Ds 5.5 has an ASD assessment today in school. I have waited over a year and a half for this referral appointment and she will be able to give a dx.

This morning he has woken up with a temperature and not feeling well, i have given him Calpol and taken him to school.

Please tell me you would have done the same, im feeling awful

i have a son with dcd and getting him diagnosed was a long process, so yes i would have done the same due to worrying about how long i would have to wait for another appointment

good luchk with the meeting

claw3 · 16/11/2009 10:13

Thank you Leamac, this has been going on since ds was 2 years old.

What is dcd? (sorry probably really obvious, what it stands for, just not familiar with it)

i think anyone would have! Hope it goes well!

debs40 · 16/11/2009 10:16

Hiya, I would have done the same thing too unless he was really unwell (or I thought it was swine flu!).

Hope it goes well. We have our first OT appointment today so here's hoping...

silverfrog · 16/11/2009 10:18

I would have definitely done the same.

In fact, I probably have dragged dd1 to appointments when unwell - either that or wait another year, which often is not an option.

hope all goes well- the wait is nearly over!

claw3 · 16/11/2009 10:32

Thanks ladies, im feeling so guilty!

He has no other symptoms other than a bit of a temperature. I keep justifying it to myself, as the temperature could have started an hour later and he would have been in school anyway

Will let you know what the verdict is this afternoon, i have to go to school at 2.45, if i dont get a phone call beforehand!

Good luck Debs with OT.

I would definitely have done the same claw, no doubt about it so stop worrying!!!!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/11/2009 11:58

If it helps, I had a bit of a temperature all weekend (swine flu jab) and paracetamol kept it at bay and I did all my usual activities, he will prob be the same with the Calpol!!

BriocheDoree · 16/11/2009 12:05

Let us know how it goes claw...I know what a difficult journey you have had with your little boy (who sounds a sweetie, btw!)
Anyway, if he's a bit under the weather that might actually HELP for a paed appt. The worst thing is when they go in there on their best behaviour and the paed can't see what's wrong...

claw3 · 16/11/2009 12:57

Thanks again everyone, no phone call from school, so he must be OKish!

Assessment for him starts at 1.45, so fingers crossed that the calpol works until then

He really is a sweetie, wouldnt hurt a fly, extremely passive to the point of worryingly passive. He even tries to hug children as they are hitting him

Well ive done my housework, im sitting twiddling my thumbs and clock watching now! Roll on 2.45 when i can leave the house.

he sounds lovely

misscutandstick · 16/11/2009 14:36

good luck claw!

i know what you mean about passive - DS5 will just stand there and let kids kick/hit/scratch him and stand on him its awful to watch. its very worrying for the future too.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/11/2009 14:41

DD just runs away too.

Almost time, hope you hear about it soon and its the result you are hoping for.

mysonben · 16/11/2009 14:53

I'd have done the same too, appointments days are sooo long to arrive.
He should be fine.
Keep us updated on dx.

TotalChaos · 16/11/2009 15:42

oh god I've done the same just so DS wouldn't miss NHS SALt appointments, given the massive waits for everything you've behaved completely reasonably.

claw3 · 16/11/2009 16:42

Right, back from school and he seems fine and managed to cope very well in school by all accounts.

She is writing a report with recommendations that ds has a social and communication assessment, with OT input for a more in depth assessment (she will have this written, so paed can refer at our appointment on 27th November)

She thinks he definitely has ASD, she is also concerned by his speech, language and communication which she thinks is caused by processing disorders and would like a more in depth assessment done. (i already knew this, but felt good to hear an expert agree, as the school had been trying to convince me that i was mad!)

She was also shocked that his teacher described his academic skills as 'average' as she didnt feel this should be case, given all of his problems.

Am so glad they are taking your concerns seriously and just confirming what you knew already, hopefully you will get more support now.

debs40 · 16/11/2009 17:03

Yippee!! Claw I am so glad you now have someone on your side 'singing from the same hymn sheet' so to speak. That is good news and I hope it will start to take away some of the frustration at dealing with those who are unable to know what they do not know.... as Donald Rumsfold would say!

We had our first OT this morning and it was amazing to talk with someone who knew all about children who constantly chew inappropriate things or lay prone on the floor or put their feet behind their ears 'because it's comfy'!

claw3 · 16/11/2009 17:11

The school had already agreed with her before i arrived, to give ds one to one SALT support, twice a week obviously as a result of her findings. Something they told me that couldnt do only last Thursday!

Wasnt able to talk at length to her, all a bit hurried, asking me questions, took up most of the time. Only had 25 minutes, so she only explained her findings very briefly as there were so many.

She is going to email me a draft copy of her report ASAP.

A step in the right direction, so im happier, ds is lying on the settee with pillow and quilt (he must be ill, he isnt doing somersaults!

Thanks everyone for the support.

He is a wee trooper, and so are you! Well done for doing this for him!!!

claw3 · 16/11/2009 17:15

Hi Debs, sorry cross posted. Glad to hear your OT appointment went well. I found the OT amazing, i have never met anyone (well apart from MN) who actually understand to the degree of the OT.
