SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Does anyone have SALT, Physio or OT quantified in part 3 of their child's statement?

Got a meeting with a case officer about DS' proposed statement. I just want to know what the likelihood of me getting these things quantified are rather than the vague stuff we have got at the moment like "X will need regular input from OT"

Oh yes! We have quantified OT and physio - it's very detailed. Have quoted

Ds will received half termly blocks of weekly Ot within the school setting to address his difficulties (15 sessions per year). This may be in a group or 1:1 basis depending on his needs throughout the school year. This will be provided by a qualified OT.

this is repeated word for word for the physio

Then:-
DS will receive 1 hour of both physio and OT per half term to monitor and adjust his equipment needs.

The time to attend AR's comes from this hour per half term - it's stated somewhere else in the statment, can't find it atm!

Have not got it for speech but that is not really an area of need.

We have SALT quantified - also got the phrasing changed from 'up to 4 times a term' to '4 times a term'.

nappyaddict · 24/05/2010 16:35

What are both your DC's conditions?

My DS has cerebral palsy - he can walk but not well and is in an SN unit attached to the mainstream school (where he spends at least half his time) - he is working at an average Reception level and is 5.2 years old.

DD1's is not quantified. It says that DD1 "will need structured programmes that will develop her speech and language skills through language programmes and targets worked on in the classroom, supervised by school staff throughout the whole of the school curriculum during the whole of the school day. Regular assessment, advice and monitoring will be provided by a SALT, either directly or indirectly, at a level determined by the therapist."

I know it's a little bit woolly - wriggling room for the school/LA, but I am happy that the Special school is set up for her needs.

lou031205 · 24/05/2010 17:27

DD1 has a brain malformation which affects her globally.

Ds has salt quantfied are just about to go into battle for Ot but looks like unit (s&l) going to help as they won't take ds without OT support and equipment.

This is the unit that Lea actually agreed on they propsed it

Ds has dystonic Cp and verbal/oral dyspraxia

No, we don't have it in Part 3, only as "non-educational"

Non-educational my @rse! Which is one of the reasons we are off to Tribunal too.

I'll meet you in the foyer Starlight, for a cuppa! [wink}

lou031205 · 24/05/2010 17:45

Ours is in part 3, as is OT. Physio is in Part 6 because every time we get referred they refuse to treat because there is 'nothing obviously (structurally) wrong and OT and Portage are doing a good job...'

daisy5678 · 24/05/2010 17:51

J's OT and SALT are both in Parts 2 & 3. Took a battle though, as bloody ever!

silverfrog · 24/05/2010 18:08

ours isn't quantified at all - which is why we were off to Tribunal. (probably had the slot after Star and Militant )

But LA has agreed to our choice of school now and so it doesn't amtter what her statement says anyway. school is so specialised (ABA school) that SALT, OT and sensory integration needs are met anyway. and school has own contracts with SALTs and OTs to come in half termly to give specified support (only 3 pupils in school, so specific support easily given within this timeframe)

given this school was agreed to, it made more sense to go with this and forgo statement revisions, so we settled on the original wording (ie not worht the paper written on)

statement will need major overhaul if LA try to withdraw dd1 form current school, but then again it would have done anyway in that situation.

SLT in Part 3 and quantified. Currently working on getting OT in too....

IPSEA can definitely give you valuable advice and support - please do get in touch with them.

HairyMaclary · 24/05/2010 20:23

I hadn't realised that we were so unusual, that's awful - no wonder you are all going to tribunal!

Our Physio and Ot take turns so DS has one every half term, physio is usually 1:1 as his needs are specific but sometimes there are 2 children, his Ot is usually in a group of 3 but at least 2 of the 5 sessions will be 1:1. Both therapists work the full half term even if it is longer than 5 weeks as they tend to find over the course of an academic year due to bank holidays, INSETs and child sickness days it averages out at 15 sessions so if they have more one term it doesn't matter as it tends to balance out naturally. I have the (work) mobile numbers of both the therapists and ring them frequently.

I really hope this situation stays the same and govt cuts don't threaten it - however I still don't think that 15 hours of physio (or OT for that matter) a year is enough for a child with DS's needs but I can see that they are giving us what they can so we now pay privately for physio and I thank god we can.

Good luck to you all!

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 24/05/2010 20:29

thank you for this thread - just realised how non-specific dd's draft statement is. Off to do battle...

Gallow's humour! I have threatened tribunal before - for his very first statement - luckily I went straight to the top on the advice of our fabulous SALT and got it all sorted out. DS's transition statement to Reception had everything I wanted in - I do wonder if that is a coincidence??!

eatyourveg · 24/05/2010 20:44

we have weekly salt in part 3

nappyaddict · 25/05/2010 14:52

Those that get quantified OT, physio or SALT how often do you get it and what is your child's condition.

I just don't know what is realistic for DS who will start school September 2010 and has autism with possible dyspraxia. How severe is your child's speech delay eatyourveg? I just don't think we'd get weekly visits TBH.

OP posts:
HairyMaclary · 25/05/2010 15:06

It partly depends on your child's placement as well. I know one of the reasons we get weekly therapy is because DS is in a unit where a physio and Ot spend 2 days a week each. Before we knew he had got this place our OT strongly suggested 2 other local schools we should apply for as they already had good links there and visited them regularly - she said that they could give him better support in these 2 schools than some others that they had no contact with.
