statementing - being a bit dim if you could spare just a sec

at the very beginning of the nightmare - wrote and asked for initial assessment, got the pink and yellow forms to complete...

errm, who has to organise reports? you know from teacher and ed psych? is it me or 'them'?

Admittedly only briefly had a glance thru the pack 'they' sent, got it yesterday and it was hectic, it probably says in there somewhere in jargon, but you guys are brill and easier to understand. XXX

If you are at the stage of requesting an assessment, it is helpful to include evidence to support your parent report. Ds paeds and salt wrote brief letters to add to my parent report. But he had been refused before so we needed someone to take notice!

lingle · 07/05/2009 08:52

can I be even dimmer and ask what a Statement is and does and what kind of things you put in the parents' report?

"It will be harder to get a Statement and DX at the same time" was one of the things thrown at me by the paed. the other week when I declined to enter the diagnostic process.

In the parent's report are you supposed to outline all the things that are harder for your child than for other children?

misscutandstick · 07/05/2009 09:09

yes i think so, but with more reference to education and what they would need in order to have the same education that a typical child should receive. eg. someone to help them stay on task if they have concentration issues. i think... unless someone can tell me different, ive not done this before, and dont really know.

misscutandstick, how are you finding the statementing process in Notts? So far i have only briefly mentioned it to our portage worker (dd is 3) but she completely dismissed it and told me Nottinghamshire are an 'inclusion county' and 'don't do' statements unless the child is going to attend a SN school. She quite openly said that its because they are too expensive and time consuming. Sounds like total tripe to me but i've left the matter for the time being.

misscutandstick · 07/05/2009 12:21

Everyone tried putting me off, saying the same thing! went on about how long it would take and what a waste of time as they do the 'inclusion' thing. but once i said that i had applied and was going forward with it, they seemed to change a bit , and are now politely encouraging. The teachers were as bad as everyone else! The CPN, the OT, portage!

But i think that DS5 needs one, so im going to give it a good go - im expecting a fight!

Can i ask the initials of your portage woman?

lingle - the diagnostic/ assessment stuff would have to be completed for a statement.

to qualify that - not every child with a statement will have a diagnosis, but to get a statement they will have to have been assessed by the relevant professionals... iyswim...

statement of special educational need details the help that the child needs in the education setting (and which setting) - in order to get a statement there is a statutory assessment process carried out by the LEA, but they request reports from parents, current setting if appropriate, as well as every man and his (professional) dog that the child sees/ may need to see/ thought necessary by paed - so physio, OT, slt, social services, camhs, any as/asd outreach workers, specialist teacher advisors etc etc etc etc.

so you don't need a dx to get a statement, but if you aren't keen on assessment per se, it makes the whole process even more difficult...

assume it is the label rather than the recognition of actual difficulty you have declined? declining assessment would be tricksy from a stat assessment pov i think...

parent's report essentially is one of the reports looked at by the case officer. history from birth, developmental/ milestones/ current difficulties etc as well as providing a list of all the people that the dc currently sees (so that they can request up to date reports from them)

without a statement you are very much at the mercy of the education setting as to what support the dc will get. some schools are absolutely fine and manage to provide, but some struggle and will request ed psych and stat assess in any case.

W.H

....

meggymoosmum · 07/05/2009 12:31

Well she's from I.S but did the Portage summary. I guess its the same thing

jennybensmummy · 07/05/2009 12:43

meggymoosmum is your portage inclusion worker the same one as the person we both knows one?? i had her before we got onto ecap and i hated her if it is!

meggymoosmum · 07/05/2009 12:46

From what L and i discussed yesterday, YES!!!!!!!! (P.S - sorry i haven't replied to FB message yet )

meggymoosmum · 07/05/2009 12:47

I am awaiting our paed report (still, app in bloody Feb) - when that turns up our referal to ecap should go through. Thank god.

jennybensmummy · 07/05/2009 12:48

ha ha i thought so, did she tell you my issues with her etc!? its ok no rush, you fancy meeting up sometime next week? are you not on ecap yet?

jennybensmummy · 07/05/2009 12:49

we got on ecap before diagnosis, let me know when you do who your ecap worker is if her initials are lw good luck shes ok at times but also very hopeless at times too!!

jennybensmummy · 07/05/2009 12:49

oh and sorry misscutandstick for hijack!

meggymoosmum · 07/05/2009 12:51

No, she didn't go into much detail, but it seems we all have similar feelings about her

jennybensmummy · 07/05/2009 12:55

i think its a common view on her so i wouldnt worry!! i put a complaint in about her, dont think it did much though!! my nickname is equally inconspicuous!

misscutandstick · 07/05/2009 14:47

thats ok, no worries

we were turned down for Ecap! apparently DS5 is making 'some progress' - OH? where????

I know SALT hasnt done anything for him at all - hes still non-verbal, doesnt do instructions, and only signs because I taught him! The SALT has fobbed us off with an playworker 'assistant'. And whilst he enjoys portage, TBH i dont think its done that much for him.

will stop whinging now.

meggymoosmum · 07/05/2009 15:29

misscutandstick, thats not right is it

We have SALT once every 3 months, and i find it useless too. I've not been given any advice on things to do with her at home to improve her communication. All they do is ask me a load of questions and tell me they'll see us next time

misscutandstick · 07/05/2009 16:08

Thankyou MadWoman, I have a better clue as to what to put in my section now.
