YOUNG, AUTISTIC and PROUD

The above programme will be on Ch4, 8-9 pm on 5th April and for the following 3 weeks too. It follows 9 families who have a child on the spectrum. One not to miss I think so please spread the word.

Thanks have put the details on my facebook in the hope a few people I know watch it.

I enjoyed the last programme I watched like this, which focused on a teen and two young men.

genieinabottle · 22/03/2010 18:09

Yes it was a good programme to wacth 'autistic me' i think it was called. This one should be interesting too (i hope) and it is for 4 weeks

Yes that was the one genie.

I hope lots of people tune in, glad it covers 9 families, hopefully that will mean a good range of the spectrum will be shown to highlight the different issues children and families face.

HelensMelons · 22/03/2010 19:29

Thank you genie, i've written it down - thought 'autistic me' was interesting as well. Will also have my hankies at the ready!x

I really hope it does show the full range. The title somehow makes me think it may not - suggests an awareness that Ds2 certainly doesn't have.

I believe the programme focuses on the children working together to make their own variety show to be shown in a West End theatre.

kieranandalexsmummy · 24/03/2010 18:48

sounds great thanks!!!!

sphil · 25/03/2010 22:37

Lol NorthernSky. I'd love to watch someone else scrubbing poo off walls - it would make me feel I wasn't alone!

grumpyoldeeyore · 25/03/2010 22:47

I think the BBC are doing an autism season in spring / early summer. From what I remember reading one programme was looking for people with autism who were learning to drive which made it sound more like entertainment than documentary. Wonder with this one will be the same. will be watching though

MiladyDeWinter · 25/03/2010 23:01

Starlight if I had the money I'd commission a documentary like that.

Cheers genie, it's on the calendar.

Has this been cancelled/postponed? It's not on my TV guide?

Just remembered about it, found thread, thought oh no have missed half! Looked at TV guide, TV guide says DrDolittle.

MelJLincs · 05/04/2010 20:59

This link says it will be on 12th April? blogs.thestage.co.uk/education/2010/04/young-autistic-and-proud/index.html

aSilverlining · 05/04/2010 21:10

Thanks Mel that's great, didn't want to miss it.

Does look more like the families are closer to the high functioning end of the spectrum doesn't it. Or maybe it will? We will have to wait and see I guess.

It sounds like it will be great in a positive, look what we can acheive way, but doesn't help to explain the day to day trials for families dealing with meltdowns / toilet issues / sensory issues / communication difficulties/ etc. Even people who 'know' my DS don't realise how much his autism affects his daily living, he is eligible and qualifies the highest rate of DLA care component as he is still in nappies, doesn't sleep a solid night, needs constant reassurance, different food, is on bowel meds, has sensory issues, phobias, etc. Or how about the huge strain in terms of getting a diagnosis, support, therapies, statements, benefits, etc?

Mind you showing all that probably wouldn't make good telly would it.

aSilverlining · 05/04/2010 21:11

"Or maybe it will .... be a mixed range of the autistic spectrum." that should say
