I'm going! Moondog you will have to wear a red carnation or something or how will I recognise you!

moondog · 14/03/2013 18:57

Hehe!
I shall seek you out. Grin

I would love to go but this is too short notice for me and I can't clear a space in my diary. Can I sign up somewhere to get notification of futire confereences?

bochead · 14/03/2013 19:18

I'm being REALLY thick I know, but how much does it cost?

I'd love to go but even the most creative politician couldn't make my current financial situation look anything but grotty.

moondog · 14/03/2013 19:33

You are, yes. Grin
£55 for three days of top stuff.
Look at the registration link.
Reemember, you don't have to sit through everything.
You get the programmes and look at what interests you. The rest of the time you network/gossip/sleep/people watch.

The people I referred to are worth £55 each alone.
Seriously, the cream of the British ABA scene will be there.

I'll point her out. She's the one with the ironed knickers sickof

moondog · 14/03/2013 19:44

Star, I will be very disappointed if I don't see you there for at least some of it.
You have to hear Janet Twyman speak.
She is fantastic!

I will wear my ironed knickers on my head for ease of identification.

You know what. DD is doing Headsprout and FLYING through it.

Just watching her I realise how difficult ds finds reading. I seriously doubt he'd be able to read at all any other way. I see things that he struggled with and she just doesn't. But the way the program catches all of the little potential errors means that he has had a chance.

Also, I have sorted ds' pencil grip in less than a week and in around 10 minutes of work altogether, using a clicker.

StarlightMcKenzie · 14/03/2013 19:59

I'm truly hoping to get there at least one day. It was a bit scary not knowing people at first but honestly, I was so welcomed.

If others want to go but are worried then I'm happy to arrange a meet-up there (if I can get there), though people are supposedly scared of meeting me, so that might not work................Hmm

bochead · 14/03/2013 20:10

I wanna go but will have to pay for it on Monday.

DS's reading and writing is now scaring me, although the BO & OT we've done has enabled him to dress himself and other things I'm getting a bit desperate - especially on the reading front. (NC level 2 via PIVATS scales in year 4). I wanna find out as much as I can on Headsprout and whether it can help kids with seriously fooked visual tracking and convergence issues. Being able to read would open up a whole new world to him and secondary is looming.

moondog · 14/03/2013 21:46

I'll come by for that meet up Star.
I can vouch for her.
She is luffly gentle softly spoken laydeeee.
If you can only make it for some of it, make Janet's talk a priority.
Did you do Carl & Mike's PT workshop last time.

Great to hear of clicker success!

Hello

I hope you don't mind me posting. I am interested in ABA. Would this conference be a good place to start? Or is it for people who know about it already.

We have tried Headsprout which my son found very, very dull indeed. Maybe we were the exception!

moondog · 14/03/2013 22:30

Of course not Jo. Smile
Most people there will know a fair bit about it but it would be a great place to lerarn more, find out about what is available and make some new contacts.
Sorry to hear about the Headsprout experience. I wonder why? We've used it with scores of kids, most of whom have really enjoyed it (as did my own).
It would be a good place to come to think about that. There'll be presentations on ongoing research projects using it.

You will be very welcome.

gosh not free on Tuesday, but would love to hear the one on how they treat selective eating ....though now I have the ladies names, I'll keep an eye out and see if they write anything....

thanks for the tip Moondog

DisAstrophe · 14/03/2013 23:19

Please can I hijack and ask if you can get headsprout software for an IPAD? Ds can only just about use touch screen due to his poor motor skills. I googled but the website talked about buying specialist computers and I got confused.

ds reliably recognises about 15 letter sounds and school is just starting with blending his first words like c-a-t. Does it sounds like he is ready for Headsprout? He is 7 so I blooming well hope so.

moondog · 15/03/2013 00:12

Dis I have recently looked into this in some detail although I in no way a techie soul. You need Flash Player I think (does that make sense?) and it was not viable for us. We have used it with several kids with poor motor skills (eg CP) and have managed with careful task breakdowns. If you come to EBAG we could talk more about this.

OP posts:
bochead · 15/03/2013 10:23

Talking of motor skills - is there anyone there who'd know of a good learning to type programme (as in interesting & good for building confidence). DS also has fine motor issues so can't write and I intend to spend the summer hols on touch typing as I think he could manage that, but ONLY if it's approached in the right way. (I'm not expecting him to ever achieve 45wpm). He'll plod away at something with real dilligence if he gets positive feedback on progress. I suppose I'm worried about putting him off by choosing a programme that develops too fast or is just plain boring.

HairyMaclary · 15/03/2013 11:30

I know there was a lot of talk on here a couple of years ago about precision teaching but we were not ready for it at the time. With the major op out of the way and things improving fast I'm really interested in this whole approach. Can anyone, Moondog, star... point me in the right direction to some good resources for this?

DS has cerebral palsy, just turned 8, top 'sets' in all school work and loves to learn but has significant gaps, handwriting, typing, emotional literacy and a few others, and I think both he and I are now ready to tackle some of these.

Am tempted by the conference but as I know nothing about anything (in spite of being a teacher and covering supply in an Asd base on occasion!) I think I'll be out of my depth.

Thanks!

MerryCouthyMows · 15/03/2013 11:45

It's a shame I can never get childcare. Sad

I would live to be able to go to this, but DS3 is unable to be left with anyone. And it's him it would help the most!

Ah, well, when he's older...

DisAstrophe · 15/03/2013 13:53

Moondog. Thank you for your reply. I can't go that weekend as on holiday in rainy sunny devon then.

So with flash software it could be possible on an ipad. Now I know it is possible I'll email mimio for help. And I have to buy an Ipad...

I saw there is an app for mimio reader for more advanced readers in the itunes store if anyone is at that stage.

moondog · 15/03/2013 16:08

Dis, yes email them. They are incredibly helpful.
Hairy YOU MUST SIGN UP for the Precision Teaching workshop!
This is a golden opportunity.
You will be fine.
It is the sort of stuff we teach scores of school asssitants day in and day out. I'll be there, hanigng out like the old groupie that I am.
