There is a rather annoying assumption (widely held by the public, both those with disabilities and those without!!!) that all disabled kids have access to a motability vehicle or get mobility passes for public transport.

This is not true, some of us truly struggle, really needing to use mobility spaces or desperately needing mobility passes. And because of blatant discrimination in the DLA rules, (which makes it harder for those with neuro disabilities to get mobility passes/vehicles)....we dont get this help!

Just because it may be PHYSICALLY possible to get about (and thus technically be able to walk from a non-disabled parking spot)....doesnt mean its safe for the child to do so either for their own safety or for others safety.

Mine are happy to dart off, in a fraction of a second, slamming car doors into people, jumping on cars, running in front of cars, without a moments thought, (their mental 'stopping mechanism' doesnt work) and they are getting quicker than me!

There is an imaginary 'hiearchy' of disability, with wheelchair bound war veterans at the top and kids with things like ADHD at the bottom.

Leilel
my asd son nearly got run over by a woman in a mobility chair thingy the other day. When he saw her driving at him in the shopping precinct he just froze and clamped his hands over his ears. She shouted that he should get out of her way because she was disabled...

Off subject a bit... I bumped into a 'friend' at school as we were in the middle of trying to find out the extent of DS's difficulties and had just been at several meetings where words like "profound" and "global" and "severe" had been bandied about. This friend asked what was going on and I gave her a brief update of the last two months. After a long silence " ah well you have lost so much weight you look fantastic"
see - you must never think the glass is half empty

ahhh pagwatch she was trying to cheer you up!

One of my friends rang me up to tell me I was looking slimmer - cheered me up for hours - then realised she hasn't seen me for months!

pagwatch, further to what you were saying about mobability scooters and (a minority) of selfish people who ride them....

Ive seen them used as 'excuses' for bad manners, queue jumping, and blocking pedestrian pathways forcing mums with buggies and small kids (and me with my 2 disabled kids), to have to walk dangerously in the road.

I have to use disabled toilet if im out with the boys (if they use 'normal' toilets they tend to trash them and climb over and under the cubicles, set off all the taps and driers etc etc). One time as i exited the disabled toilet with the kids a man in a wheelchair started having a right go at me: in amongst the swear words that poured out of his gob, in front of my children, he shouted "this is for disabled people!" I shouted back at him in a much louder voice "these are disabled people". at least that shut him up, what an asshole! I was really

leilel,
i understand what you're sayin about disabled loos, i have a daughter who is wheelchair bound and so have to use disabled loos .
but umfortunatly the dis loos do get soo missused by peeps who cant be bothered queueing in other loos, peeps with toddlers, mums who sling sh**y nappies on floor after changing it does make me sooo annoyed because my girl doesnt have the option to use both loos she cant get into the 'normal' ones.
im not condoning this chaps behaviour but i do think that many elderly peeps are generally not very tolerant of young peeps today.
i trust your son/daughter didnt trash the disabled loos though like so many others?.
That said i believe all disabled kids can be hard work at times whether it be physical or otherwise.

Leilel · 09/07/2007 16:51

salsmum, no they didnt trash the disabled loos. they are kids who need non-stop constant watching over. So if im standing over them reminding them what it is they are supposed to be doing. then they use the toilet with less hassles. If they go into the 'normal' loos, and go into cubicles its a big 'flashpoint' for both of them.

I am glad that you are understanding of the unique problems faced by kids who are not immediately obviously identifiable as 'disabled'. Many arent
