A morning in A+E with Mini Hazey and a sprained ankle.

Ds fell this morning, and was reluctant to stand on his foot afterwards, I put an ice pack on it, and put him in the buggy for the school run. When we got home he wouldn't stand on it. I left the room to get a drink and heard him crying, when I came back in he had tried to get off the sofa and had collapsed on the floor.

I took him to A+E and waited for an age, dr deemed an xray unnecessary and said it was a sprain, try to keep him off it and give him regular ibuprofen. She tried to put some tubular grippy bandage on (ha ha ha ha - like trying to get a sock on a squid tentacle - ds was having none of it)) and we came home.

Poor ds is curled up asleep on my lap, I felt like a bit of a tit with this dr, because, you know it's 'just a sprain'. But it is so hard when your little boy can't tell you if it hurts, in fact because of his wonky pain receptors he can't seem to work out why he can't stand on it, and he forgets that he can't stand on it, so every time he tries to get up he falls over.

Feeling very crappy after a loooong morning.

Hazey read your post in g&c your poor baby been though the wars . Hope he's home tonight and you manage to get some sleep . Your poor girls and the upheaval in night . Try and get yourself some rest and sleep , no doubt you will need it , following all yesterday's trauma.

I'm really shocked they didn't x ray, no doctor can diagnose 'just a sprain' just by looking. In fact myself, several nurses, a doctor and a radiologist were all convinced dds broken leg was just a sprain until the xray showed a complete spiral fracture of the tibia.

Keep an eye in him and being him back if he can't weight bear within a day or so.

Lots of love and hugs to poor mini Hazey x

Oh, And massive sympathy on dealing with a wiggly non compliant boy btw, Ds2 trapped his thumb in a french door when he was around 2 and had to be xrayed.... Not a fun experience as he was not a willing participant, they didn't even attempt to bandage it after we got the all clear as he was freaking out so much

Hi hazey how are things this morning , is the little man any better . Did you manage any rest last night

hazeyjane · 21/03/2014 10:02

Fortunately his physio is now involved with his leg, although he is walking a lot better today - there is still a wobbliness and she is concerned that if he is walking in an awkward way he will put strain on his knee and his pelvis, which is very loose anyway. She has emailed the orthopaedic dept at the hospital.

Unfortunately the latest concern is his chest, he was up all night with a croupy sounding cough (I think? One thing my dcs have never had is croup!) It sounds like a barking seal, and every time he does it it seems as though he is going to throw up, and he gets very upset. I had the humidifier going, put the head of his profiling bed right up and sat up next to him.

We have had a pretty good year with ds and illness, and suddenly everything has come in this one week. I realised that I had got out of my 'hospital standby' mode, when I checked through my ready packed hospital bag! Anyway that is all ready to go if necessary (which hopefully means it won't be necessary!).

I worry about the girls, because although they enjoy the drama of it, I know they worry (although dd2 did tell me yesterday that she quite likes it when ds is ill because he doesn't scream so much!) It is hard to be distracted and give them attention, and they are so good with ds, and patient with it all. Dh is going to take them to the cinema as a treat on Saturday.

Right, hopefully ds is going to go to sleep in a minute and I can have 40 winks! Thankyou lovely geeseSmile

How's the gorgeous mini hazey today?

hazeyjane · 22/03/2014 13:26

Hello Autumnsmum, thankyou for asking. He is hot, full of snot and thoroughly grumpy, shrieking at everyone who comes near him (except for me, who he clinging to koala stylee).

Still gorgeous though....and distinctly less screechy when asleep.

Strangely he only got into his taggies after his obsession for having labels chopped out of clothes - labels all in the wrong place I guess! He also loves ribbon, twiddling it between his fingers and rolling it up, a big treat for him is when we go to the yarn shop and buy a metre of black ribbon. Strange boy!

Dh is taking the girls out to get a treat from Hell (ie ToysrUs) so that i can have a sleep.....heaven.

autumnsmum · 23/03/2014 10:38

Hope mini hazey is feeling better and you both got some sleep

hazeyjane · 23/03/2014 19:15

He has been much better today (after another awful night) still full of snot and a horrible cough, so I have been busy with the chest physio, but happier.

Still walking wonkily and wanting to be carried a lot - so will call physio tomorrow and speak to gp.

Hope it goes well with gp and physio today take care

hazeyjane · 25/03/2014 13:55

Have just had a call from the orthopaedics dept at hospital to say they will squeeze ds in at 10 tomorrow, as his physio is concerned that he is still walking in a wonky way (well even wonkier than normal - which is pretty wonky)and that he is unable to climb up the stairs and is wanting to be carried a lot more than is normal.

youarewinning · 25/03/2014 13:58

Oh no hazey I hope it turns out to be nothing serious.
