The school has a mania for dressing up at every opportunity. DS hates change, especially to clothes.

So I give you:
Harry Potter Grin
school uniform plus biro scar, glasses and a stick
With recycled star wars obsession darth vader cloak

First ever book day/ own clothes day / house colours day/ Easter bonnet day/ Olympic kit day/ sports day / etc

without meltdown from DS (and usually me too Blush)

Denim shirt and jeans. Works as generic pirate/cowboy.

I Hate World Book Day. And any dressing up day. Our school did the dressing up today, they tend to save it for a Friday if they can. I handled it very wrong this time. We talked about it, ds (ASD) really didn't want to dress up, it sends him completely off the rails, and school made clear it was optional anyway. I knew it would be a really bad idea to send dd (NT) in dressed up and ds not, so didn't make a big thing of it and they just went in in uniform. But it looked like every other child was dressed up ... Cue huge meltdowns from BOTH of them and having to park in the school car park (technically not allowed) and carry them in one at a time.

Sad Sad

I don't actually know if this is what triggered his meltdown before we even got in the car, but I suspect it probably was. Dp will be furious too and say it was my fault for not getting them dressed up. But ds really really didn't want to dress up. But then he feels he is singled out and different ....

He has been doing so well too, had a fab parents' evening yesterday. I am trying not to weep at my desk here. I am glad we are not alone.

You have my sympathy. It's really hard to know what to do for the best sometimes. Ds has been bouncing off the walls since we got home & I'm sure it's to do with today being a dress up day. All his teachers were dressed up too which adds to the randomness of it all for him. You can't always anticipate how they'll react.

Sometimes there is no good way to handle a situation. Whatever you do, something goes wrong.

MareeyaDolores · 08/03/2013 21:11

Right. New, radical, simple idea which can become a nationally accepted good practice point for all spectrummy dc

School to have a suitable costume ready for them (and a spare uniform)
So however they go in, it can be dealt with, by those responsible for the trouble in the first place.

'reasonable adjustments'. Hopefully.

Arbitrary yes that's what my colleague said - whatever I had done it would have been wrong. Next dress-up day we'll probably try the alternative option of dd dressing up and ds not, and see how that goes. Wonder if they'll do something for Red Nose Day ..

School are lovely though, they found a costume for dd and she was perfectly happy with it, and reassured me several in ds' class didn't dress up either, no judging. I am really starting to feel like they understand the situation - it's taken a couple of years but we are getting there.

Red Nose Day, DS4's special school are wearing colours that clash. DS couldn't care less what he wore, he just wants to go to school! I think I'll decide on the day.

signandsmile · 09/03/2013 20:53

just got thru book day, and guess what... red nose day next week, and I am away that day, so ds (with his 'issues') will be dressed by dh, who's hands are not up to anything fiddly argh!!!

As they have to be superheroes have decided will laminate a badge to say

"Safety Permit

GAMMA RADIATION PROJECT

Name: BRUCE BANNER" then he can wear his own clothes, and tell them not to make him angry LOL Grin Grin
