again. Nice to chat to DD1 in the car though my favourite bit as she struggles to get time with me at home as DD2 will but in a lot otherwise.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 28/03/2026 20:56

Hi folks. First time visiting this pub. Hoping the house white is decent. First day of the Easter holidays and I’m already knackered…

ExistingonCoffee · 28/03/2026 22:21

Welcome @TrentCrimmsflowinglocks. I’m sorry the holidays are off to a tough start. It is relentless, isn’t it?

@RainingDucks I hope DD1’s competition went well.

Lougle · 28/03/2026 22:24

@RainingDucks how was the comp?

@TrentCrimmsflowinglocks welcome. I have 3 DDs with SN (1 teen, 2 young adult) and I moan here regularly.

RainingDucks · 28/03/2026 23:38

Welcome @TrentCrimmsflowinglocks

super long day not helped by main road overnight shut so we had to divert on way home as well but home now. Competition went well DD1 was happy but knackered thanks.

HedgehogsAgree · 29/03/2026 02:55

@TrentCrimmsflowinglocks hi 👋

HedgehogsAgree · 29/03/2026 15:19

I am knackered for all the right reasons today. I went to a gig and….. danced the night away! Well until 10.30pm. I haven’t danced and sung for years. Could do with an extra couple of hours today rather than losing one.

Good luck everyone with a change in routine over the Easter holidays.

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 29/03/2026 16:07

DGD is so no problem in the school holidays. Well, she is rarely a problem with us, but DS and DDIL struggle with her in term time (and her younger sibling is on the receiving end of it).

HedgehogsAgree · 29/03/2026 23:39

Strange changing of the clocks event, I’m in bed already. Let’s hope that continues.

Has anyone got experience of fluoxetine? DD is wondering if she needs a higher does. On 10mg but I’m assuming that is a child’s dose. Wants something to enable her to do more, she really wants to start going to friends and family houses and back in cars etc

ZairWazAnOldLady · 29/03/2026 23:49

Loooong day here but ds ok I think. Who knows I might even get to my desk this week.

HedgehogsAgree · 29/03/2026 23:53

@ZairWazAnOldLady two of us in bed before midnight! Here’s hoping it’s a full and deep nights sleep at your house.

Lougle · 30/03/2026 00:49

@HedgehogsAgree two of mine have been on fluoxetine. 10mg is a low dose. Usual starting dose is 20mg, and usually up to 40mg but can go as high as 60mg. It didn't really suit my two. One went on to sertraline, then venlafaxine. The other went on to sertraline, then duloxetine. DD3 is on quite a high dose of sertraline for her OCD, but it is known that OCD often needs a higher dose to be effective.

ExistingonCoffee · 30/03/2026 09:38

@HedgehogsAgree A night out! Glad you enjoyed it. I would think DD could increase the dose.

DS1 tried Fluoxetine, Sertraline, and Citalopram before settling on Mirtazapine. Mirtazapine is often used when there is PTSD involved.

Lougle · 30/03/2026 09:43

Honestly, these professionals have such poor communication skills. I got a phone call a few minutes ago. "We need an appointment to assess needs". Sorry, who are you? Oh, a care company, ok. "How about 2pm today?" Umm....ok. "Right, she'll be at your house at 2pm." At my house?? Great, that means I have to tidy up and somehow occupy the puppy (who is over 1 but is really needy so may be a puppy until the day she dies).

So now I have a therapy hub appointment for DD3, a care assessment for DD1 and 4 hours of driving lessons this evening.

Does anyone else find that no matter how clear their diary looks, it's a lie?

ExistingonCoffee · 30/03/2026 10:05

@Lougle there’s always something creeping up. I hate appointments being sprung on me on the day. Particularly ones that could have been organised before the day. I keep a meticulous diary; then others are set on meddling with it.

OP posts:
HedgehogsAgree · 30/03/2026 10:59

@Lougle @ExistingonCoffee when it doesn't suit is the bit that worries me. Was it easy to come off of it? I’m guessing this is a very similar drug to sertraline.

Previously an increase made DD less mobile and spaced out. Does anyone use pronoprol?is this a good boost for doing big things instead of fluoxetine?

I realise we need a medication review with the psych.

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 30/03/2026 11:44

DD2 was put on fluoxetine, just before her A levels. She was able to take her A levels, but it didn’t do much else imo. She’s also been on sertraline (nightmare to come off), citalopram (she went straight on to venlafaxine, so withdrawal was never noticeable) and venlafaxine. She came off the venlafaxine to get pregnant. She’s been prescribed citalopram again, to try to reduce her OCD.

I have never thought any antidepressant did much for her depression, given the 50 plus incidents of suicidal behaviour over the last 10 years!

NoHaudinMaWheest · 30/03/2026 12:27

Hedgehogsagree Ds is on 40mg of fluoxetine and has been for several years having reduced from 60mg which he had been on for even longer. 10mg is a really small dose so there might be room for gradual increase. Though as you say she probably needs a psychiatric review.
DD was in sertaline but it made her nauseous which with her anorexia was clearly not a good idea. Mitrazapine made her almost unable to function but duloxetine seems to work quite well. I don't think that any of them have actually made a huge difference to either Dc, just enough for other therapies or changes of circumstances/approaches to take effect.

HedgehogsAgree · 30/03/2026 13:43

Thank you.

@BlueandWhitePorcelain sertraline is an absolute nightmare to come off. This is what made DD bedbound for 3 months with the most horrendous body shocks, unable to eat/wash/talk and every side effect you can imagine. It also took away a lot of function for many years.

That’s the big worry I wouldn’t want to increase fluoxetine and it has little effect but is a nightmare to reduce/come off of.

What about propanol (sp) is that an occasional use for specific circumstances?

NoHaudinMaWheest · 30/03/2026 14:16

Hedgehogs I think it is very individual. DD didn't really have much difficulty coming off sertraline though she hadn't been on it very long.
Ds has reduced fluoxetine without any difficulty too but he never really had much in the way of side effects anyway. It seems that your Dd is particularly sensitive. Is there a liquid form which means you could increase/ decrease by tiny increments? We did that with DS when he was on aripriprazole which he was sensitive to.
