To cut a long story short dd goes to after school singing club on a Tuesday after school. I pick her up at 4 so can pick ds up from school normal time as I usually pick him up earlier.
Anyway got chatting to some of my friends at ds's school and we ended up staying for about half an hour then went straight to pick up dd for 4 when the singing club finishes.
Anyway I got there about 4 and another mum came over and said your **'s mum aren't you? I said "yes why?". She said "Oh it's just that nobody realised that she went to singing club and up until 2 minutes ago she has been sitting in the medical room waiting for you. they have been ringing you at home, on your mobile and even rang ds's school. Well they were ringing the wrong mobile as I have a new one and have definitely given it to them.
Eventually about 5 minutes before the club finished someone realised that she should be in singing club. Poor little love was sitting in the medical room for nearly 50 minutes. She probably didn't know what was going on
I spoke to the teacher and asked what had happenend she said as she wasn't there this afternoon there was a confusion about were dd should be.
I am very upset and disappointed. Dd has a communication problem and propably didn't know what was goong on. When we got in the car she said she didn't like singing club and that she was sitting in her own in the medical room
When I got home there was a really snooty message left by the office staff "oh Mrs **, it is 3.45 and we were wondering what's happening rang back but there was no reply and left a message saying if anyone was there could they phone me back if not I'll speak to someone in the morning.
Do you think I am right to be angry as I don't like blowing things out of proportion. I am just upset that dd was made to sit on her own and must have felt v. scared and confused. Probably thought I was late picking her up.
I just needed to get that off my chest, thanks for listening.

Blossomhill - that is a terrible thing to happen. I would be very annoyed if that happened to any of mine and they are not SN. It must be worse for her esp as you say she has a communication problem.

winnie1 · 16/11/2004 17:37

I do think you have a right to be cross. Bloody cheek and poor dd.
A similar thing happened to a friend of mine recently but the snooty message was that friends ds had left the school premises so is no longer school responsibility. Df was 50 miles away working at the time. Df's ds has special needs and luckily had been in the wrong class although no one noticed for a double lesson!
I do think you should complain to school blossomhill and I do hope dd isn't put off singing lessons.

binkie · 16/11/2004 17:41

Yes of course that's dreadful - and all the more so because the school knows she has difficulties and obviously should know what her regular activities are. In the medical room!! (Share your fume a bit because ds was once left out of his tae kwon do club for a similar reason, though he got to go in the "late room" and read books (so he was happy).)

Our school posts lists of children signed up to the various clubs. That's one thing to ask for (as well as apology for the snootiness).

maddiemo · 16/11/2004 17:45

Yes, I would be angry. I would complain, dd must have been so confused by this and the last thing you want is to have her put off attending a club.

My ds3 attends an after school class, I do write a reminder in his contact book each week and the teacher has a board in the class where the collection arrangements for each child are wriiten for that day.

tamum · 16/11/2004 17:46

Your poor little dd. I would make a fuss simply because it will mean they are less likely to do it next time.

Thanks for all of your lovely, supportive messages I just think why is it alwasy me that has to pull them up about everything. This sort of thing shouldn't have happened. Dh is even more angry than I am and that's unheard of!!!!

Poor little mite. Yes I'd be bl**dy annoyed too for a number of reasons:

  1. Being left in a room by themselves for 50 minutes would be scary for any small child - SN or not.

  2. Knowing that dd has communication problems and is likely to be unable to give them information they should make sure they know where she's supposed to be.

  3. What if there had been been a genuine emergency and you hadn't known about it because no-one had bothered to update their records and contact details?

I hope dd doesn't get put off going to the club next week.

Chocol8 · 16/11/2004 18:14

Blossom - that is WELL out of order. Bloody cheek! Poor little Blossom too! I would definitely kick ass about this tomorrow at the first opportunity because this definitely doesn't wanna happen next week too.

Ooooh, it makes me really angry to think of your dd in the medical room all on her own with nothing to do and wondering what was happening.

Let us know how you get on and the response you get. Good luck and hugs xx

bundle · 16/11/2004 18:14

blossomhill, the poor little mite
once you start to get over the shock, why not suggest that you help to put together a new protocol to prevent such events from happening? it would be good if something positive came out of this. i'm sure the people involved feel terrible about it.

lou33 · 16/11/2004 18:29

Bh, I would be as angry as you. Poor thing, and poor you. Definitely have a few words about their procedures

Angeliz · 16/11/2004 18:32

I would be very angry too.
Hope your dd is o.k now

Let us know how you get on++

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 18:46

Thanks everyone again for all of your lovely messages. I just hate it when everything turns into a bl**dy battle
I will let you know how tomorrow goes!!!

Small child left UNSUPERVISED for 50 mins in a room all on her own. I'd be steaming.

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 20:14

PTMD - That is what dd said anyway. I will hopefully get the whole story tomorrow. Just feel like going to bed to be honest or downing a bottle of wine!!!

maomao · 16/11/2004 20:45

That must have been really awful for your dd --- and I'm really surprised that they did not update your contact information, too! Hope that dd is okay, and that all goes well tomorrow.

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 21:05

Thanks maomao . It's so weird because I know hwat you look like now!
It was really nice meeting you BTW

maomao · 16/11/2004 21:13

You too!

Davros · 16/11/2004 21:49

BH, I would be well peeeed off! Not just because of DD but because their assumption that YOU had forgotten her!! Don't you have a home/school book? It really is invaluable and you can remind them of things like this on the day. I also have a copy of my DS's out-of-school timetable in the front and up-to-date contact info, so its not just up to them to update info, I do it and its always in his book.

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 21:52

Hi Davros
Yes we do have a home/school book. To be honest she has been 3 times already and it was fine. I will write it in the book in future and thanks for the timetable idea that would be really good.
I am drinking a glass of wine at the moment as I feel so b*dy stresses!!!!!

OP posts:
blossomhill · 16/11/2004 21:53

You should of heard the message on the answer machine. Errr Mrs *** we were wondering what is happening as it's 3.45???? They even rang ds's school, what on earth will they think???

OP posts:
Davros · 16/11/2004 22:34

Oh, and don't forget to laminate that timetable! Let us know what happens, I keep thinking I should just drop things and wonder if I'm getting jaded? I used to really pursue things and not let people "get away with it", must have done it too often. I am about to have my second cup of tea, but you stick to the wine!

blossomhill · 16/11/2004 22:36

I know what you mean as I feel a bit like that. The problem when you have a child with a communication problem is that if you don't say anything who will?

OP posts:
blossomhill · 16/11/2004 22:37

Must buy a laminator as I was v. impressed with your laminated photos

OP posts:
emsiewill · 16/11/2004 22:40

blossomhill this has made me and . I can't bear to think of your dd sitting there not having a clue what was happening. It makes me feel like crying.

I'm getting very weary of schools, LEAs, after school clubs et al being cavalier with childrens' safety and security just because it's too much hard work to be organised.

Grrr
