This is the continuation of the thread for parents and carers of autistic children in Early Years and KS1. Most of us are parents of children in Reception or Year 1, but all welcome!

It doesn't seem to be a "fundamental" issue if you see what I mean - I think it's more classic 3yo control stuff

No, sounds like your more classic picky eater. He's likely to just grow out of it.

Sorry, I was agreeing with you if that wasn't clear...

Yes don't worry, it's clear!

openupmyeagereyes · 10/02/2021 15:29

danni what happened when you collected him? Who brought him out?

OP posts:
danni0509 · 10/02/2021 16:08

I picked him up at 3 and the specialist teacher and his class teacher came out, they didn’t say anything negative, ds just started on me because he said he was hungry. Then the head came out and said hi ds I just come to say hello to mummy then ds ran off and the head went back in without speaking as I was trying to stop ds from legging it any further.

The head never comes out to say hello Grin

openupmyeagereyes · 12/02/2021 11:25

danni how has this week been? Have they come up with reasons for you to collect ds early?

I hope everyone has had a good week.

We have had our worst week of sleep since ds was little I think. Today he’s been up from 2:30 again. There are a few reasons but ultimately the problem is he just refuses to go back to bed when he wakes up. Dh and I have been tag teaming so it could be worse but I bloody hope it settles down again soon. I’m dreaming of 4:30 at the moment and that says it all really.

We’ve given up on school work completely in the hope that a reset can help with sleep. I’ve also booked a free discovery call with a woman who works with autistic children and their families to see if she can help at all. I feel this is completely a behavioural issue rather than a sleep hygiene one. He can’t help waking but he forces himself to stay up even though he’s clearly tired. I’m hoping she can help us manage the refusal and get him to be more cooperative here. He’s far from demand avoidant most of the time but there are some areas where he just refuses to budge and this is one of them.

It may not help but I’m willing to throw money at the situation to try.

I’m even going to give him some melatonin tonight. It’s not really helped in the past but you never know.

2.30 open that’s a killer bless you.

I HATE when ds does all nighters. Does he realise it’s still the middle of the night? I don’t think ds does or if he does he doesn’t care, I show him out the window and say look ds the sky is still black it means you have to sleep but it doesn’t matter as once he’s awake he very rarely goes back to sleep.

I hope the melatonin works, ds is on ascomel liquid, he has 5mg but it’s not slow release so it’s just for settling him down not for night wakings, some nights it does chill him before bed other nights it’s like he’s having a syringe of water no idea why some nights it helps and other nights it doesn’t, your ds is on the tablet slow release isn’t he? We never got the option for ds, just get given the liquid.

He’s been ok at school they haven’t said otherwise, no complaints or anything.

I tell you what it’s nice though! 😂 he does 9.15am until 3pm! Peace and quiet 😍 he breaks up today but when he goes back a week on Monday i have his bedroom to paint (I’m doing him a space theme I bought the bits with his birthday money but haven’t had chance with him doing so little hours at school) so I can start doing all my jobs again that need doing.

You deffo need to apply for dla if you haven’t already, I know i mentioned it to you before but your ds is fully entitled to high rate especially with his night time marathons x

danni0509 · 12/02/2021 13:39

I still have no idea what the send manager said to them, she never got back to me and school never said a word about it, they have been fine with me not funny at all.

I know she rang them as she said right I’m going to ring xxxxxxx school right now.

Then next day he was back to full time just like that!

danni0509 · 12/02/2021 13:40

Oh and good luck with your phone call open! Pls share anything useful x

openupmyeagereyes · 12/02/2021 13:47

danni he absolutely knows it’s nighttime but he just doesn’t care.

I have just given him some Piriton as the GP mentioned it as something that made them sleepy, way back when I first talked to her about his sleep. With any luck he’ll have a nap, he needs one. I don’t think there will be any chance of him taking it again though, it’s pretty strong tasting stuff.

It would be interesting to know what the SEND person said, wouldn’t it? Whatever it was it’s done the job and fingers crossed he’s only there another half a term.

I don’t think I’ll get anything useful next week, we’ll have to pay for any advice I expect. If we go ahead with it I’ll share what I can.

Blimey @openupmyeagereyes I hope you get some proper sleep soon. How did the piriton help?
@danni0509 how interesting, I wonder what the la said too...hmm. Well done!
We're pottering along, half term next week and I have the week off too, so might try and go for some walks or something! DS' hobby is maths so probably do lots of that! I try so hard to set up play invites with his wooden toys and all that but he just loves times tables, bless him. Bit worried about the change in routine but will see how we go. DH and I are getting a take out for valentines day weekend tonight, which I am looking forward to way too much!! Although I'm not usually down from DS' bedtime until 9pm these days so it'll be a wait!

openupmyeagereyes · 13/02/2021 10:43

MrsDuBeke enjoy your valentines meal. I hope the half term change of routine goes smoothly.

The Piriton did nothing though in truth he didn’t have a full spoonful as he wasn’t keen. He just sat there looking sleepy.

We had an epic meltdown for an hour and a half before bed. Up at 4 today, an improvement on 2:30 at least.

If any of you ladies receive carers allowance, make sure your gp is aware you are an unpaid carer as you come in to group 6 for the vaccine, I let my gp know this morning (I very rarely go to the drs and had never made them aware) and I am on the list to go in during the next 4 weeks.

Well, they emailed me back to say I was on the list already for the next round, which made me think do I have an underlying health condition I’m not aware of.

I’m obese but not morbidly so, I also have psoriasis but not on any immunosuppressants so don’t think the qualifying route was either of those.

danni0509 · 15/02/2021 20:44

Hope ds has been sleeping a bit better open?

I’ve had a right day with ds and his controlling. Thank god he’s asleep!

He’s done my head in badly today.
