Went to wheelchair clinic this morning and explained that DS is starting to realise that he has disablities and feels this a baby in the buggy, I thought they would look at him in the buggy and say he is fine in it, but they didn't even get the buggy opened up, just measured him up and brought in a Kids Active wheelchair, the first one was too big (12x12) so he has a 10x10, which he loves, and he was wheeling it around the room like a pro....
He seems happier with it, and he can't wait to use it, he has a school trip to the seaside in 10 days and the school want him to bring it as it will be a long day for him, I am going too as I think they will need me...

Great news mieow. I would also go on the trip, it'll be fun and you can really see how he gets on. Sounds like he's very happy

mrsforgetful · 22/04/2004 21:22

that was a great suprise for you! It's great when you don't have to battle to get what is needed!

lou33 · 22/04/2004 22:48

Hi Mieow, great that you got what you wanted . I posted a similar thing the other day, called Blub!. It's a bittersweet moment isn't it? Ds2 won't be getting his for a few more weeks yet though.

RexandBen · 23/04/2004 13:59

congratulations mieow!

mieow · 23/04/2004 17:02

Well, he rode to school in the wheelchair, normally I drive him in as, although the school is only a 5-10 minutes for me, it takes him a lot longer, but he wanted to walk (well me walk ) and loved it, he tried to whell it himslef but kept going toward the kneb so I pushed him.... lets see if he becomes lazy....

what i love is that he got it straight away- no having to wait for it to be modified etc!

Before long he'll be whizzing around and you'll need a kiddiboard attatched so you can catch a ride!

i listened to a radio programme the other week wher kids get to go to a 'wheelchair driving school' and they are taught how to get up the kerbs etc...its a fun place and their aim is that before they get to the teenage years that they are totally independant in controling the wheelchair.

Before that programme i was ignorant to the difficaulties the child faces as my sons are physically able.

hope he has a great weekend- the weather looks graet so should get to really master it!

coppertop · 23/04/2004 22:03

Congratulations Mieow.

Well you see, DS is quite able, considering just how tight his legs actually are, but he tires very easily and we were using the Major buggy quite a bit still, and he was becoming aware of it, telling me "I'm not a BABY!!!" when I asked if he wanted his buggy out the car, then 20 minutes later asking for the buggy as he was shattered... so he only needed the basic wheelchair, which Brian (the wheelchair bloke) adjusted straight away for DS while we were there and showed DS how to use it properally. We have a very ggod wheelchair clinic here, were given the Majors straight away for DS and DD1, they ordered me a double buggy (at the cost of £500!!!) but I had to return it as it was HUGE!! and when DD1's major wheel broken they sent out someone with a loan buggy, then delivered a brand new one the following week.....
I can't fault them really....

Can I just borrow this thread to have a rant?

We started the process of getting ds2 a wheelchair in February, took ages to get anyone to even call me back. Finally in april they came out to assess him, tried one out etc, and all was fine and dandy. They ordered to contoured cushion for his seat, and said that and wheelchair would be about 6-8 weeks. Well now it's the end of june, and am being told different things every time i call. Firstly they had a chair in stock, but had to wait for the cushion, then they had to send a chair to be reconditioned, THEN they decided it was too dear to recondition it so ordered a new one. Now they say they are still waiting for it to come from the supplier, and will be at least another two weeks! Am so pissed off. Not feeling great today anyway, but this is crap.

Thanks for letting me rant.

Fio2 · 29/06/2004 16:41

thats great mieowSmile

Lou Sad is this from wheelchair services? I know when dd had her major buggy ordered it was going to take 3 months or something stupid and it all to do with funding of course. Very Angry angry on your behalf

lou33 · 29/06/2004 16:42

Yes Fio I didn't have to wait hardly any time for the major, but I feel really let down by them over this.

coppertop · 29/06/2004 16:52

on your behalf, Lou. How can they possibly justify making a young child wait months for a wheelchair???

Sending a virtual kick up the @rse in their general direction.

Thomcat · 29/06/2004 17:21

When this title came up I nearly peed my pants! I thought, YEAHHHHH how funny after talking about it last night it arrived today, but then saw the red angry faces and realised i was wrong. So sorry you're still waiting mate

lou33 · 29/06/2004 18:17

I know I know. It's driving me mad, but what can I do really? They keep apologising , but that doesn't help. I know it comes from outside, but ffs they need to do some arsekicking

kalex · 29/06/2004 18:20

LOU33

Openied this expecting it to be you. very disappointed that still you are without

have you been to your MP.

Mieow, delighted 4 you and ds

Easy · 29/06/2004 18:21

Lou, is there nowhere you can get short-term (or long-term) loan or rental of a chair that might help in the meantime.

If they now have the cusion, it might fit a rented chair pro-tem.

Sorry if you've already explored this possibility

lou33 · 29/06/2004 18:24

They don't have any small enough . He's only teeny.

Blu · 29/06/2004 19:17

Oh Lou.....
(words fail me)
So sorry. hassle after hassle after hassle. It doesn't make it easier to deal with, does it?
