Phobia's ASD/AS

Just wondering what phobias your ASD children have (if any)? some of dd's little phobias make me chuckle (i know i shouldn't laugh).

We were walking out of school yesterday trying to dodge the ice, i was pulling her along when she shouted at me 'mummy you know i cant walk over holes' as we went towards the drain cover. This is one of the phobias she has had since she could walk (she cant walk over drains), she used to not be able to walk over cracks in the pavement.

hi!
alot of food phobias with ds2...he's better now...but i have to make sure i serve certain foods 'with' certain foods...or touching/not touching other foods...otherwise we get meltdown...

eg..he's always refused jacket potato...despite me promising he could leave the skin... i have now given in and leave the skin in the kitchen..he reluctantly eats the potato.
(once he has stopped moaning about the potato... i will reintroduce skin...slowly...as we are working on what he calls 'GROWN UP MEALS'...which mainly deals with his realisation that how he eats is fine at home but has caused problems in other places. So

empty packets - they get stuffed behind the desk or the sofa so he can't see them.

drink cans and any cup with a coke/pepsi logo.

If I lie next to him in bed I am only allowed to be wearing one layer of clothing on my top.

also have the thing with certain foods not touching each other.

doors shut, toilet seat down.

peppa pig

Seuss · 12/01/2010 14:07

dirty plates.

Seuss · 12/01/2010 14:08

sure there's many more...

Seuss · 12/01/2010 14:11

Some fruit shoot bottles - but only some - unfortunately I can't work out what it is that makes some ok!

MrsForgetful · 12/01/2010 14:20

ds3- his pillow...he dribbles on it deliberately when i wash it- to make it smell of him.

Marne · 12/01/2010 14:21

Seuss- thats a lot . Dh has a phobia of dirty plates.

Dd2 screams at some tv characters, dd1 used to cry at roly mo and the fimbles.

Dd1 has got over some of her phobias, she used to scream at any female (i couldnt take her anywhere), she wouldn't walk outside until she was 3.5 unless dragged.

Dd1 also doesn't like any of her food touching on the plate.

dd1's worst one was water. it was a hassle avoiding baths and washing her instead for over a year, but even that was nothing compared to her not drinking! she just couldn't bear any liquids at all... for over 9 months thankfully, she is doing ok drinking now, and in the bath, and actually enjoys swimming

I'm sure there's loads of others too - most of them wash over me, as it becomes second nature to avoid, and it is only when we are out in the "real" world that I notice them again, when I get strange looks for doing something that seems normal to me!

othermother · 12/01/2010 16:47

Tom hates anyone or anything touching his hair, and now even refuses to put up his hood or wear a hat even when it's freezing cold. Weirdly, he wants me to stroke his hair better if anything touches it.

He has a thing about eating too, in that if anyone sneezes, or coughs or even breathes heavily whilst in the same room as him when he's eating, he will spit out the food in his mouth and throw any remaining food in the bin.

I'm sure there are more but I cannot think as I am being pestered by him right now.

anonandlikeit · 12/01/2010 18:36

has had phobia of
Circles
trees
grass
holes

Still has a phobia of

Newspapers
Badges & pins
shiny/satin type material
The green gate up the road(don't know why)
Very Dark skinned people
Babies

Loads of stuff associated with food, not so much phobia but won't have food touching, eat food if broken or cut up before he sees them. Will only eat hot food if hot, so won't have cold sausage rolls, sausages etc.... My boy has standards you know

linglette · 12/01/2010 18:59

Hairdryers. It's incredibly useful actually. Whenever he is refusing to do something, I say "DS2, do you want to do it or shall I get the hairdryer?" works every time. Can I have my bad mummy award now?

Thank goodness he can go to barbers where they don't use them.....

PeachyWillNeverVoteBNP · 12/01/2010 19:10

DS1 ahs a phobia of sleeping alone, this is a PITA and means he constantly wakes his sibs to come to his room;this has resulted i turn in ds3 sleepwalking.

siblingrivalry · 12/01/2010 21:15

Great thread. I could go on forever with dd's phobias -but I will restrain myself!
The main ones are : she can't eat if she can see a tag or if someone coughs or belches.
Terrified of balloons and inflatable toys.
Scared of lifts and escalators and open-tred stairs.

Yes, of course.. the inside out socks!!

bubblagirl · 13/01/2010 16:15

he cant stand the feel of the bunched up cotton along the seam so have to be inside out

mysonben · 13/01/2010 16:15

Here is a list of DS's phobias:

-showers or shower hose.
-cutting nails
-fluff floating in the bath
-water on his face or... snow!
-slippers
-socks that don't match even if they're same colour apart from one tiny detail!
-black shoes (don't ask!)
-loud noises
-many foods
-toilet paper left in the bowl
-phases with : puddles, cracks in pavement,...
-his tiny paddling pool last summer.

There are more but i can think of them right now.

mysonben · 13/01/2010 16:18

Oh i forgot,
-brown bits in bananas even when tiny.
-half a croissant or chocolate petit pain,...it must always be whole!

debs40 · 13/01/2010 16:20

Not sure these are phobias in the true sense of the word but the sight of:

Bananas
Cheese
Milk
Bread
Me wearing tights!
Boys with long hair- like his 4 year old brother - 'it's not right'!
Sleeping alone
Wearing new underpants - his idea of hell (we have three pairs on the go which he has had for over a year and a half and he will not wear anythign else!)

troutpout · 13/01/2010 16:37

old ones:

balloons/party poppers popping

haircuts

Nail cutting

The hoover

lifts

The bells at school

Hand dryers

sudden fountains/squirters of water (like those you get in city centres)

Loud noises

the randomly flushing urinals at school

the 'gonk, gonk, gonk' (sound the toilet made after it flushed)

toe fluff in the bath

remote control cars/those battery type rabbits/pigs

The piano on dog and duck

Those moving christmas tree things that you get in big shopping malls

long tunnels when he knew there was an end but couldn't see it

These ones are still a problem:

wasps/flying insects

The boiler when it 'flares' up

Heights

Aeroplanes/flight

sock seams (oh my god..they have to be just right)

countdowns (or any hyped up anticipation type situation) He hated games like Buckaroo when he was little.

blood (he faints)

There are more i'm sure

troutpout · 13/01/2010 16:43

thought of more...

any constrictive (or what he deems constrictive ) clothing

sound shows/films (like you have in museums)

bubblagirl · 13/01/2010 16:49

ive had ds throwing himself on the floor because i put socks on right way round because the seams were aggravating his feet screaming blue murder in supermarket trying to literally tear his feet off or stomping his feet on floor over and over again to try and get rid of the feeling hence why we have inside out socks as i cant seem to get the socks just right lol

Peachy · 14/01/2010 09:57

I have a few bad phobias myself,I can't ttype the name of the worst but long wriggly retileswith no legs.... you know em.school has to vet books etc as it is so severe
