Just arrived home after a lovely week in Weymouth and have opened a letter from SS saying that they have received a complaint concerning the children making noise in the early hours and the children being shouted at. I am furious - DS2 is ASD and doesnt sleep - he also shares a bedroom with DS1 and likes to cause havoc in the early hours. Not so far been a problem as my neighbour had been away for 12 months, but now on her return she does this - we have been neighbours for over 10 year FGS why couldnt she have said something to me!!!

An extra pair of hands would be great - i will definately look into that the SW never mentioned it to me so I will get back on to her. It is really annoying that the most help I have received so far has come from advice off MN and not the people who are supposed to belp.

Oh god everything I've ever learned has been from other parents......

Yep direct payments can be used to help you, and siblings, it doesn't have to be respite.

Brilliant, thank goodness for MN!

You have to be very careful how you express things though...... We have a very good local dps support service who help a lot.

I found the DLA form hard enough lol

JIMJAMS - is that you? it is soo good to see you back. an i butt in and ask what are direct payments? ( my SW experiance was in youth offending) whenever i have asked for SS invovment i get a visit then a letter saying im a fab mum and dont need help. grr.

i would love to find some funding for DS to join some sort of summer project...even if he cant5 do it until next year if its to late now. good to get the ball rolling.

see your advice really is needed here JJ so dont bugger off again.

JJ2 - my SW is really rubbish - do I have to go through her for the Direct Payments or could my HV help - she is usually quite good and my SENCO is amazing.

I have spoken to Social Services today and they have closed the case. They have spoken to my Health Visitio and Social Worker and feel that there is no problem at all and we are managing very well. Relieved but still upset this has happened!

Glad its sorted. You do have to apply through SS for dps - there may be a specific team, or you may go through your SW.

DP's are given after a care assessment to allow you to make your own arrangements. In ds1's case they calculated how much they would have spent on respite and playschemes (if there were any) and translated that into hours- so we get 8 hours a week during school terms, 15 hours a week during school holidays (although I save up half my school term help for holidays).
There are some rules as to what you can spend the money on. You can't use it to buy in services that SS would usually provide direct. The main use is expected to be for a personal assistant and you may have to get permission to use it for something else.

I have made an appointment to see SW on Friday to set the ball rolling. Anything to make life a little easier

so could i ask for it to pay for a specialist childminder? its just that i really worry that DD is missing out on so much because there are things i just cant get to because of ds.

would loev to take her to a toddler group or something knowing that ds was properly cared for.

Jimjams2 · 24/07/2006 22:51

Yep- Ds1 goes to a specialist childminder quite frequently (hi goosey ) and we take the other 2 out somewhere. In the care asssessment I made a point of talking about the effect ds1's condition has on ds2's chidhood (I was pregnant with ds3 at the time).

glad your on your way to getting some help.

i personally would have told social services in writing that i didn't need to explain myself and they could kiss my hairy arse.

and i would indeed have posted leaflets through all my neighbours doors.

Thats terrible, i would have been so angry aaronsmum. I have 2 kids on the spectrum and they share a room and im always having to tell them, lie down as my older ds would jump on the beds. Id be really angry if one of my neighbours reported me for noise, cos my 2 sound like mini elephants up in their room when theyre jumping about etc. The walls arent really that thick and ive neighbours on both sides. Some people havent got a flaming clue what we go through every day and night trying to bring up children who have autism etc. If they want to think our kids are badly behaved or were bad parents it just shows how much they dont know. They need to go educate theirselves and stop giving us a hard time. Sorry for the rant.

aaronsmummy · 26/07/2006 07:32

2mum - my sentiments exactly
