twocutedarlings · 31/01/2009 18:15

DD was 4 (almost 5 DX AS) we waited around 6ths for ados to be done but once it was she was dxd within 2mths.

staryeyed · 31/01/2009 18:21

Ds was diagnosed at 2.1. He displays all the classic symptoms and was diagnosed quickly.

misscutandstick · 31/01/2009 18:27

We first took DS5 to paed at 3mths for faultering growth, by 9mths he was discharged.

We went back when DS5 was 18mths for total lack of developement, and subsequent total lack of speech.

DS5 is currently 2.8yrs and we still have Dx, paed is doing blood tests (chromosome checks to start with, but thats going to take 9mths with the waiting list )... so basically we are still looking at another 9mths (DS5 will be at least 3.6) for a possible Dx, and even then we might not have one - even tho he has very many ASD traits.

bubblagirl · 31/01/2009 18:33

ds was observed from 2 and dx at 3 with HFA so it took a yr of observations before the official dx

choccynutter · 01/02/2009 14:51

my ds2 was 3 yrs but had to fight get it.

pagwatch · 01/02/2009 16:11

DS2 regressed at 18 months. We saw specialist Consultant Paed at 2 years and 3 months who said as we left "of course he is aitistic" and that was our diagnosis.
In the interim we had hearing test and ECG plus two visits to Community Paed who was considerably worse than useless.

Not very long but DS2's transformation from happy NT child to screaming, head butting ASD child did at least catch the NHS's eye...

DS1 was 7 when he was formally diagnosed with AS, although I thought there was a problem from the start and the school's nursery teacher brought in the SENCo the second week he was there (he was 3) as she was worried.

Although the system took ages to sort out the diagnosis (we went the NHS route and waited a loooong time for a multidisciplinary assessment) I have to say that he had fantastic support from the school from the moment they spotted a problem and that continued all the way through his school career (he passed his A levels last summer - something we never thought he'd be able to achieve).

He had a second multidisciplinary assessment at Great Ormond Street just before he started secondary school (we were worried about some other issues) and that happened much more quickly. We knew the ropes by that stage and asked our GP for a referral, rather than waiting for the ed psych/SENCo to organise things.

Unfortunately, getting a job in the current climate is going to be very tough for him

Mamazon · 02/02/2009 12:00

we were first told he was on the spectrum when he was 2.2
he is now 8 and we still only have a "he's on the spectrum" i have decided he just has George syndrome. its unique to him and made up of a bit of this and a bit of that and fits no particular box at all.

PeachyBAHonsPRSCertOnRequest · 02/02/2009 12:04

5.5 and 6.5

DS3 has been in the system since 3 (regressive though), ds1 dipped in and out between 2 and 5, really.

belcantwait · 02/02/2009 12:09

ds1 was 6 and we got his dx at first appt- he was obv quite a typical case lol! (this was after several appts with gps, hv, parenting gps etc- the moment he had his proper referral it went v quickly)
ds2 was 3 and had amonts worth of assessments and was then dx

DS was dxd as AS when he was 9 privately,he had been under CAMHS for a year and they def no to asd, then when we disagreed and had him asessed privately and sent the consultant the private dx,she changed her mind and endorsed it

DD had a multi asessment when she was 18mth and they said possible autism, nursery vehemently disagreed as did the Ed Psych,we got a dx for her a year later only for them to withdraw it a few days later following a "conversation" with the Ed Psych, we never got to the bottom of exactly what the conversation entailed as they all closed ranks on us,now she has been under another NHS authority for a year who say ASD "traits" and attention, hyperactivity difficulties,so we went back to the private psych and he dx,d her as PDD-NOS.
shes 5 in April.

Electra,I desperately need to reach you . Are you around? I am planning to go for private route and contacted autism consultants. Just would like to ask few things to you.

jennybensmummy · 29/04/2009 10:31

ben was 2.1yrs when the consultant told us yes he is autistic providing mri is normal as he was suspected as having been brain damaged by his father as a baby, the mri was normal, but before the mri results all the paperwork we got said he was autistic so i dunno what that was all about! The consultant who said autistic was the first time we saw anyone - he was very obviously autistic though!

Marne · 29/04/2009 13:45

Dd1 was 4.9 when she got her dx of AS, it took 1.5 years.

Waiting for a DX for dd2, she's 3.2, we have been told they don't want to dx her to early but at the moment is showing signs of HFA. She's been in the system for a year.

sc13 · 29/04/2009 15:15

DS was dx with ASD at 3 (yesterday, feel free to pat me on the back ), first referral 7 months ago

WetAugust · 29/04/2009 16:27

15

Statemented at 7 but misdiagnosed as EBD

Struggled without ASD support due to misdiagnosis leading to breakdown at 15

Sent to CAMHS and misdiagnosed by CAMHS Consulatnt Psychiatrist as having a serious mental illness

Paid £300 for private dx by Professor of developmental delay disorders. Dx'd Aspergers after 3 hours consultation.

FINALLY - correctly re-diagnosed by CAMHS (after waving private report under their noses).

Not a good experience so it's good to see other people's Dcs being dx'd at early ages.

daisy5678 · 29/04/2009 17:37

J was 'in the system' from 2 - everyone (including me) thought ADHD though. Consultant paed saw him at 2 and said probably ADHD but CAMHS were the only ones allowed to dx and didn't see under 5s. Eventually seen by CAMHS at 4.10 and dx'd ADHD at 5.5 by consultant psychiatrist. Seen by new consultant psychiatrist at 6.0 to trial medication for the ADHD and she immediately spotted the autism which had been being masked by the ADHD apparently, though the school immediately said they'd always known. ADOSd at 6.4 and dx made then.

HelensMelons · 29/04/2009 19:46

DS2 dx in Feb 07 aged 6. This was our second assessment - it was a slow process but professionals unsure if DS's difficulties were purely down to s&l.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 29/04/2009 19:51

We were told at 2 that ds1 definitely wasn't autistic because he was too happy and smiley and affectionate .

He was diagnosed aged 3 and 1 month.

He is severely autistic (still non-verbal aged 10).
