Proud gush - had our best day out ever with our little walker!

To celebrate Lottie not using hr frame anymore (they stopped using it in school this week) we took her and DD2 to the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum.

It was just fab to have both girls running around the NHM, Lottie deciding which way we were going, Eve really loving every single glass cabinet displaying all the different animals etc. It was just so great.

Then onto the science museum where we have been about 27 times with Lottie but she's never been able to walk round and enjoy things her way before, she's always been on her bum or in our arms. It was so, so lovely watching her just powering her way around, arms flapping, huge grin, shouting to us "come on, dis way"!

And on the way out she had an icecream in one hand and she walked the whole way, the whole length from the lifts through the space bit to the main doors, people parting to make way for her

D and I just kept looking at each other, smiling and shaking our heads in disbelief, and then back to our little walker, steaming on ahead!

When we got home and the car pulled up alongside the house she said 'busy day mummy, busy day"!!!!!!!!

Yeah a busy, great day
At last

That's lovely.
Have followed the tale closely and crossed fingers for you TC.
Thank God you are there.
Must be a huge weight (quite literally) off your minds.

As an aside, found it rather unusual.I work/have worked with many children with DS but haven't noticed particular mobility issues. Is/was there an explanation?

GreenandBlackOtter · 25/03/2007 21:15

was her walking just delayed then TEECEE?

I am soo soo proud with you and her for Lottie achievement ...glas the day was such fun!

TeeCee · 25/03/2007 21:17

No, no particular reson ever given to me.
Just one of those things really. She was also a bum shuffler so that didn't help and then it got later and later and confidence, or lack of it came into it, just not having the strength in her legs, being scared of falling and generally really not liking it. To see her walk now you can see how hard it is for her. She doesn't walk 'normally'. When we used to make her stand against the bath her legs used to tremble under the strain, bless her. We still have a long way to go but we are so, so getting there, finally.

Her having DS and not walking isn't a unique thing. Some children with DS just walk really late, not the majority of children with DS, but it does happen.

Oh fab

TeeCee · 28/03/2007 12:48

I have hormones coursing through my veins but am so emotional at how lovely it is to read your messages and feel how happy you are for us.
Really, honestly, thanks, it's so nice

We stupidly didn't have a camera with us but we have the Easter Egg hunt at D's family coming up. Lottie has never been able to join in as it's a huge lawn and grounds they have and she's had to be carried around in bits by people who struggle to carry her. But this year she'll be able to find her own eggs with all the other kids and her cousins etc. I am so excited about that and I'll be sure to get a picture of her steaming along some point during the day and I'll add it to my profile pics.

I just bubble over when I read about Lottie and her adventures. Bless her with her 'busy day, Mummy, busy day'.

I'll be in Sheringham for at least one day over Easter, and i will never again walk on Sheringham beach without picturing Lottie clutching her pebble to throw in the sea.

(and TeeCee - DS has learned to ride his bike without stabilisers...it's hard for him because of wonky mechanics, but he has done it!)

lourobert · 28/03/2007 19:47
