Have you seen this

Have you ever seen anything quite so ridiculous? How many children and young people know about EHCPs? How many SENCOs do? Out governing body had never heard about it.

How misleading to ask for this from vulnerable youngsters without any objective guidance about what they are being asked to write on.

Another pot of government money?

They have blocked me from replying - again. Anyone want to retweet or reply to them?

But surely there will also be jam in these artistic depictions of EHCPs. Or perhaps, marmite???

IE, I'm sure that, if I were to shove my hand down the side of the sofa, I'd find both of those things, plus some hairy, peanut butter encrusted, lego :o

Ourvue - Grin Would probably have a more efefctive outcome than LA provision

I note "the winning entry will meet Edward Timpson, Minister for Children and Families, and get to ask him their question directly. You will be able to talk to the Minister and tell him how you feel about the reforms, what you think is good and what you would like to see changed. During their visit to Westminster the winner will also receive either a trip on the London Eye or a Thames River tour, and a visit to Parliament."

Is this a prize for the child or a photo op for the Minister?

ouryve · 02/08/2013 16:03

Haha. I'd love DS1 to tell him what he'd like to change.

School needs to be DEMOLISHED! And get rid of school dinners. School dinners are MUSH. And will you send my brother to a school especially for children just like HIM because he is DISTRACTING.

Then Mr T would attempt to put his hand on DS1's shoulder to gurn at the camera and DS1 would bolt.

And Mr T gurns very well

KOKOagainandagain · 02/08/2013 16:04

It is hard to imagine a less suitable 'prize' if heights, boats and crowded places freak you out.

KOKOagainandagain · 02/08/2013 16:08

Oh dear God! I can't imagine DS 1 meeting this man. I was worried but now I think bring it on Grin How can it fail?

inappropriatelyemployed · 02/08/2013 16:08

Aah, but it won't be one of those 'type' of children winning will it? Happy, smiley disabled children is what we want and what Mr T will get c/o CDC.

I wonder how much it is all costing?

What child are they aiming this at? Seriously what kid with SEN or disabilities cares jack shit about Timpson and his reforms?

OP posts:
Summerhasloaded · 02/08/2013 18:34

Good question! The same goes for the EHC plans - I've asked at many pathfinder meetings whose eyes the plan is for. What child with SEN or disabilities would really want to read their plan?

But no, the professionals know better. Cue sick-making cartoon figures, photos of the child and family, typefaces aimed at children, cutesy phrases to be completed "What's important to me", etc etc. if my ds is anything to go by, he would say Minecraft!

I've seen examples of EHC templates from most of the pathfinders, and many are in this format.

There is a lack of vision right at the top about the purpose of EHC plans. The child doesn't give a monkeys about the plan, parents/carers do.

inappropriatelyemployed · 02/08/2013 19:05

The child might if they thought their views with worth anything but these cutesy plans don't aim to give any weight to what the child really things.

Current statements have a section for the child's views. DS duly fills in his AR pupil friendly form every year. His views had radically altered this year but the LA couldn't see that it was worth putting them in the statement. So much for A12 Convention on Rights of the Child.

No one cares about a child's view of the provision they are getting so what does it matter to the child what the form looks like that sets out the crap provision?

In my experience, there may be little logic to what a child says is important to them, and may be based on entirely random things depending on when, how and who asked. Some children, like yours, are able to clearly say what they think, but many aren't.

The scary thing is the conversations I've heard round the table at pathfinder meetings. Eg using what the child has said to justify a placement, removing respite care as the child has said he prefers granny to do it, etc.

It makes me angry thinking about it Angry

inappropriatelyemployed · 02/08/2013 19:44

Yes I agree. DS has developed his ability to type his concerns out but with my support. He would never do it at school. You would get: do you like school? Yes. Blah blah blah.

A child's views need to be taken properly by someone they trust and who is skilled at getting their real views.

TOWIELA · 02/08/2013 19:55

My DC wrote his views. Well - if you can call it writing! He physically can't hold the pen properly so they are more like scratching on a page. And then because his dyslexia is so severe, he can't spell even the simplest of words. He's nearly 10 and still can't spell his own name. I expect his views weren't even looked at - probably thought to be the mother exaggerating and faking it! In fact his uncle who (although 50) has a mental age of 2 year old, writes better than he does - he does scratchings too but at least his vaguely looks like words!

The LA school really isn't going to know what hits them when he turns up there in September! I would like to say that's their problem. They shouldn't have said they could support him in a court of law (although they said to me privately they couldn't). But, of course, once my DC heads back to the anxiety of a year ago (when he was last in school), it will be my problem as the i'm the only person who really does have his best interests at heart.

ouryve · 02/08/2013 19:58

Just told DS1 he could enter a competition to get to meet Mr Timpson.

Who's that?

I said " cos you know everything about SEN reforms, don't you"

Everything

:o

His views dfor AR are at least submitted, no matter how off the wall they are.

fightingthecarrots · 02/08/2013 20:07

Ooh - looks great Hmm.
Ds is happy to design some kind of futuristic looking carrot design. He would have loads of questions such as - why was I not allowed to have a full time education like the other children at my school? why did school want my parents to apologise for my disability which caused distress to the staff? why did school not want me and kick me out?

fightingthecarrots · 02/08/2013 20:09

Ds is very blunt so would say it how it is Smile

fightingthecarrots · 02/08/2013 20:15

Mind you, they might be expecting difficult questions. Have you seen their suggestions:
What support will I get if I don?t have an Education, Health and Care Plan?
My local authority says it doesn?t have any money to pay for any support for me, what should I do?
How will you make sure all the people I?m working with talk to each other?

inappropriatelyemployed · 02/08/2013 20:18

Do you think the people who drafted this have ever met a child let alone with communication difficulties?

These are questions for adults. Why not let us put them?
