SN section in Education?

There's a thread in Site Stuff querying why there's a separate SEN section in Education when this section gets much more traffic. If anyone has any thoughts on it, it would probably be helpful to get some input - it's here - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/1953649-Why-is-there-a-separate-section-for-special-needs-in-Education?msgid=44069097#44069097

Because many people who post in Education and don't have a child with SENs would not have a clue what we were going through and I forsee some nasty battles breaking out Sad

nennypops · 03/01/2014 20:59

When I first ventured onto this site, I naturally looked in the Education section for SEN stuff and was puzzled that there was so little - until I saw the helpful bumped post directing people down here. The OP suggests that the SEN section could be on the list immediately below Education, which could be an idea. It does seem illogical having two different sections for SEN.

This has been debated before nenny It was why we started the thread to direct people over here if they wanted to come.

We have been bumping the thread for ages!

Wet is right though many people on the Education boards really have no idea about SN's we are much safer here.

I agree Polter. SN has too many redundant sections. Education and well-being are so closely interwined it's impossible to separate them in respect of children with disabilities.

Getting the right educational package is key to everything.

I'd have every SN related thread in a reduced topic SN section.

Ineedmorepatience · 03/01/2014 22:03

We did try to get it reduced before if anyone remembers but someone said SN's and SEN were different and couldnt be together Confused.

I know they are different but they so often go hand in hand but at the time I didnt feel like I had any clout to argue. I still dont tbh.

I do feel sorry for those that post on the quiet boards and dont get the help/advise that they might be desperate for Sad

Ineedmorepatience · 03/01/2014 22:03

Sorry for the spellings Blush

wetaugust · 03/01/2014 22:09

Yes, I was the one who asked MNHQ a year or so ago if they could reduce the number of sections. If I remember correctly they opened a debate about it - then everything went quiet again. I think the current set up with SN Chat and SN Children and SEN is absolute bonkers.

One section - Special Needs is all that's required.

Ineedmorepatience · 03/01/2014 22:16

Polter

Your suggestion would be OK if people were disciplined or even understood the differences e.g. that Chat threads disappear - but they don't.

A quick look at SN Childrena nd SN Chat and it's hard to understand why someoe's made the choice to post in which section.

Firm believer in KISS

hazeyjane · 03/01/2014 23:02

Polter can i report your thread to MNHQ, it seems like a sensible way to divide the section, imo.

hazeyjane · 03/01/2014 23:03

oops, report your post, not thread!

God, I'm rubbish - I agree with you, zzzzz and you, polter! Not sure what would be best.

Personally I hardly use the term special needs at all any more, ds is disabled. But I completely see what you are saying, polter, and it would be shae to alienate those people who are at that shaky point.

I prefer disabled. I also prefer posters to raise issues if they have them and not go spouting nonsense that they can't back up.

I dunno. It's not true but 1 or 2 posters have some motivation for posting what they do. It coukd either be perception, guilt or just nastiness driving it. There are all kinds of folk out there.

i have had a bit of a run-in with one of the less positive posters on that thread about 14 months ago about nothing related to SN, so maybe the purpose of the post was nothing more than fulfilling a personal vendetta. Maybe being caught bullying quite blatently has led to projection. Who knows?!

The reason you begin with the end of the word is so that she is able to 'complete' and move on iyswim.
