Poo problems

DS has over the last week or so started having increasingly frequent poo accidents - usually in the evening. If this continues I will of course take him to the GP. But I wonder how/if it is possible to tell whether it's an overflow/constipation problem, or something completely different.

is it loose?

TotalChaos · 30/06/2008 21:52

this evening was very loose, other times it's been more solid. he's had a cold/cough/cataargh so I put it down to being slightly unwell up to now.

could well be constipation. I was suprised when dd's nurse once said she was constipated(dd not the nurse) when I thought she was the other way.
does he have trouble when he is not ill?

TotalChaos · 30/06/2008 21:56

no, not at all.

can a health pro tell just by feeling a tummy if a kid is constipated then?

not sure but i think they can.

Aefondkiss · 30/06/2008 22:50

I am having the opposite problem with ds, he just keeps trying to hold it in, is really awful, we took him to the doctor and she did an internal, which wasn't very nice, but over quickly.

there was a really informative thread about an mn'er whose dd was having problems, and it really opened my eyes to poo related issues... but what surprised me (tmi) was that even if there is constipation, softer poo can come out, overflow, not sure what the right way to describe it is...

my ds got two different medications, sena (iirc) and lactulose, which we weren't very keen to use. I hope you can find the right help for your ds TC.

TotalChaos · 30/06/2008 23:05

i saw that thread, and I wonder if that's what is going on with DS aefond.

dd has senna and lactulose. does keep it moving.

Hi TotalChaos! Also experence of longterm constipation and its treatment in this house . Would it help to list the gritty details?
Warning TMI!! dont read further if dont need to know!! 'Running through' poo tends to be very frequent, (a little at a time), somewhere between soft clay and paint in consistancy (not flaky and loose!) and sometimes smells sharp/acidic. Child is pretty uncomfortable - but dcs with asd don't always show their discomforts!
HTH but hasnt upset anyone!

TotalChaos · 01/07/2008 10:08

thanks for the description - found it very useful - it doesn't sound like DS's problems - DS's problem poos are more of once or twice an evening (always evening ) and of the explosive and OMG I didn't quite make it to the toilet in time variety, so not frequent or a little at a time.

sounds like a bug? reaction to something? I would go to the doc, I don't think they would do an internal because it doesn't sound like constipation, really hope your ds gets over this very soon.... they might want a sample.

My ds (8 years old, GDD & hypotonia) has always had 'runny or slimey' poo, which often escapes bit by bit into his pants. We have had our greatest success so far by putting him on 1 dose of Viridian Probiotic Powder per day, which we mix into his morning weetabix. The result is one perfectly formed poo per day, almost always in the toilet .

TotalChaos · 02/07/2008 21:36

sorry to update with such a delightful subject..... but last Friday, a horrible poo accident after eating yoghurt. Then all was fine till last night - with a slight leak prior to getting to the loo. I let DS have some of my thick hot chocolate yesterday, not sure if it's linked. And then 2 horrible runny poos (but fully in the lool this morning. So I'm starting to wonder if an original slight bug has left DS supersensitive????? Someone mentioned probiotics up above - can anyone recommend one that's suitable for a 4 year old? I'll take him down to the GP tomorrow as well, in case they want a sample, seeing as the poo saga has been going on for over a fortnight.

TClanger - guess what I'm going to say next re the milk/bowel stuff ................................

SNAP!!!!

DS used to have the most dreadful nappies on formula but because he had a very worrying start with jaundice etc, I was so grateful he was putting on any weight at all I didn't really persevere it. Then when he got to about 2.5, he had this weird addiction/intolerance thing going with milk - drinking 4 pints a day at one point, with dreadful nappies, So I completely cut back. I let him have milk at school or nursery, and the occasional glass when out, but virtually never at home.

This now seems to have evolved into some sort of gastro bug - he's had 7 bouts of watery you know what in 24 hours. And the night time ones are leaking out of a nappy (he's normally out of nappies, but I count this as exceptional circumstances).
