Anyone else rely on DLA and carer's and worry about it being stopped/ cut?

DS receives DLA high rate care and I claim carer's allowance as had to quit work in the end.

If I weren't receiving these I would be relying on income support and I get all worried about this as I feel the DLA and CA are life savers ATM.

I don't know if DS will always be entitled to high rate care DLA anyway - I would hope from a mum POV that he will eventually develop enough that he doesn't qualify for it, and that these developments would mean I could return to work - but who knows!

Anyone else feel the same way?

I was just talking to DH about this the other day. If thy stopped DS2's DLA, then I'd lose my CA and FTC would drop. We'd in effect lose £7k+! There is no way we could survive with losing that much, I don't /can't work becuase of DS2 and DH has a very low wage despite working full time.

It's very scary!

Gigantaur · 30/06/2010 18:26

im the same as 5inthebed.

I know that DS deserves his DLA but if they are going to start getting strict over it all in a cost cutting scheme then children with asd are the ones likely to get dropped.

i am very worried indeed

Lougle · 30/06/2010 18:48

I too am concerned. DH is on a low wage. I have to be at home to care for DD1.

Yep, same here, both my dd's get DLA (middle and higher rate), i gave up work to become dd2's carer, without DLA we would not be able to manage.

I'm worried we will loose dd1's DLA, she has Aspergers, if she has to be assessed i can't see them letting us to continue on middle rate. Dd1 seems nt most of the time, nobody really see's her when she's at her worst because its in the evenings that she suffers with anxiety and at the weekends when she's hard work (how will they see this?).

rebl · 30/06/2010 19:19

Yes very worried.

SanctiMoanyArse · 30/06/2010 19:24

Absolutely; DH is on a tiny income but I don't get IS or anything- it's complex and related to DH being a student apparently.

Luckily, am fat enough- no need to eat

rrationally i think we will gets oemthing- ds1's statement was only extended last week with 'sue to his severe aggression we are extending his TA reaquirements to 16 hours' across the letter; ds3 ijs in a SNU.

With the changes to HB (we're in the expensive part of the city but a move to cheap area would mean losing school, escortts etc) we're looking at a maximum loss, with 2 kids getting DLA, around 9k. Given our non loans absed income is £16, that's pretty harsh!

NAS are asking for famillies of autistic kids to contact therir campaigns dept if theya re worried, we already have but no reply yet- worth people e-mailing I woudl think.

wraith · 02/07/2010 01:16

itv all depends on what there going to decide is fit for work, a high functioning autistic aspergers, who cant remember to eat shower go to the loo , but can read anything....

or someone with depression.

its a bad situation especially if it falls to ticking boxes

can they move yes speak kind of understand yes
fine they can flip burgers ...

it worrys me greatly

I am terrified. Both myself and DH work PT so someone is always around to care for DS. We could not survive without DLA and the tax credits. I cannot claim carers anyway. An assessor in front of DS will see a chatty, funny able child on a good day but the work and planning that goes into achieving this will not be recognised I bet. On a bad day they see a frightened withdrawn little boy with severe anxiety and sensory issues.

Has anyone got a link for the NAS campaigns site - I would love to share and discuss my concerns.

wraith · 02/07/2010 16:26

im aware that dla doesnt directly relate to ability to work what im saying is if there changing the way dla works to get people who can work into work and off of it thats the sort of thing they may well do

read the budjet notes it specifies dla and getting the people on it back to work, makes no sense to me but well im not a politician

laumiere · 04/07/2010 08:10

Wraith, Osborne is deliberately conflating what used to be Incap benefit (getting people back to work) and DLA (awarded regardless of working and actually helps keep many disabled people in work) to try to cut spending. Traditionally Incap (now ESA) was seen as easier to to defraud, hence targets to reduce the number of people on it. DLA is one of the least defrauded benefits as it's such a blardy faff to get, with around 0.5% of claimants being fraudulent. By deliberately mixing the two up as 'disabled benefit' Osborne can get away with targets like getting 20% of people on DLA off it (so 19.5% who do actually need it and the 0.5% fraudsters).

Bloody political sleight of hand, ably backed up by the Daily Fail and Torygraph.

roundthebend4 · 04/07/2010 09:02

roundthebend4 · 04/07/2010 10:02

Ah seethat must be where I'm going wrong silly me I need send ds3 to work, think he can start on his 5th birthday or should I send him now

SanctiMoanyArse · 04/07/2010 10:05

Here's NAS site budget

Osboorne is deliberately mixing disability benefits yes, if it was in any way related to work it wouldn't make sense as chidlren can get it.

But you know:

I resigned from Lib Dems in wrioting over this and received no response at all. So they don't care.

Georgy Boy launched an attack on ESA / IB the week afterr the budget so my guess is someone pointed out to the prat his mix up and he isn;t man enough to say I made a mistake and is instead launching both attacks;

I am trying to get some kind of a response from labour about this and all I can get is comments about VAT etc- that's their main focus. Disability benefits are not trendy, and most people cope daily by pretending it can't actually happen to them, so we're left as a minority.

Someone needs to be coordinating a campaign but as plans have been left until 2013 and no specifics given the government know it will fizzle out. The main charities etc aren't seemingly that good at new media- we need some kind of facebook awareness thing: a bit like the pone where everyone posted their bra colour if you remember it- 'Disability can happen to anyone at any moment: fighting for a decent safety net + health insurance: don't let the government steal that from YOU' but although I am twittering and blogging similar stuff, and being picked up a bit, nothing really happens.

roundthebend4 · 04/07/2010 10:12

I wrote to my mp bog standard reply but enjoyed writing it ,see Rivens post about disablity bitch fir couple of the lines

siblingrivalry · 04/07/2010 10:40

DD1's DLA is up for renewal very soon. As a matter of interest, has anyone had a renewal application declined? We will be screwed if we don't get it -DH has had to cut his hours to get dd to a decent school miles away.

SanctiMoanyArse · 04/07/2010 10:43

the first page on my (rather underused) blog has the letter we sent, 'where to start' here

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 04/07/2010 13:01

I have only just quit work because DLA allowed me to be at home with DD1, if they take it awa im screwed!
