Positive stories of ADHD treatment?

DS (6) has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. We are hopefully about to start treatment with medication and behavioural therapy. I swing between being wildly optimistic that medication will solve our problems and despondent that it will just create a whole new set of problems when we deal with side effects.

We are not in the UK so even getting his diagnosis recognised here and getting the prescription medication is a big hurdle.

He's doing school in his second language and is really struggling with reading and writing. I constantly wonder whether to pull him out and send him to an international school, which is in English. I've just been told that he will most likely be told to repeat this year as he's made no progress. He's a bit more on the attention deficit side than the hyperactive side, but he can be very impulsive and a bit too in-your-face.

In my weak moments I just see him floundering through the system forever and never leading a really fulfilling life.

I suppose I just need to hear some positive stories about children who have struggled with ADHD but have improved with treatment. Thanks

We also sadly had a seizure on Friday, after three weeks on methylphenidate.

Oh that's a shame mee
We're seeing the neurologist this week by coincidence so hopefully an increased dose of Epilim will do the trick.

Fingers crossed DrS.

Thanks for all the replies to this thread. We have now started medication so I am going to be updating the ADHD medication thread as I think it would be more useful....

Hi! Having read through this thread. I wondering if anyone has had the same problems?
My son who’s 7 nearly 8 has been diagnosed with adhd recently ( I’ve known for years) he was put on Medikinet XL moderate release capsule 10mg. I didn’t notice much change but he was a bit grumpy! I put this down to being tired and it being time for the summer holidays! He recently got put up to 20mg to try and see more change in him. However !!! He’s so depressive, emotional, tearful etc telling me he wants to move away/die etc etc!! This is unlike his personality, everyone says he’s the happiest, most pleasant, fun loving little boy going. It’s been heartbreaking to see and made me feel so guilty for putting him on medication. The doctor has told me to stop immediately and to try quick release of 5mg in the morning then again at lunch and then again in the afternoon if he needs it. I’m scared to try anything now! As much as I know it’s not an over night fix. I really hoped he’d be fine and have a noticeable change on the first medication and if anything it’s made him even worse. He massively struggles to concentrate at school and on any daily task really and is so hyper so he does really need some medication after years of behavioural therapy and not a lot or change :(

I have been using Mediknet XL with my 8 year old, recently diagnosed. He is on 30mg. It has made a world of difference to our home life and school. School is still a challenge as he has ASD.

Sometimes at the weekend I don't use it (but usually regret my decision by about lunchtime!!). He does struggle with his appetite, but I just make sure he has a good breakfast, then he eats constantly from about 4-8pm.

He is totally himself, just him on a good day. No weird personality side effects. He can get a bit hyper as he is coming off the medication, so I reserve screen time for around 5-6pm and that gets us over the hump.

There was no doubt in my mind about using medication. Life was so hard pre medication. It is a real game changer.

Oh wow! 2 years!! I’m not sure I can last that long - 2 months has been bad enough.
I’ve got a bad feeling it’s going to be a long process of possible no positive result. I just expected him to take the first medication and all the troubles would go away! I guess I was wrong. What others have you tried?
