When it's not exactly echolalia

Ds1 repeats himself frequently. He will say whatever it is that he needs to say and then will repeat all or part of the sentence in a whisper. Is there a term for this? His pediatrician documented it as echolalia but as I understand it that is when a someone repeats something that someone else says.

DS4 does that, but at 100Db, and i counted today how many times and on average hes does it: between 5-8repeats for each conversation, and ive worked out that if i try and divert he has to start at the beginning again, but this time hes more flustered and louder!

Thanks for the feedback. I have not tried to divert but have asked him about it and brought it to his attention but that makes no difference.

tinyc, I was actually on that website before posting but everything I saw was about repeating other people. Ds1 only repeats himself.

Yes, that's the thing. He generates speech no problem. In fact he is extremely verbal. The first time he speaks it is in a perfectly normal voice and then whispers everything the second time.

DS2 repeats back things when he is doing familiar routines

Bath time: "No hair wash"

Bed time: "No light on, lamp on"

Changing his nappy after his 10th poo that day: "No pooing in nappy, poo on toilet "

Getting a drink: "Milk or juice"

I could go on and on.

I do this but not as a 'habit'. If I use any phrase that is slightly different to one I've used before, I'll repeat it to myself a lot. Partly because a new phrase is very entertaining (well, it often is for us ) and partly so I can memorise it.

morningsun · 07/03/2009 10:37

my ds does this but not all the time.He has had other phases of tics like eye blinking, throat clearing and humming while eating.Anyone's dc do this? Also had a stammer don't know if is related.

jabberwocky · 07/03/2009 15:15

Ds1 hums while writing and drawing (2 of his favorite activities). It can be fairly annoying but I've never tried to stop it.

jabber does your ds have a diagnosis of sn

jabberwocky · 07/03/2009 15:54

He has a diagnosis of Sensory Processing Disorder but I am trying to get a referral for him in order to rule out/diagnose Asperger's.

i was just wondering as my ds does exactly as you describe in your op,repeats himself in a whisper, however it isn't with every sentence, just sometimes.

jabberwocky · 07/03/2009 17:35

Yes, ds1 doesn't do it constantly but he does do it quite often. I need to watch and see if it occurs more when he is anxious, excited or under some sort of stress. My gut instinct tells me this is probably the case.

my ds would do it at the table,in a conversation. He doesn't do it if reading aloud. It was nearly all the time but now its settled down a bit.I don't know if he just liked doing it as a habit or it was a tic.It didn't bother me but the humming while eating was funny as he was chewing and humming at the same time!

jabberwocky · 07/03/2009 19:04

How old is your ds? Mine is 5.6 and it does seem a bit less frequent than a year ago.

OP posts:
morningsun · 09/03/2009 09:36

he's 7.3 now.I noticed yesterday at the table for sunday lunch he was whispering all the way thru the meal to himself!

hereidrawtheline · 09/03/2009 12:25

My DS does this (and classic echolallia) and also he does a running commentary on all events around him and recapping all conversations which can get very tiring. But he says the same sentences for the same events each day. So I guess that is more ritual. But he does do the repetition thing a lot too.

jabberwocky · 09/03/2009 15:08

I tried to watch as unobtrusively as possible this weekend and it seems ds1 does it mainly when he is absorbed in the topic. He will also pick up little tics like snapping his fingers or whistling.

jabber what are his behaviours that make you suspect AS?
Here When my ds was younger he also had a running commentary on all his activities i just thought that was becos he was very verbal and communicative~a good thing i would have thought.
In fact i missed that when he stopped doing it and he is quieter now.
