Ah, but this is all about courage and the chance for this lady to prove what she is capable of, both to herself and to her sponsors.

Her courage raises the bar for others and it resets the boundaries of what disabled people can achieve.

I wonder whether Dame Ellen would ever step into this lady's boat, suspend the use of her limbs for 12 weeks and complete the same task.

Lets be serious here Kerrymum = READ IT PROPERLY.
She is going to use her breath into and out of straws to work the electronic controls of the boat. Not blow the bloody sails fgs.
And she will be coming into shore every night, the longest she will be out for is 18 hours.
If she is quadriplegic I assume that she will already be well used to whatever she needs for her bladder and bowels.
Its not mad its fantastic and anyone able bodied who calls her mad is small minded imo.
If you had an accident that rendered you quadriplegic would you just give up and stay in your room 24/7?

she has two support teams but says she wants them to stay away from her as long as they can.

'but neither would I do something that put myself at considerable risk and disadvantage unless I had a death wish'

Well, clearly, you're not as brave as is this particularly lady.

But that's probably because you are able bodied so are not challenged in quite the same way.

Did you also view Dame Ellen's solo circumnavigation as reckless?

But using that logic, then anyone who faces every day is brave!

That's Dame Ellen MacArthur, BTW!

Yes, sailing is dangerous and risky. However, the point here is that both women took on solo challenges that pushed their abilities to the max. The fact that one is able bodied and the other is not, is irrelevant.

This lady lives local to me so is in the local paper alot. She has done this kind of thing before kerrymum and I am sure safety measures are put in place as they are for other people. Concern is slightly different from malice though, as I am sure you are aware.

I wish the woman well and hope she suceeds

good luck to her! sounds like she's got plenty of support/backup planned, like it's all been well thought through.

well said riven

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 17/06/2008 21:53

A great story - thanks for posting it. It is clear that Mrs Lister, the lady sailing is quite capable of having made her own decisions and has ensured she has all the necessary support in place so why not go for it? as the others have said, no more mad or reckless than any other solo sailers or mountain climbers.

Riven - can I ask where those 'Brave' quotes are from? they are the kind of thing I could do with to quote at varying people as and when needed!

Cantseesowhat · 18/06/2008 13:29

Excuse me! I'm visually impaired and I do lots of things that are "mad." I like to do these things and I am more careful than most "nrmals." Why do people always think that we're at more of a risk than others?

It just goes to show how ignorant some people are.
