So which kind of SEN parent are you? A Settler, Prospector or Pioneer?

Thanks to Ugger for pointing this out!

Haven't managed to download it yet (dodgy internet connection). But I can tell you without looking. I'm a tired and weary SEN parent.

StarlightMcKenzie · 01/05/2014 21:21

Who do parents listen to when making decisions about their children with SEN?

41% School
25% Own Research
16% Health Professionals
8% Social Care
4% SEN Team
3% Other Parents

Just Shock they actually wrote it down like this for public viewing. Its actually quite refreshing to get to read what LAs think and plan and talk about. Its at least honest, and makes me realise how often we don't get to read it like this but have it dressed up in jargon intended to fob us off. No doubt they will be appointing a transport 'champion' to help clueless over emotional parents understand the benefits and opportunities of dumping kids in mainstream, ditching statements and forcing closure of special schools because they are 4 miles drive away. Anyone for a 'free' bus pass?

StarlightMcKenzie · 01/05/2014 22:18

I wonder how much they paid these Consultants to come up with gems like this?

'To make a real step change, the council should take a bolder approach to reducing the number of statemented children, using the Single Educational and Health Care Plan as an opportunity.'

OP posts:
StarlightMcKenzie · 01/05/2014 22:19

And this:

'If you reduced your SEN numbers in line with statistical neighbours your financial target can be exceeded'

Excellent stuff.

Their going to appoint ITT trainers!?

"To make a real step change the council should take a bolder approach in reducing the number of statemented children, using the Single Education Health and Care Plan as an opportunity"

Sad

I mean it's not as if we didn't know, but to see it written in black and white like that is pretty shocking

Shouldn't think that PDF will be on their website for long Grin

StarlightMcKenzie · 01/05/2014 22:39

Well what is it called?

If it disappears we can do a FOI for it.

OP posts:
Levantine · 01/05/2014 22:41

It's by iMPOWER

Home to school special educational needs and or disability transport demand management review

I can't open it - has it gone already?

StarlightMcKenzie · 01/05/2014 22:53

And use the introduction of EHCP to get rid of the statutory duty towards some kids.

OP posts:
StarlightMcKenzie · 01/05/2014 22:54

No. It's still there.

AgnesDiPesto · 01/05/2014 22:55

They probably know most MLD kids will last 2 years in mainstream max and then a significant % be forced to HE thereby disappearing from the budget completely.

Doc is downloadable so can copy it and put it on another website :)

ouryve · 01/05/2014 23:07

It's not downloading for me, but I've encountered the concept before. Highly patronising, at best.

ouryve · 01/05/2014 23:10

"values modes" apparently Hmm

StarlightMcKenzie · 01/05/2014 23:10

Agnes That document is similar to the types of things the company worked for used to produce. I can tell you with certainty that they haven't thought through to the fact that the kids will fall out in couple of years to be HE.

I also suspect that if they ever worked that out, they'd also most likely be stupid enough to have included in the document.

OP posts:
AgnesDiPesto · 01/05/2014 23:11

True they would!
Think you tweeters might have some fun tomorrow.

StarlightMcKenzie · 01/05/2014 23:14

Yes. Interestingly they found that parents of children with SEN were predominately 'pioneers' which meant open-minded, adaptable to change, outcome-focused and cared very little what others thought of them. They also understand and appreciate good value.

I wonder if that is how they develop as a result of their experiences? I think it highly unlikely that being that way predisposes them to have a child with a disability.

They report that the fact parents are 'pioneers' is good news for implementing changes, especially positive changes, even if they cost less ultimately. They also report that out of these parents, only 4% listen to anything the SEN Team has to say.

Which can only mean one thing really. Sack the SEN team and let the parents run the department. That should be the conclusion ultimately.

This is where I saw it - it was tweeted around. Love google, for all its evils. Thanks for that quite, starlight!
