The school has a mania for dressing up at every opportunity. DS hates change, especially to clothes.

So I give you:
Harry Potter Grin
school uniform plus biro scar, glasses and a stick
With recycled star wars obsession darth vader cloak

First ever book day/ own clothes day / house colours day/ Easter bonnet day/ Olympic kit day/ sports day / etc

without meltdown from DS (and usually me too Blush)

Well done to your DS!
Dd's school is the same when it comes to dressing up!

Dd has gone in a Hello Kitty tshirt and jeans! I spoke with her teacher yesterday to check it was ok and her lovely teacher said that she should wear whatever makes her comfortable! She does own a Hello Kitty book so it's almost the same!
I think they learnt their lesson (and so did I!) when she wore her Welsh costume for st David's day last week and I anticipated a problem and sent spare clothes in her bag. She lasted til toast time!

That post has a lot of ! Blush sorry

I have another good suggestion. Go as characters (or just generic faction members) from veronika roth's divergent. It's a YA novel but still a book.

There are 5 factions, all of which have dress codes you can probably accommodate from your child's existing wardrobe.

Abnegation (the faction that values selflessness): non-description, baggy, grey clothes.
Amity (the faction that loves peace): red and yellow clothes.
Candor (values truth): black trousers/skirt and white shirt
Dauntless (values bravery): black clothing.
Erudite (values intellect): blue clothing.

DS1 (who is generally happy dressing up, but didn't want to look like a freak if no one else bothered) went as an erudite. Blue chinos (you could wear jeans), blue tshirt and blue jumper.

No face paint required.

ArbitraryUsername · 07/03/2013 09:28

I suspect that divergent factions is a good option for all dressing up requirements. And both Candor (who see the truth as black and white, and hate lying) and erudite (who value knowledge above all else) share virtues with many children with ASD.

Another one for those that don't like dressing up is "Where's Wally"
Let them dress in their own clothes, with a top etc that has a pattern/picture etc on it. Photocopy a tiny picture of Wally and hide it in the print.

Warning - winge post

I need to find my usual va va vooom again fast, but Monday's suprise has knocked me into a very dark place. I just can't find myself able to care about anything right now.

I did kids entertaiment at one point to pay the mortgage, yet cba this year to do anything at all for book day. DS was really keen, so that's a missed opportunity. Normally I love an excuse to get the craft stuff out.

I'm smiling and being upbeat for DS at 2am, when he wets the bed, but that's all I can manage right now. He has a school trip next week and I really, really don't want to take him. A whole day with a TA who is too rude to say "hello" sounds delightful.

DS3 dressed up as Harry Potter too, courtesy of a recycled HP costume from 2008 when DS1 had to dress up at his old primary school for World Book Day. Personally I loathe these things.

All we had knocking about in DS3's wardrobe was army fatigues. Didn't really think that his school would approve if him saying that his favourite book was Bravo Two Zero!!! Grin so recycling an old HP costume and pinching his sister's school shirt and spare tie plus pullover did the trick!

I salute your genius Mayeera!

I missed this thread in my haste to post my rant about WBD - see "my day with dd2 so far" for a fuller account of dd2 and dressing up...

have already eaten half my bodyweight in HAribo as a recovery method Grin

is it too early for Wine?

ArbitraryUsername · 07/03/2013 10:47

I do like how she broke it to you that Gerald is, in fact, not real. It's a good job that bit didn't happen earlier in the morning or you may be well past the point that can be helped by wine by now.

silverfrog · 07/03/2013 10:55

oh, the 'real-ness' of Gerald is a hot, contentious issue, let me tell you.

She also took her favourite teddy into school - it's a giraffe. He's real, of course (when she wants him to be) - he even has bloody clothes because he gets cold (wtf?!)

but apparently her giraffe didn't want to be Gerald's friend, because he is her friend. no mention of gerald not being real then, was there?

you may be right about the wine - it's defintiely more a gin situation.

I have a little girl currently dressed up as Hulk she loves Hulk so this stops arguments.

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 07/03/2013 12:07

DS had to dress up one year but also had to take the book in that inspired their costume lol
DS doesn't like dress up days so he went in his normal uniform and took in the transition book they had made for his transfer a few months earlier :)
Blooming smart arse I am :)

Catsdontcare · 07/03/2013 12:12

Fortunately DS loves dressing up but today it was nt ds1's turn to leave the house in tears as he felt his muscles weren't big enough in his Spider-Man costume (swear to god they have a meeting in the middle of the night and ds2 will say "no plans to flip out tomorrow so there's a slot available if you want it ds1")

MareeyaDolores · 07/03/2013 19:12

Cats Grin

Silverfrog, haribos are the way forward.... despite the 'good day' I did have to take 5min to breathe, post and finish a family pack of jelly babies by myself (in the car at 08:59 Blush). Making note to self for the dd hello kitty and ds2 link book ideas for next year, thank goodness I only had one dressing up today!

That book with divergent etc sounds great
Boch Sad this week sounds dire.

DS2 was thrilled to be heading off to nursery as Captain Hook but totally knocked by the sight of all the other children dressed up when he walked in. I had tried to prepare him and DD2 was dressed as Tinkerbell, but I had to peel him off my leg and tell the teacher he seemed nervous because everyone looked different. Even the things you think should be fun can turn into a chore!

MareeyaDolores · 07/03/2013 22:51

Ah well. finally asleep. Actually, this evening was fairly dire, think it might've been easier to get the not-coping out of the way before school!
