Tclanger - didn't realise you were getting grief from parents. That's so hard. Keep strong, your ds has every right to be where he is.

Lauriefairycake · 19/01/2009 13:29

Amber of course it's different, was only pointing out that the law on its own is ineffective without attitudes changing.

Unfortunately it's 2% of that 6% reported - so it's first of all 94% of rapes don't get reported and then the ones that do have a tiny chance of conviction.

Agree with Riven it should be treated as a hate crime.

amber32002 · 19/01/2009 13:43

Lauriefairycake, in that case the odds are about 1 in 833 for a rape case, and 1 in 60,000 for a disability bullying case.

72 times more chance of getting away with disability bullying than rape.

I do agree about the problems with the law.

MN have let loads of threads which begin with a premise which is raist or thought to be racist stand - on the grounds that it is a discussion.

I can completely see that people don't want to be constantly educating others, or feel obliged to, but I don't think discussion about issues can simply be barred.

Lots of posters have challenged the OP on the other thread, and although I doubt the OP will adjust her views, many other people will have had pause for thought along the way.

As an extrovert, the comments about extroverts were very pertinent t me and have been taken on board!

MillyR · 19/01/2009 14:04

Blu, I apologise for the extrovert comments. I was just angry about the thread and shouldn't have said that. I could have made the point about diversity in a less unpleasant way.

I don't think the super race thread should still be up though.

MmeLindt · 19/01/2009 14:12

I knew very little about the problems that people with SN face before I started MNetting. I knew almost nothing of the challenges that parents of children with SN have to overcome.

Not the challenges or problems of everyday life, the challenge of getting adequate care, facing prejudice and discrimination, the daily fight for wheelchairs, windows, schooling...

Posters such as 2shoes and Riven have educated me and many others, and while I can understand that you are weary of fighting so many battles on so many fronts, I am grateful for the insight you have given me.

The discussion on the "superrace" thread is one that is necessary. I would prefer to see it posted under an OP that is not upsetting but there have been some good points made.

That is not to say that MN HQ should not delete any post that crosses the line, as they would on a thread about racism.

saint2shoes · 19/01/2009 15:43

mn hq deleted my thread in site news, they still have not explained why. the super race thread is still there.
I think imo that proves where mn hhq stand.

YABU.

2Shoes, you know, as well as anybody, that there's some right tossers out here, in the big wide world and they have their opinions. So they bring their opinions on to Mumsnet and that gives you (us) the chance to blast them out of the water and re-educate them.

Nowt like a dose of home truth and someone elses reality and if we banned those threads, you (we) never get the chance to challenge and correct presumptions and perceptions.

Tbh, I think the discovery that your post is so bigoted that it is erased by impartial forum mods is a far better "educator" than anything the SN mums can say.

r3dh3d · 19/01/2009 15:57

'course, for that you need impartial forum mods.

saint2shoes · 19/01/2009 17:09

so it is still down to us to do mn hq's job then, we have to educate the $$$$$ and so the circle continues.
wouldn't it be better surely if the people who start threads like these, or post comments that are offensive, saw the thread/post deleted , wouldn't that give them the message, otherwise I fear mn will loose people in the end, as we be come more weary of argueing the toss on here,

OP posts:
TotalChaos · 19/01/2009 17:15

That's really not on your thread got pulled 2shoes if the superrace one wasn't. I posted in a perfectly pleasant manner on that thread, suggesting ante-natal testing could be a separate topic.

BennyAndJoon · 19/01/2009 17:16

what was the thread that you had deleted 2shoes? I missed it

saint2shoes · 19/01/2009 17:20

benny tbh it was on here for like 5 mins tops, I can't even remember what the title was now, it went so quick

OP posts:
TotalChaos · 19/01/2009 17:22

It was IIRC along the lines of wanting a separate section you could hide for anti-disabilist crap?

saint2shoes · 19/01/2009 17:26

it seems you are not allowed to discuss that!!

OP posts:
amber32002 · 19/01/2009 17:50

Hey, Asperger syndrome is not a real disability, don't 'y know, I'm now told on that thread. It's apparently just fashionable to call it one. Well, so much for my life experiences.

Ye heavens, as if we don't go through enough in life already...

BouncingTartan · 19/01/2009 17:59

I stopped posting on that thread because I was at some of the comments. I don't have any disabled children but I have dss with Asperger's (hence my example early on in the thread) and it horrifies me that some people could actually the world might be a better place without him and children like him. That makes me and

BouncingTartan · 19/01/2009 18:00

could actually think the world

5inthebed · 19/01/2009 18:17

I am torn between saying yes and no.

I do think the majority of MN are understanding towards disabled people, but there are those who want to be seen on MN and will say just about anything to get themselves noticed.

The world is full of people who are racist/ageist/sexist and discriminative towards disabled people, its just in RL they wouldnt normally voice their views with such a wide audience (unless you are that silly cow from the Mail)

troutpout · 19/01/2009 18:28

Wow...ds is 'in fashion'!...i'll tell him...i'm sure that will go right over his head impress him

LollipopViolet · 19/01/2009 19:29

I feel slightly sick reading that super race thread.
