Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

How many people would be interested in a UK Floortime conference?

I've started a new thread on this in case people aren't following the old Floortime one.

I've been wondering for some time (with MrsT) whether we should try to organise some sort of UK based Floortime conference/workshop, since quite a number of us seem to be using it or interested in doing so. The idea would be that we wouldn't have to pay as much as if we each got a private consultant in - and we could swop ideas, which would be great as well.

I have to say that I've no experience of doing this - but know people who have, who I could go to for advice. And MrsT is very well-connected! (Sorry MrsT for taking your name in vain here...)

So far on the other thread the following people have expressed an interest:
me
MrsT
Silverfrog
SC13

Anyone else?

Just to update and bump for the poster who's started a thread about London Floortime training.

Have taken a bit of advice, which is to contact our Stan and ask him how many delegates we would need to fund fees and travel for a consultant. DH organises conferences as part of his job, so has some ideas about venues in the SW - but would that suit everyone? I'm thinking Exeter, Bristol or Taunton? Say if you would find the travel difficult.

I'm presuming a weekend would be best for everyone?

W/end best. Where's Taunton? Any place that's easily reachable by train from London is good for me

silverfrog · 01/06/2009 14:13

Bristol area would be good for me, as my brother lives there - in fact, if you could organise it for Ocotber (end of), then i could be on hand to meet new neice/nephew too

seriously though, anytime ok-ish for us, incorportating a weekend woudl be good, as not so many days off for dh.

sphil · 01/06/2009 22:18

Taunton is in Somerset SC13 - about 2 hrs by train from London.

I'd be interested. However live in Yorkshire! Are there consultants based in SW?

sphil · 02/06/2009 08:46

There are two - one in Wales and one in Somerset, but she works in the US for most of the year and is only in the UK for July and August. We used her last year - she was good, knew her stuff, but wouldn't be able to use her for a conference as I wouldn't want to arrange it for the summer when people may be on holiday. MrsT has used the Welsh based one and would recommend I think.
I have a feeling the third UK based consultant is in Lothian, which would be nearer for you. Hang on, will see if I can link.

hi, hav not been on MN for ages but this sounds like a great idea. unfortunately i live in argyll (epicentre of current swine flu outbreak in scotland!) and there is no way on this planet i could leave my poor dh with 3 kids under 5 (one with ASD of course) for a weekend.

oink

but am keen to read all about it on here. good luck.

Just wondering if this would be appropriate for a professional to attend, or if the slant of it wouldn't be suitable. Thinking about mentioning it to the disability service here in sweden to try and get them interested in using it here as a form of therapy.

amyCgn · 11/07/2009 20:29

Hi - just joined mumsnet as came across this thread searching google- I would def. be interested (live in London but can travel to whereever for a weekend), so please let me know if happening!

Lauree · 11/07/2009 21:36

Do you think the conference would be adults only, or bring the child along too? what are you thinking? Is there any particular age range that this type of learning particularly suits?

sphil · 12/07/2009 20:13

I'm really sorry everyone but I'd had no response whatsoever from ICDL, who are the Floortime 'group' in the US. I've emailed them twice now. I haven't been able to find any direct contact details for Greenspan either. Anyone got any other ideas for a contact?

Catski - I think it could be parents or professionals. Lauree - I had seen it as a conference rather than a workshop - but see what others think.

I might contact MrsTurnip, who knows a Floortime consultant in Cardiff. See if she has any ideas...

Hi all,
I am a PLAY Project Consultant based in Canada, but originally from the UK. I just found this thread and wanted to share with you that Dr Rick Solomon will be doing a workshop in London in early October. His PLAY Project is based on DIR/Floortime and he is on the faculty of Greenspan's ICDL outfit too.
I have worked with Rick and been at some of his workshops, he makes Floortime very accessible to parents and is a great teacher (also has a wonderful sense of humour!)
I would recommend this workshop to those of you interested in Floortime in the UK.
Good luck.
Robert Oppenheimer

Hi to everyone out there!!
Is this workshop geared mostly towards children in the autistic spectrum?

My DS is not on the spectrum. He has severe attention and concentration issues (various others problems as well). I would love to find someone that could advice me on ways to help him focus.

Thanks
