Well as you all know the last weeks/months have been really hellish for us. Now while I am not saying the dark ages are totally over, we have had one major step in the right direction and seeing as how you all listen to me moan a lot I thought I shall share the good as well.

On some of your advice, DH and I invested bought in a weighted blanket without having ever seen one in the flesh after that horrific night of 6 hour long meltdown through the middle of the night. It was £100 from here - we got DS the trucks & trains pattern with royal blue fleece lining.

They took a long time to deliver and I suspect but am not sure might have forgot out order, because we sent an email chasing the delivery and the very next day they sent an email profusely apologising but saying they were making it that day and shipping it first thing the next morning (next day delivery which is what you pay for)

(By the way not having a moan about them, I am just telling you the full story!)

So it arrived and DS was excited about looking at it but not touching it. It slept on the floor next to his bed each night. Then gradually it moved to the foot of his bed. Then yesterday, on a whim, I just picked it up, and confidently lay it on top of him as if it were the most natural thing in the world. He sort of gasped, and then smiled, and said "I love my special blanket!" (that is its name) And kept talking about how great it was -

RESULT - He went from waking every hour then up for good anywhere from 2-6 am to sleeping straight through from 8-6 except waking up at 12 for a drink!!!! NOT BAD!!! The only thing at all that changed was this blanket. Everything else is the same. It was amazing. I just had to tell you as its the first whole nights sleep in as long as I can remember!

I know its early days, LOL well, today is just Day 2 but I had to say - BUY ONE!! They rock!

It is!!

He is asleep now as well, for a nap! Oh bliss!! The joys of having a child who sleeps... who knew?!?

CAN I PLEASE SAY A HUGE THANK YOU to all you MNers who told me about weighted blankets!!! It goes without saying that no doctor or HV or anyone told me, it was you lot!!! And it bloody worked!! I dont even care if it doesnt work every night I feel it will work most if not all nights and you know what that is good enough for me!

That's great news. Our OT said she'd managed to arrange for us to borrow a weighted blanket to see if it would work for ds but we haven't heard anything since so I will have to give her a ring. I'm getting very keen to try it now!

Our DS can not use a weighted blanket due to his heart condition but he has a weighted dog which just doesn't have the same effect. Borrowed a blanket, which did keep him calmer getting dressed but thats all. Didn't help with sleep etc. Another thing that helps although still yet to try, is a mummy sleeping bag.

hereidrawtheline · 14/03/2009 00:06

TinyC it is indeed a magnificent typo!!! Made me larf. I shall google balaclance balls and see about buying one.

devientenigma, what is a mummy sleeping bag?

lingle he is on to a hat trick!!! So far he is asleep, and went to sleep straight away! Will report back in the morning!! This will end up like the bird watchers log wont it!

Stardate 4756.42 DS sleeps again. Weighted blanket continues to weave its magic. MN hangs suspended wondering how long this can carry on, before the nocturnal child rears its head again.

hereidrawtheline good morning!, so did he sleep all night again ?

hereidrawtheline · 14/03/2009 09:53

hello! he slept right through the night!! Woke up at 6 so no drastic lie in but not up at 4 either and no wakings in between so I declare:

I'm so pleased to hear what a difference the blanket is making to you all - money well spent!

TinySocks · 15/03/2009 06:46

Well I've told DH about your success and he is now desperate to get one of these miracle blankets!!!!

devientenigma · 15/03/2009 07:38

HDTL, look at Argos at the sleeping bags. Some are called mummy sleeping bags, they kind of have a bit for your head also. Me personally don't think it would work as good as blanket but well worth trying for those who can't use the blanket medically.

hereidrawtheline · 15/03/2009 08:35

Last night was day 4 of sleeping straight through! From 8-6!

If any of you have a disability team social worker, it may be worth asking them if they'll fund it. Social Sservices bought J's after the OT lent us one and it worked well with J's sleep problems.

lingle · 15/03/2009 12:47

It's now as good as England V Germany Sept. 2001. Might have to rest my vocal chords for a while. Do hope it keeps working

quick questions ds1 seems to have a phobia about blankets will not allow one in his cot did anyone elses lo have this and did they grow out of it or was it a case of keep putting it on them. Also ds 1 seems to get very hot very quickly he currently sleeps in a bodysuit and growbag his rooms is about 20 degrees but when i check on him he is sweating ( his room cools down during the night) is the blanket very warm? Me thinks even if i could get ds1 to use blanket it would have to be in middle of winter with all windows open!!!
What does you ds wear in bed & does he have a sheet under wonder blanket or is it just blanket?
wow lots of questions but very interested in your miracle sleep cure!!

drlove8 · 15/03/2009 13:41

these blankets- who are they reccommended for? i mean, my ds2 has dyspraxia/dcd, and we are awaiting a dx for as/hfa. he sleeps well, but is a very early riser- anytime after 4.45am, does anyone know if one of these blankets might help him to sleep a little later?
